For instructions on doing this, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's Guide. Backup VENTURA 3.X and VENTURA 4.X Documents Files created using VENTURA 3.X and VENTURA 4.X and saved using Corel VENTURA 5 will no longer be usable with VENTURA 3.X and VENTURA 4.X. Corel recommends that you backup these files prior to using them in Corel VENTURA 5. CD-ROM: Opening Sample Publication and Chapter Files Sample publication and chapter files from VENTURA\TYPESET and VENTURA\VPSTYLE directories cannot be used directly from the CD- ROM. The sample files must be installed to the hard disk by using the Custom installation from SETUP.EXE. Deselect other components and select VENTURA. Click on the CUSTOMIZE button, and select Samples from the Corel VENTURA Options dialog box. Importing .CDR Files CDR files saved without Corel Presentation Exchange Data (CorelDRAW!3, CorelDRAW!4, CorelDRAW! 5 files saved without cmx) will not load into Corel VENTURA Unless CorelDRAW 5 is installed on the system. To get around this, either load the .CDR file into CorelDRAW! 5 and resave it with Corel Presentation Exchange Data, or open the .CDR file in the version of CorelDraw you have installed and export it in an importable format (Windows Metafile .WMF for example) or use cut and paste to OLE the file into CorelVENTURA. Older File Formats Several older word processing file formats are no longer supported by Corel VENTURA 5.0. These file formats are: - Multimate - DCA If your document contains a word processing file that is no longer supported, then perform the following steps to convert the file to a supported format: - Open the document in the previous version of VENTURA, Select Frame - File/Type Rename. - Change the document type to a supported file format. - Save the Chapter. Other graphics file formats not supported by Corel VENTURA 5.0 will need to be converted to a graphics file format used by Corel VENTURA 5.0. These unsupported file formats are: - MacPaint - DCS Importing Graphics and Panose Font Matching Panose Font matching is not invoked when importing graphics into Corel VENTURA. Windows Metafiles Support Windows Metafiles that contain bitmaps that are Run Length Encoded (RLE) may not display properly in Corel VENTURA. Ruling Lines Ruling Lines are not supported for rotated frames. Rotated Dotted lines Rotated Dotted lines do not display properly, but print correctly to Postscript Printers. Rotated dotted lines are not supported for non Postscript printers. Color in Previous Versions of Corel VENTURA Corel VENTURE 5.0 supports PANTONE Spot Colors, TRUMATCH Process Colors and FOCOLTONE Process Colors. Spot colors that were defined in style sheets in previous versions of VENTURA will be loaded as PANTONE Spot Colors. To change these colors, you need to make your selections on the appropriate dialog box. For example, to change the color of text, use Selected Text... item from the Format Menu. Modified Filter Support In Corel VENTURA 5.0, changes have been made to the support for filters to provide a literal interpretation. This has implications for older VENTURA files because codes inserted into the text, which were not interpreted by previous versions of VENTURA, will now be translated. If you experience problems of this nature, you should re-examine the codes in your word- processor file. For example: - If a number of paragraphs had been underlined in a word- processor- generated text file, older versions of VENTURA would only have displayed the underlining in the first paragraph. Corel VENTURA 5.0 will display all underlined characters. When importing text files that were used in previous versions of VENTURA Publisher, the extended symbol characters need to be translated to version Corel VENTURA 5.0 compatible codes. Opening a previous version chapter containing these files in Corel VENTURA 5.0 performs this translation, whereas importing the text file into Corel VENTURA 5.0 may not. Since no markings exist in a text file to indicate what version of VENTURA may have altered the file this problem is impossible to resolve. VENTURA Graphic Format (VGF) files VGF files are low-resolution copies of original graphic files created to speed up screen redrawing and opening of publications. These files, which are identified by an underscore in the file name extension (e.g., LOGO.EPS becomes LOGO.EP_), are turned off by default. To enable the display of VGF files, turn on the Keep VGF Files option in the Preferences, General dialog box and set Graphics Resolution to Low in the View menu. For more information about VGF files, search for VGF in the on- line Help. Database Publisher Configuration Settings If you are using the Paradox file format, ensure that you run the Paradox Engine Configuration Utility. Otherwise, the Paradox files will not load correctly. If exporting to word-processing file formats (such as Word, Ami Pro, etc) ensure that the settings are in the CORELDBP.INI. [dtp] vpwinpath=C:\COREL50\PROGRAMS winwordpath= pmpath= pm4path= [dbaccess] qepath= l123path= pxsortorder=a Database Publisher - Sample Recipes Files Database Publisher Recipes and Database Convert Recipes both have a default extension of RCP. These recipes are not interchangeable between the two applications. The following files should be copied from the DBPUB\PROJ\DATA