I am a PCBoard sysop that uses the true file date for the DIR files, not the upload date. I also do a lot of file downloading for my system and pre-prepare the files offline before bringing them to my BBS system. This preparation includes setting up the descriptions. When I add the files to the BBS, I add the prepared descriptions to the DIR lists with my own editor. (It is a long story, I can't use the SaltAir DIR editor because of my DIR list formats). To keep the "new file search" users happy, I also add the new file descriptions to my "upload" DIR list. Soooo, I carry to the system 2 DIR lists: one with the true file date and one with the upload date. I use COPYDATE to create the second DIR list by copying the first and plugging the wanted upload date. This program and COPYDESC and WGM-MAKE and my KEDIT macros are the tools I use for all this offline DIR list manipulation. Maybe this will be helpful to you. It sure saves time for me!
