Advanced and Untested Applications ---------------------------------- This directory contains advanced Internet applications such as servers that an ordinary user probably doesn't need, and more general programs that have been found or uploaded that I haven't tested yet. You will have to rely on your own wits and the documentation included with each program to configure these. comd.zip is a TSR to permit a PC to be used as a server for serial port devices. This is a WATTCP application, with source. dis_pkt9.zip is a shim to provide a packet driver interface over an NDIS link. getnws12.zip is a command-line news retriever (similar to Htget, but for news). It is a WATTCP application. I haven't tested it yet. gophserv.zip is a gopher server. It is a WATTCP application. There is no documentation, but source is included. You will probably need to spend some time perusing the gopher docs at U. Minn. to get this to work. msoftc.zip is the Microsoft C version of the Waterloo TCP/IP development package. Use the -d option with Pkunzip to unzip with directories. There are also versions available for Borland C, Watcom C, and Gnu C (Djgpp), but this version is harder to find than those, so I'm putting it up for convenience. (Source code - not a program.) msvibm.zip is MS-Kermit v3.14 (June 22, 1995 release). Use the -d option with Pkunzip to extract with directories. Kermit is a highly configurable communications program. In the context of DOS Internet, it can be used as a scripted or terminal-mode dialer for your packet driver, or as a telnet client. For telnet, Kermit actually uses the WATTCP stack, but it is configured differently. I used Kermit in college and remember it being the very devil to set up, so I haven't tested this version yet (I don't think I'm any smarter than I was then ;-). nfs102-w.zip is Tsoft's NFS client for DOS. Works on 8086, but requires DOS 3.3 or later. This enables you to map directories on an NFS server as drives on your machine. You can run one other packet driver app in addition to this. This is time-limited shareware, but you can still register it (go to www.tsoft.net). This is the WATTCP version; there is also a Trumpet TCP version out there. nutil02.zip contains some utilities to use with Tsoft's NFS client. pdtst314.zip contains programs to set the time on your local PC using a time server on the Internet, or to test the network (ping, traceroute). It seems to use its own proprietary stack. Marc Williams says this works, but I haven't been able to get it to. pktmux12.exe (a self-extracting archive) contains PKTMUX and PKTDRV, for running more than one packet driver application simultaneously, for example under a multitasker like DesqView. Also included is WINPKT, for running packet driver applications in a DOS box under Windows 3.1 (or 3.11) 386 enhanced mode. (The comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc FAQ, in tcpdocs.zip in the main internet directory, discusses the use of these programs.) pprd200.zip is a line printer daemon (lpd) for DOS. It enables you to print on your local printer over the Internet. Source is included. This is a WATTCP application. qvttcp21.zip is a DEC VT220 emulator (telnet client?). It is an NCSA application (CONFIG.TEL is renamed QVT_TCP.RC here). Also included are DIS_PKT and ODIPKT, shims to provide a packet driver interface over an NDIS or ODI link, respectively. (The comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc FAQ discusses DIS_PKT and ODIPKT). rmtd091.zip is a remote tape protocol daemon (rmtd) for DOS. Basically, it enables a Unix box to treat a DOS machine's hard drive or floppy drive as a tape drive. Includes source. This is a WATTCP application. smbpd094.zip is an SMB printer daemon for DOS. The docs say that this can permit an XT to be used as a dedicated print server on a Unix or Windows for Workgroups network. tcpspy10.zip is a packet scanner for Ethernet (i.e., not for SLIP or PPP). It can display all the packets travelling between a host on your Ethernet and a remote host. Of course, you have a legitimate reason to do this, other than finding out everybody's password ;-). telnetd.zip is a telnet daemon (telnetd) for DOS. It enables you to "log into" your PC from a remote site and execute DOS commands. This is a WATTCP application. tjpabi.zip is Jeff Patterson's Pascal glue code for Trumpet TCP. For writing Trumpet TCP applications with Turbo Pascal v7.0 or later. (Source code - not a program.) www0005.zip is a WWW server for DOS, compiled for 8086. It is a Trumpet TCP application. xfs191.zip is an NFS client. This enables you to map directories on a Unix box as drives on your DOS machine. This package appears to use its own custom TCP/IP stack. It is supposed to require a 286.