directory to the DBPUB\PROJ\DOCS directly to be correctly accessed by the sample recipes. VENTLOG1.CM XDAWN.PC XCHT.PC XJOHN1.PC XAuto-panning and Interruptible Display Corel VENTURA automatically scrolls your view of the base page when you drag a free frame or graphic object beyond the edges of the document area. Auto-panning occurs only when less than the entire base page is visible. With Interruptible Display, the screen stops refreshing when you click the mouse or press the ESC key. If either of these actions occurs while a bitmap or a linked or embedded graphic is in the process of redrawing, refreshing stops when the graphic finishes redrawing. So if a page contains three graphics for example, and you press ESC (or click the mouse) while the first one is redrawing, that one will finish redrawing but the others will not redraw. In the case of vector graphics, refreshing stops immediately; the program does not wait for them to redraw completely. This lets you select a menu command or tool without waiting for the screen to redraw completely. Redrawing resumes when you choose the Refresh Window command in the View menu or press Ctrl+W. Installing a foreign-language dictionary If you have the CD-ROM version of Corel VENTURA, you can install multiple dictionaries to hyphenate and check the spelling of words in other languages. To install a foreign- language dictionary: 1. Copy the files from the SPELDICT directory on the CD-ROM Disk 1 to the COREL50\CUSTOM directory on your hard disk. (The English ienc9231.dat, hendp148.dat are in \CUSTOM dir) The choices are: Language SpellDict HyphenateDict Danish idnf9341.dat hdndy232.dat Dutch iduf9320.dat hduds321.dat English ienc9231.dat hendp148.dat Finnish ifnf9310.dat hfndy141.dat French ifrf9221.dat hfrds221.dat German igrf9310.dat hgrds311.dat Italian iitf9260.dat hitds262.dat Norwegian inof9320.dat hnody321.dat Portuguese ipof9124.dat hpody141.dat Spanish ispf9332.dat hsprs311.dat Swedish iswf9310.dat hswds311.dat Finnish ifnx9300.dat (this is a morphological dictionary) Note: If you want to have both hyphenation and spell checking occur in the chosen language, both files (SpellDict and HyphenateDict) must be copied to COREL50\CUSTOM. 2. Create a paragraph tag using the Paragraph Settings dialog boxes. The dictionary is selected in the Typography page. Note: The selected dictionary is assigned to the paragraph tag and spell checking and hypenation automatically occurs in the selected language. Installing a foreign-language thesaurus Only one thesaurus may be used at one time. 1. Copy the files from the SPELDICT directory on the CD-ROM disk #1 to the COREL50\CUSTOM directory on your hard disk. The choices are: Language ThesaurusDict Danish rdntf300.dat Dutch rdutf300.dat English renti301.dat British rbrti311.dat Finnish rfntf211.dat French rfrtf222.dat German rgrtf300.dat Italian rittf210.dat Norwegian rnotf313.dat Portuguese rpotf321.dat Spanish rsptf302.dat Swedish rswtf300.dat 2. Backup the file CORELAPP.INI in the COREL50\CONFIG directory to CORELAPP.BAK. 3. Using Windows Notepad or other ASCII text editor, open the CORELAPP.INI file in your COREL50\CONFIG directory. 4. Locate the line "ThesaurusDict=" and type the file name of the language you want to use for the thesaurus (e.g., rdntf300.dat for a Danish thesaurus). Note the first occurance of ThesaurusDict= starts with a semicolon - this is not the line to edited - find the next occurace of the line. Note: The Thesaurus you install doesn't have to correspond to the language of the SpellDict or HyphenateDict. However, the language of the SpellDict and HypenateDict files must be the same. Hyphenation Previous versions of Corel VENTURA did not save hyphenation module information in the chapter or style sheets (it depended on the files located in the VENTURA directory). Since Corel VENTURA 5.0 now saves hyphenation module information, you need to set the Default Hyphenation on the General tab of the Preferences dialog box. This will set the default hyphenation when loading older chapters. Changes to the default hyphenation are set within Paragraph Tags. Line Endings As mentioned previously, Corel VENTURA 5.0 supports multiple Houghton Mifflin hyphenation dictionaries. Therefore, some of the line endings in your document will be adjusted. Custom Page Sizes Unlike earlier versions of VENTURA where custom page sizes were set manually in the base frame Sizing and Scaling dialog box, Corel VENTURA 5.0 supports custom page sizes and can automatically create custom page sizes for chapters saved in earlier versions. When you open a chapter from an earlier version of VENTURA with a custom frame setting for the base page, a dialog box will appear prompting you either to create a custom page size based on the base frame or retain your original settings.click "Yes" and Corel VENTURA automatically creates a custom page size based on the base frame size, or click "No" to retain the original settings. Users should save the style sheet under a new name to prevent other version 4.x chapters using the style sheet from being affected. Preferences Disabling the "Prompt to Save Chapters" setting in the general preferences section disables all occurrences of prompts to save chapters. Even when a user answers "No" to a prompt to save publication, the