16 Mar 1995 - Preliminary Information
GIF files are bitmaps. The easiest way to generate a GIF file is to display some image on the screen and capture it. This can be done with the IBM package PMCamera/2 available in ftp://software.watson.ibm.com/pub/os2/ews. Any other OS/2 screen capture program will work, but PMCAM is free. PMCAM will not generate a GIF file directly. It can produce a BMP file (which will be useful if SpHyDir feature to produce an IPF document is also going to be used). PMCAM will also put the captured window or partial screen image in the Clipboard, where another utility like GBMV2 can convert it to GIF.
An IBMer produced the Generalized Bitmap (GBM) package. It is freely available from ftp://ftp-os2.nmsu.edu/os2/32bit/graphics as gbm.zip. Source is also provided for those who are interested. GBM is a nice basic package to convert bitmap files among many widely used formats. GBMV2 is the PM frontend to the GBM utility. It can "Paste" the window or partial screen image captured by PMCamera/2 and then write the image out in GIF format. Other "command line" GBM programs convert, resize, or display information about a variety of bitmap file formats. GBM can be used to convert between XBM, GIF, and BMP file formats.
HTML files can be spell checked if you have access to the LEXAM files. They do not appear to be fully public, but have been distributed at least as part of LAMAIL in the TCP/IP for OS/2 Base Kit. You need the LEXAM.DLL module and a spelling dictionary file.
A simple HTTP server based on Rexx files is available from IBM EWS as the GOSERVE package. More information is available by using Web Explorer against http://index.almaden.ibm.com. One area of consideration is to connect SpHyDir to the Rexx interface of this program to provide a shorter path for previewing the results of an edit.
