Gateway 2000 DOS Application Configuration Files for Use with Windows 95 Disclaimer ========== Although testing has been performed using these files, they are provided "as is " and Gateway 2000 assumes no responsibility regarding their usage. Using the Files On This Diskette ================================ The files found on this diskette (CD if you are viewing this from the GW2k System Software CD) have been provided to simplify the process when configuring DOS applications and games to run under Windows 95. Installation ============ To properly install the REGISTRY files, follow these steps: 1. Start Windows 95. 2. Open Explorer and locate the folder where you placed the REG files(or "double-click"on the CD-ROM icon if using CD. Path: \WIN95DRV\REGFILES). 3. Find the REG files that are appropriate for your system from the list below and "double-click" on the file: REG Filename Component ------------ --------- mitsumi.reg Use with Mitsumi 4x IDE CDROM Drive wearnes.reg Use with Wearnes IDE CDROM Drives (includes 2x,4x & 6x & 8x) sanyo.reg Use with Sanyo 6x IDE CDROM Drive toshiba.reg Use with Toshiba SCSI CDROM Drive toshiba1.reg Use with Toshiba IDE CDROM Drive pnp.reg Use with ISA PnP Sound cards aspidrv.reg Use ONLY with Toshiba SCSI CDROM or when using multiple SCSI devices. mouse.reg Use to load DOS Mouse driver on desktop systems smouse.reg Use to load DOS Mouse driver on Solo Notebook solocd.reg Use with ALL Solo CDROM Drives 4. Click "OK" on the dialog box that appears confirming entry into the system registry. Using the entries ================= Once you have chosen the files needed for your configuration, you can now use them to configure your DOS applications. 1. If you have created a shortcut on your Windows 95 desktop, right click on its icon. 2. If you have not created a shortcut on your Windows 95 desktop, open Explorer, find the executable file and right click on its icon. 3. Choose the "Properties" option from the menu. 4. Choose the "Program" tab and then the "Advanced" button. 5. Make sure "MS-DOS mode is checked and switch to "Specify a new MS-DOS Configuration". 6. Say "OK" to any messages you receive and then click on the "Configuration" button. 7. Again say "OK" to any messages you receive. You will see options to select from. Check the boxes you need for your application. 8. Click on "OK" until all windows are closed. Your application is now ready to run in MS-DOS mode with full capabilities. Limitations of the Files ======================== The device lines used in the registry entry files assume that the device drivers have been installed in a specific location. If the lines fail to load when using the shortcuts created using these entries either, rename the directories so that they match the listings in the files or, modify the PIFs to reflect the location of the files in your particular configuration. 1. CD-ROM drivers are assumed to be located in the \CDROM directory. 2. Mouse driver is assumed to be located in the \MSINPUT\MOUSE directory. 3. The ASPI driver for the Toshiba SCSI CD-ROM is assumed to be located in the \SCSI drirectory. 4. The ICU DOS/Windows Configuration Manager(DWCFGMG.SYS) is assumed to be loaded in the \PLUGPLAY\DRIVERS\DOS directory. 5. MSCDEX.EXE is assumed to be loaded in the \WINDOWS\COMMAND directory. 6. The SOLO notebook mouse driver is assumed to be located in the \GPOINT directory. 7. The SOLO notebook CD-ROM driver is assumed to be located in the \CDROM directory. If you choose to rename the directories, simply open the Windows Explorer applet and "right click" on the directory you want to change and choose "Rename" from the menu. Then just type in the new name for the directory. Using the PIF files =================== Besides the included registry entry files, various PIFs (Program Information Files) are also included on this diskette (or CD) to make it easier for you to create shortcuts to the DOS applications and games that will only run in MS-DOS Mode. These files contain common settings for the sound card, CD-ROM and memory configurations that most of these applications need. Instead of copying all of them to your hard drive and therefore taking up unnecessary space, the following table will help you determine which