changes to chapters will have already been saved. Numbering "Continue from previous chapter" for the first chapter should be turned off. This is the default setting for the first chapter in a publication and it should not be turned on. Tag Limitations Tag names that begin with Z_ are considered to be generated internally by Corel VENTURA and therefore cannot be removed from the style sheet. Manually created Z_tags such as Z_index etc, may cause problems with Acrobat generation with a postscript driver. Problems also arise when generating an index with user- created Z_tags. Headers/Footers When using the first or last tag match setting in a header or footer, the "Tags roll-up" should be closed before entering the Header/Footer dialog (Layout, Chapter Setting). If the roll-up is open before entering the dialog, it will not be accessible from the menu and tag names will need to be entered manually. If there is a marker/cross reference/index entry in the text that is tagged for the first/last match ofheader/footerthe marker is copied to the header/footer, and cannot be removed. This may affect cross references and index entries. Landscaped Custom Pages Landscaped Custom pages will not retain custom column widths. Change the page orientation to portrait (even if the width value exceeds the length value) and the settings will be retained. Reverse Text Previous versions of Corel VENTURA automatically set text to white if used in solid black box text or frames. These tags need to be changed from black to white text. When opening these chapters in Corel VENTURA 5.0, the black frame/box text will appear with no text. Select the tag or select the text and set it to white. VENTURA Template Terminology User's of Corel VENTURA 4.2 may be familiar with the term Design Gallery. The term Design Gallery has been replaced with the term Publication Templates. VENTURA File Import Auto-Sensing When loading (importing) graphics and text files, selecting a file without specifying the specific import filter will invoke the auto-sensing feature. Since many graphics and text files appear similar, the auto- sensing feature may not accurately recognize the file format. To ensure correct loading of graphics and text files, Corel recommends that you always identify the specific filter after selecting a filename from the file list. EPS Files Corel VENTURA 5.0 supports the importing of Placeable Encapsulated Postscript files from previous versions of VENTURA Publisher, as well as from other applications. Corel VENTURA 5.0 will not support EPS files that have been printed from Corel VENTURA 5.0 through a postscript printer driver (Users may have used this method, rather than a screen grab, to place an image of a page in documents. In this case, you can use Corel CAPTURE to perform a screen capture). Printing Publications with Chapters of different orientations. Publications containing chapters with different orientations may not print correctly if the orientation of the first chapter is the same as the orientation currently set up in the printer driver. To avoid this situation the user may do one of two things: 1. In the CorelPrn.INI file there is a section called [Config] ... modify the line that reads WarnBadOrientation= 1 to = 0. Note: Changing this switch will also disable the error message warning for other applications such as CorelDraw and Corel PhotoPaint. 2. Prior to printing the publication go to the Print Setup Options to set the orientation in the printer driver to be opposite to that of the first chapter. When the Bad Orientation error message comes up, say "Yes" to automatically change to orientation of the driver to match that of the first chapter. Printing more than one Tiled Page Trying to tile print more than one page at a time may cause a divide by zero error. Corel VENTURA Import Filter for Microsoft Word 2.0 Mastersoft Inc. supplies the Microsoft Word 2.0 import filter used by Corel VENTURA 5.0. This version is identified as W4W44F.DLL (in the \COREL50\PROGRAMS directory, file size 129,888 bytes, date stamp December 22, 1994 ). Mastersoft Inc. also supplies older versions of this filter with other software programs. While loading text using the Word for Windows 2.0 filter in Corel VENTURA 5.0, you may notice garbage text that appears at the top of chapter. If this is the case, you may already have the W4W44F.DLL filter loaded in memory using another application. To correct this problem, close Corel VENTURA 5.0 without saving your chapter and restart Microsoft Windows to remove the old W4W44F.DLL which was already in memory. Now try the import task again. Chapters with Microsoft Windows 2.0 text files, when saved and reopen may add blank paragraphs to the end of the text file. If this occurs, you may wish to use the @parafiltr on = tag which deletes all extra carriage returns, by using your word processor to place the following tag at the beginning of the text file: @PARAFILTR ON = Be sure to enter a space after the equal sign. This must be added from within your word processor, not from within Corel VENTURA. The extra paragraphs will be eliminated the next time you load this text file or open a chapter containing the text file. When you save the chapter, the extra paragraphs are permanently eliminated. If you want to retain two