Managing Links

Most HTML editors expect the user to type in the document referenced (the URL) in order to create a hypertext link. Since it is easy to make a mistake, authors are urged to test their documents thoroughly. SpHyDir provides a simpler and more reliable method of constructing links.

Links to other files in the same library can be constructed using standard Workplace Shell behavior. Hold down Cntrl and Shift and drag the icon of another file in the library to a paragraph, point, or image object in the SpHyDir Workarea. If the link is made to a text object, the Hotword Selection window opens to select the particular phrase in the paragraph or point that will be used to form the link.

Links to remote documents should be managed with the aid of a Web Browser. In particular, in the OS/2 Warp environment in which SpHyDir operates the IBM Web Explorer program is an obvious choice. SpHyDir can extract the URL for frequenly used Web documents from the Web Explorer Hotlist, or an XSpO (external Rexx Program) can be used to extract from the active Web Explorer window the URL of the document currently being displayed. SpHyDir eliminates the opportunity for typing errors when entering the URL.

SpHyDir has a separate Link Manager Window that can be displayed by choosing it from the Window pulldown menu on the main SpHyDir workarea.

There is a button at the bottom of the window with the icon of the IBM Web Explorer. Click on this button and the list box fills with the current Quicklist from Web Explorer.

The top of the Link Manager window lists hyperlinks out of the currently selected document element in the main workarea window. In the workarea, hotwords are delimited by two special triangle characters. The Link Manager window shows the URL or file name of the links in the order that the hotwords appear in the paragraph or point. To delete a hotword link, select the URL in the Link Manager window list and press Ctrl-D. This will remove the triangle characters from the hotwords in the text. It is an error to delete the triangle characters in the text, because SpHyDir uses them to correlate hotwords to URLs.