one works with the hardware installed in your Gateway system. Please refer to your invoice, if necessary, to determine which hardware you have installed. Keep in mind that these files are listed using their Windows 95 filenames so they may be truncated if viewing from DOS. The sound cards listed are for the Plug and Play versions of the hardware. Win 95 Filename Hardware Configuration --------------- ---------------------- Exit to DOS(1) Wearnes CD-ROM drives & SB Vibra 16 (includes 4x,6x & 8x models) Exit to DOS(2) Mitsumi CD-ROM drives & SB Vibra 16 Exit to DOS(3) Sanyo 6x CD-ROM drives & SB Vibra 16 Exit to DOS(4) Toshiba SCSI CD-ROM drives & SB Vibra 16 Exit to DOS(5) Wearnes CD-ROM drives & Ensoniq VIVO (includes 4x,6x & 8x models) Exit to DOS(6) Mitsumi CD-ROM drives & Ensoniq VIVO Exit to DOS(7) Sanyo 6x CD-ROM drives & Ensoniq VIVO Exit to DOS(8) Toshiba SCSI CD-ROM drives & Ensoniq VIVO Exit to DOS(9) Toshiba IDE CD-ROM drives & SB Vibra 16 Exit to DOS(10) Toshiba IDE CD-ROM drives & Ensoniq VIVO To install one of these files to your local drive, just highlight the file you want to use and "drag & drop" it onto the desktop. A Note on the DOS/Windows Configuration Manager (DWCFGMG.SYS) ============================================================= The DWCFGMG.SYS file is only needed when using certain revisions of the Ensoniq PnP sound card. This file is necessary for ALL revisions of the Sound Blaster Vibra16 PnP sound card EXCEPT Gateway part number SNDCRD005ACWW. PnP Sound Cards that DO need the driver --------------------------------------- SNDCRD005AAWW SNDCRD005ABWW SNDCRD006AAWW* PnP Sound Cards that DO NOT Need the Driver ------------------------------------------- SNDCRD005ACWW SNDCRD006ABWW SNDCRD006ACWW SNDCRD006ADWW *DWCFGMG.SYS does NOT need to be used IF the driver revision used with this card is Gateway part number SNDCRD008ACWW. This driver revision can be found on the Gateway 2000 BBS and Website or by contacting Customer Support at 1-800-846-2301. IMPORTANT: You may need this file under other circumstances such as having a PnP modem installed and you plan on using it to play some DOS games via modem (Check your documentation to be sure.). Special Note on Sound Cards =================================== Ensoniq Soundscape Sound Cards ------------------------------ The Ensoniq PnP sound cards installed in Gateway 2000 systems come with "Windows 95 Application" diskettes. These applications need to be installed before using the sound card in MS-DOS mode. This is because the install program for the applications add linesto the Windows 95 registry that are necessary for the proper operation of the card in DOS mode. These applications are easily installed, if they are not already, by usingCONTROL PANEL and the "Add/Remove Programs" applet. Also, it is recommended that customers use the driver revision listed under Gateway part number SNDDSX008ACWW for ALL Ensoniq sound card revisons listed below: SNDCRD002AAWW SNDCRD002ABWW SNDCRD006AAWW SNDCRD006ABWW SNDCRD006ACWW This driver revision can be found on the Gateway 2000 BBS and Website or by contacting Customer Support at 1-800-846-2301. Sound Blaster Vibra 16 ---------------------- The SB Vibra sound card shipped with Gateway 2000 computers come with DOS system drivers that are not needed under Windows 95. They aren't incompatible but some of them do stay memory resident and will decrease the amount of conventional memory available for use by the DOS application. It is recommended that these lines be removed from the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files used by the system when booting to DOS mode. There have been no problems reported by not having these TSR's loaded. All other models of Gateway 2000 Sound Cards -------------------------------------------- These files have NOT been tested with the any other sound cards shipped by Gateway 2000 in the past. However, with some adjustments, the files written for the Vibra card should function with the Gateway sound cards. Windows 95 Help File ==================== The Windows 95 based help file (DMCFG.HLP)can be copied to any convenient location on your local drive. The suggested location for all Windows help files is in the \WINDOWS\HELP directory.