carriage returns at a few places in a document, but still use the @PARAFILTR ON = feature, place a space in front of the second carriage return. Corel VENTURA will see carriage return-space-carriage return rather than two carriage returns in a row and will not eliminate the second carriage return. CVPFIX.EXE Utility Instead of integrating the files into one document, Corel VENTURA simply remembers where the files are stored. It does this by maintaining a list of pointers in a chapter file. These pointers tell Corel VENTURA where to find the text and graphics files and how to position them in the formatted document. They also tell the program where to find the style sheet used to format pages and text in the document. Keeping the text and graphics files separate means that other documents can share the same text and graphics. It also means that you can edit the files in other programs at any time. Changes you make to the files are reflected in the Corel VENTURA document the next time you open it. Documents you create in Corel VENTURA can be divided into sections, called chapters, that make up a publication file. Just as a chapter links the text and graphics files in a document, a publication links the chapters so that you can manage each document as a unit. When publications or chapters have been moved using Windows File Manager or a DOS copy command, these pointers (the path) will be incorrect when opening the document. To correct the pointers, copy all the files used in the publicaion (including text and graphics) to a single directory use the CVPFIX.EXE utility. Corel recommends that you use the Publication Manager to move publications and chapters. To use CVPFIX Utility, use one of the following procedures: 1. From a command line: - From the File menu of the Program Manager, select Run... - type: C:\COREL50\PROGRAMS\CVPFIX.EXE 2. Add CVPFIX Utility to the Corel5 Program group: - Make the Corel5 program group the active window. - From the Program Manager, select File New. Select OK to add a Program item. - For Description, type CVPFIX Utility - For Command line, type C:\COREL50\PROGRAMS\CVPFIX.EXE (or appropriate path where (the corel applications) are installed. - For Working Directory, type c:\COREL50\PROGRAMS - For Shortcut Key, type None. Click OK to accept responses. -You can now double-click on the icon to launch the CVPFIX.EXE Utility. Hint: You can perform a multiple file selection using CTRL Clicking multiple publications) standard Windows conventions. COREL EQUATION EDITOR FONTS The Equation Editor provided with Corel VENTURA 5.0 requires two fonts: FENCES MTEXTRA The TrueType version of these fonts are installed with Corel VENTURA 5.0 by default. You can install the Adobe Type 1 version of these fonts using Adobe Type Manager. These fonts can be found on the following media: 1. On CD-ROM Disk #2: - FENCES.AFM, FENCES.PFB, and FENCES.PFM are stored in the \FONTS\TYPE1\F\ directory. - MTEXTRA.AFM, MTEXTRA.PFB, AND MTEXTRA.PFM are stored in the \FONTS\TYPE1\M\ directory. 2. On Diskette #18: - FENCES.AFM, FENCES.PFB, FENCES.PFM, MTEXTRA.AFM, MTEXTRA.PFB, and MTEXTRA.PFM are stored in the \EE_FONTS, uncompressed. DISPLAYING LARGE TEXT FILES IN COPY EDITOR When loading any large text file with many paragraphs, Copy Editor may not be able to display the entire file. Screen Capture Using Some Screen Drivers There is a problem pasting screen captures created using some screen drivers, especially if 24-bit images are stored on the clipboard. Alternatively, you can configure Corel Capture to save the capture to a file and then load the file into Corel VENTURA. DEFAULT STYLE SHEET If you prefer other fonts, less tags or additional tags, than are shipped with the standard Default.sty, do the following to update default.sty: 1. File/New 2. Modify the style sheet as desired 3. Go to Layout, Save Style Sheet As. . . 4. Overwrite the Default.sty file in \VENTURA\TYPESET Now whenever File/New is executed, your new version of the default.sty will be used. TAGWRITE DOCUMENTATION =================================================== The TagWrite user documentation is provided in PDF format on CD-ROM Disk 1 in the \TAGWDOCS directory. You can use Acrobat READER to display and print the documentation. Acrobat READER can be installed by running the AASETUP.EXE from the \READER\DISK1 directory on CD- ROM Disk 1. Database Publisher Documentation =================================================== The Database Publisher documentation is provided in PDF format on CD- ROM Disk 1 in the \DBPUBDOC directory. You can use Acrobat READER to display and print the documentation. Acrobat READER can be installed by running the AASETUP.EXE from the \READER\DISK1 directory on CD-ROM Disk 1. IMPORT FILTERS =================================================== Importing EPS files When importing EPS files do not use the All Files (*.*) option in the List Files of Type list box. You must choose a specific type of file such as PostScript (Interpreted) or EPS (Placeable). PRINTING =================================================== EPS Files EPS files placed in CorelDRAW! and Corel VENTURA 5.0 are now parsed for DSC color comments in order to determine the spot and process colors used. This is necessary in order to properly separate them for Postscript output devices. It is possible that some EPS files from outside sources will reference spot or user- defined colors that are not directly supported by Corel Applications.. This includes Pantone Color names that have been abbreviated (i.e. Pantone Wm Red). Separation of these colors is not supported. If the message unknown PANTONE color appears in the separations colors list (in the Separations tab of the Print dialog), then an unsupported spot or user-defined color has been detected. This color will not separate properly and yield an empty separation. You should then: 1. Deselect the unknown color in the list before performing separations. 2. Recreate the EPS file using only colors recognized by Corel applications. Printing Bitmaps on non- Postscript printers If you are encountering problems with printing bitmaps to a non-Postscript, then try setting the following flag in the \COREL50\CONFIG\CORELPRN.INI file: DumpEntireBitmap = 0 The default value is 1 but some printer drivers may cause system errors if this flag is set to 1. (HP Deskjet 500 series with driver version 5.X.) Text prints on top of graphic If on-screen text that is placed below a graphic, prints the text on-top of the graphic, add the following switch to the [Config] section of the CORELPRN.INI file. "UseTextBand = 0" When set to zero, each character of text is sent to the printer as a graphic object. Keep in mind that leaving this switch set to 0 decreases the quality and speed of printed text. "UseTextBand = 1" This is the default. It causes text to be printed using text bands instead of graphic objects. Objects appearing black in print preview (WFW 3.11) If you encounter problems with objects appearing black in the print preview when using Windows For Workgroups 3.11 and the SVGA 256 color driver, add the following line to the CORELPRN.INI file. "BadPreview = 1" = 0 This is the default. Printing to HP Deskjet 1200C/Paintjet XL300 If the file size of the printed file is too large and causes out of memory error then modify the CORELAPP.INI file [Config] section. Change UseClippingForFills=3 to UseClippingForFills=1. This drastically reduces the file size and the time it takes to print the file. Printing Texture Fills to HP Deskjet 500 series printers If Texture fills do not print correctly to HP Deskjet 500 series printers then users should contact Hewlett Packard Technical Assistance to acquire the Printer driver version 4.10 or later. Printing to Level 1 PostScript printers The Level 1 PostScript language may not print certain complex fills (texture fills, full-color fills, lenses etc.) placed in objects with multiple paths such as powerclips or text. Please consult the CorelDRAW manual for trouble shooting suggestions. Non-PostScript Printing - When printing texture and fountain fills using the Hewlett- Packard 4 Series printers, switch to raster mode. The switch is accessed from the Printers utility of the Control Panel. - See On-line Help for information on the printer-driver. Scaling CROP Marks A new entry can be added to the \COREL50\CONFIG\CORELPRN.INI file. The entry is: CropMarksToImage=1 This entry is used to provide printers marks at the corners of images rather that at the corners of the logical page (set in the application) when CropMarksToImage is set to 1. As images are scaled larger or smaller in the Print Preview (Print Options dialog box), the marks will move in or out proportionally with the scale factor. When CropMarksToImage=0, crop marks will appear at the four corners of page dimension. Plotting/Printing to Large Media When Plotting/Printing using a printer driver, the largest image possible is 32 inches by 32 inches. The Center Option in the Print Options menu will not work correctly on media exceeding 32 inches by 32 inches. The Fit to Page option may cause the Width and Height margins to exceed 32 inches, resulting in a warning message. It is best to use the Scale Option with the Maintain Aspect option selected. CDBEDIT The Program CDBEdit requires that VENTURA also be installed for it to run properly. . CHANGES TO DOCUMENTATION =================================================== Extended Technical Support Program In the Corel's Basic Support Services insert at the beginning of the CorelDRAW 5 Volume 1 manual, please note the following changes: the phone number for Benelux is 011 31 3462 61123. The alternate phone number for the U.K. is 011 44 703 814 142. (The first number listed for the U.K. is correct.) Libraries Catalog SYMBOLS: The symbol category called ANIMALS.TTF has been divided into two categories - ANIMALS1.TTF and ANIMALS2.TTF. In some earlier versions of the Libraries catalog: CLIPART: Some minor changes were made to the clipart included on CD-ROM Disk 1. For a list of changes, refer to the CLIPART.WRI in the \CLIPART directory root. MOVE LIBRARIES: The index refers to a MOVE_PCX directory which has been renamed to MOVE\LIBRARY. All actors and prop libraries (.MLB) will be found under this new directory. The Old West actors described on pages F-21 and F-22 are located in the GREET1.MLB, GREET2.MLB and GREET3.MLB files. Sample Visual Basic for Applications Commands "Page 342 of the CorelDRAW Users Manual Volume I refers to a file named "Sample.CDR". Please be aware that no such file was shipped and that the file name was used (and intended) strictly as a placeholder (i.e., filename.cdr, xxx.cdr) when describing the sample Visual Basic printing and export programs." The \DRAW\SAMPLES directory contains the following sample code. You will require Microsoft Visual Basic to compile this code. 1) DRAWAUTO.FRM 2) ABOUT.FRM 3) WINAPI.BAS 4) DRAWAUTO.MAK 5) CORELOLE.EXE Changes to the CorelVENTURA 5 Online Help Repeating Frames The help file states repeating frames repeat a maximum of five times only (the original frame plus five copies). This is not correct. VENTURA allows a maximum of SIX repeating frames per chapter. Therefore, if a frame is set to repeating it will repeat for the entire document (999 pages) if it is not turned off on selected pages. However, VENTURA cannot have more than six different repeating frames within one chapter. Merging Frame Tags The Merging Frame Tags says to select the "Style Sheet" it should say "Chapter". It Should read: 1. Choose Format, Manage Tag List. The Manage Tag List dialog box opens. 2. Click the Frame tab. The Frame dialog box is displayed. 3. Click Merge. The Open Chapter dialog box opens. 4. Enter the name of the Chapter or click on the Chapter that has the tags you want and click OK. The Tags from the merged chapter are merged (overwrite) with the frame tags of the open chapter. Changes to the CorelDRAW 5 Users Manual Volume 2 The CorelDRAW 5 Users Manual Volume 2 was reprinted for Revision E2. The following is a list of corrections to the Corel VENTURA section for Revision F2. Page 3: Using the Find and Replace and Spell Check commands The Find and Replace command can be used to find and replace items in one chapter at a time, not the entire publication. The same applies to the Spell Check command. Page 10: Keyboard shortcuts for Pick tool and Zoom tool The keyboard shortcut for switching from the Text tool to the Pick tool is Ctrl+Spacebar. The keyboard shortcuts for activating the Zoom-In, Zoom- Out and Full Page tools are F2, F3 and Shift+F4 respectively. Page 14: Base Page and Pasteboard The Pasteboard extends to the area below the base page, not just to the right of it as stated in the manual. Page 26: Printing in Draft View Borders around frames always print in Draft View even when the Hide Frame Borders command in the View menu is checked. Page 31: Printing a document Multi-chapter documents formatted as booklets must be printed chapter by chapter using the Print command; using the Print Publication command to print the entire document only works for single-chapter booklets. Page 47: Placing Vertical Lines between Columns For Inter-column rules to appear, the gutter width between the columns must be greater than zero. Page 48: Widow and orphan lines A widow line is the last line of a paragraph printed by itself at the top of a page or column; an orphan line is the first line of a paragraph printed by itself at the bottom of a page or column. Page 57: Document-wide operations The scope of the Spell Check and Find and Replace commands is limited to a single chapter at a time. In other words, you cannot use them to check the spelling or find and replace items across all chapters in a multi-chapter document. You must open each chapter and then perform the operations in question. Page 57: Adding new chapters Corel VENTURA won't recognize a chapter added using the Add New Chapter command unless you click on the base page with the Text tool or add something (a free frame, a text or graphics file, or a graphic object) to the chapter immediately after its been added. Page 63: Moving frames behind other frames or frames containing tables To move a frame that is completely covered by another frame you must either move the top frame out of the way or put the bottom frame on top of the other one by cutting and pasting it. To select the bottom frame, press the Tab key repeatedly until the frames sizing handles appear. If a table completely fills a free frame, it can be difficult to move the frame by dragging it with the mouse. To do, temporarily lengthen the frame by dragging one of the top or bottom handles. You should then be able to select the frame border and drag the frame. If you are not able to select the Frame with the Pick tool, select the base page frame or another object on the same page. Then, press the Tab key repeatedly until the frames selection handles appear. You can also move the frame is by using the Placement Roll-Up which is available in the Tools menu. Page 64: Resizing multiple frames You cannot resize more than one frame at a time with the mouse. However, if your desire is to make frames the same size, you can do so in one easy step by using the Placement Roll-Up: select the frames, choose Placement Roll-Up from the Tools menu, enter values in the Size boxes, and click Apply. If one of the frames is the correct size and you want the others resized to match it, select the correctly-sized frame last and just click Apply. Page 65: Adding backgrounds to frames Text in a frame with a black background does NOT automatically change to white, even if you're printing to a device that supports white on black printing. To create reverse text, use the ruling line technique described on page 153. Or, put the text in a frame or Box Text object filled with black (or another color) and change the texts color to white using either the Paragraph or Selected Text commands in the Format menu. Page 67: Adding borders to frames The Outline tool cannot be used to add borders to frames. However, you can select any of the buttons in the tool's flyout menu to access the Ruling Lines dialog box where you can apply a line above, below or around the frame. Text in a frame with a black background does NOT automatically change to white, even if you're printing to a device that supports white on black printing. To create reverse text, use the ruling line technique described on page 153. Or, put the text in a frame or Box Text object filled with black (or another color) and change the texts color to white using either the Paragraph or Selected Text commands in the Format menu. Page 68: Aligning Frames Free frames can also be aligned to a grid associated with the base page frame. To set up the grid, select the base page frame with the Pick tool, choose Grid Setup from the Tools menu and select the settings you want. To have free frames snap to the grid, be sure to enable Snap to Grid in the Grid Setup dialog box and in the Layout menu. Page 72: Setting text flow attributes To get text to flow around a free frame, the frame containing the text must be below the other frame in the stacking order. Since the base page frame is always at the bottom of the stack, text in it will always flow around a free frame unless the Flow Text Around Frame option is turned off for that free frame. If you have overlapping free frames and you want text in one of them to flow around a graphic in one of the others, the one containing the graphic must be first in the stacking order. To move a frame to the top of the stack, cut and paste it. Page 73: Adding ruling lines and fills to a frame Ruling lines and solid-colored fills cannot be applied from the Frame Settings dialog box. To apply ruling lines use any of the buttons in the Outline tool flyout menu, the Ruling Lines command in the Format menu, or the pop-up menu displayed by clicking the right mouse button. To apply solid-colored fills, use the Fill tool or the Uniform Fill command in the pop-up menu displayed by clicking the right mouse button. Ignore the second paragraph after step 3, which states that ruling lines can be applied by choosing a tag name from the Ruling Lines dialog box. The two methods described in the preceding paragraphs are only ways to apply ruling lines to frames. Page 77: Repeating a frame on other pages Contrary to the statement after step 4, there is no Mirror on Facing Pages checkbox for repeating frames. Page 79: Rotating frames Corel VENTURA accepts only positive values between 0 and 360 for frame rotation in the Frame Settings dialog box. Page 82: Anchoring free frames To anchor a free frame there must be enough room on the page for both the frame and the line of text containing its anchor. If you change a document such that the frame and the text no longer fit on the same page (perhaps because you enlarged the frame so that it completely covers the base page) that frame will move to the end of the chapter when you re-anchor the frames. The easiest way to fix this problem is to make the frame in question smaller. Page 84: Anchoring frames in a line of text When anchoring frames in a line of text, the paragraph containing the anchor should have Grow Inter-Line To Fit disabled in the Paragraph Settings dialog box (Typography tab). Page 88: Applying, editing and managing tagged frames Frame tags cannot be applied using the Frame Settings dialog box. Corel VENTURA does not alert you that changes you are about to make to a tagged frame will affect other frames with the same tag. All changes (except frame position) are automatically applied to other frames in the chapter with the same tag. Tools for managing frame tags are available through the Manage Tag List command in the Layout menu, not the Tags Roll-up as stated in the manual. Page 99: Inserting a non-breaking space The keyboard combination for entering a non-breaking space is Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar Page 100: Importing text Font (i.e, typeface) and size attributes in a text file are NOT preserved when the file is imported into Corel VENTURA. Page 101 and 157: Add to Files List and Insert at Cursor check boxes The Add to Files List option in the Load Text and Load Graphics dialog box adds the imported file to the Files List in the current chapter without replacing the file that might already be in the selected free frame. (Corel VENTURA never replaces a file on the base page regardless of whether the Add to Files List option is enabled.) The Insert at Cursor check box appears only if the insertion point is placed somewhere in the document prior to choosing the Load Text command. Page 105 - 106: Determining whether all text has been placed in a frame Instead of a selecting options from a list box to go to the first, next, previous or last page containing text from a selected file, you use the buttons at the top of the Go To Page dialog box. (The actual dialog box is different from the one pictured in the manual.) The leftmost and rightmost buttons go to the first and last page; those in the middle go to the next and previous page. Page 112: Creating a personal spelling dictionary You can't create a personal spelling dictionary from within the Spell Check dialog box. Instead, use Windows Notepad (or any other application, including Corel VENTURA, that saves text in ASCII format) to create an empty text file. Name the file whatever you want but give it a PD extension and save it in the COREL50\CUSTOM directory. The file's name will appear in the Dictionary list in the Spell Check dialog along with the built- in personal dictionary (SPLDICT.PD). Page 114: Using an alternate thesaurus The file you need to edit to use one of the other thesauruses supplied with Corel VENTURA is the Corelapp.ini file. You'll find the file in the COREL50\CONFIG directory. Page 115: Saving text under a different name or file format Corel VENTURA does not provide an option that lets you remove the formatting codes it inserts in text files. Page 120: About local formatting Corel VENTURA inserts a diamond symbol at the beginning of paragraphs with local formatting. As with other text symbols, you'll only see the diamond when the Tabs and Returns option in the Preferences dialog box is enabled. Page 122: Removing local formatting When you apply local formatting to a paragraph, Corel VENTURA puts the override symbol next to the paragraphs tag name. It does not add another tag with the same name and put the symbol next to it. Therefore, to removing local formatting by re- applying the paragraphs tag, you select the tag with the symbol next to it, not the phantom tag referred to in the manual. The underline, bold and italics buttons on the ribbon cannot be used to remove the corresponding attributes from selected text. Page 123 and 146: Using keys to adjust character spacing The Ctrl+Alt+I key combination decreases spacing while the Ctrl+Alt+K combination increases it. Page 128: Number of tags permitted in a style sheet Corel VENTURA limits the number of tags in a style sheet to 128. Page 134: Using the Side-by-Side Paragraphs button on the ribbon To use the button, first select the paragraphs by holding down the Alt key and clicking on them with one of the Text tools. Also, the Text tool that's used to apply the side-by-side formatting determines whether it's applied to the selected paragraphs only, or to all paragraphs with the same tags as the selected paragraphs. To apply the formatting to the selected paragraphs only, use the Freeform text tool. Page 142: Rotating paragraphs You cannot edit a rotated paragraph unless you return the paragraph to 0 degrees rotation. To select a rotated paragraph, hold down the Alt key and click on it with the Text tool. Page 148: Hyphenation dictionary setting The Freeform text tool cannot be used to override the hyphenation dictionary setting in the Paragraph Settings dialog box. Page 157: Importing graphics using the Mosaic Roll-U PGraphics can be dragged and dropped into a selected frame or into a frame Corel VENTURA creates for you if one wasn't selected. They cannot be dragged and dropped into the Files List. Page 158 - 159: Cropping and resampling a bitmap before importing You can neither crop nor resample a bitmap from the Load Graphic dialog box in Corel VENTURA. However, both operations can be done in Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Page 159: Cutting, copying and pasting graphics The statement that pasted graphics are stored in the CHP file as opposed to a separate file applies to linked or embedded graphics (i.e., OLE objects). Graphics pasted within Corel VENTURA that are not OLE objects remain as separate files. Page 164: Wrapping text around graphics Corel VENTURA's text wrap feature doesn't work with linked or embedded graphics. Page 165: Showing and hiding graphics Frames containing graphics display with an X in them when graphics are hidden regardless of whether the graphic is a bitmap or vector. Page 171: Using the drawing grid To have graphic objects snap to the grid, the Snap to Grid option in the Grid Setup dialog box and the Snap to Grid command in the Layout menu must both be turned on. The option in the Grid Setup dialog box is a local switch that turns snapping on and off for individual frames while the command in the Layout menu is a global switch that turns snapping on and off for frames that have snapping turned on. Page 176: Resizing multiple graphic objects You cannot resize more than one graphic object at a time with the mouse. However, if your desire is to make objects the same size, you can do so in one easy step by using the Placement Roll-Up: select the frames, choose Placement Roll-Up from the Tools menu, enter values in the Size boxes, and click Apply. If one of the objects is the correct size and you want the others resized to match it, select the correctly-sized object last and just click Apply. Page 179: Applying outlines and fills to several graphic objects at the same time You can apply the same outline and fill to several different types of graphic objects at once. To do so, simply select the objects and apply the outline or fill. Page 186: Sorting paragraph tags The ability to sort tags applies to any style sheet which has tags derived from the built-in tag types, not just the default style sheet. Page 192: Correction on using Quick Format Roll-Up to add headers and footers Clicking Apply in the Quick Format Roll-Up opens a dialog box so that you can enter the text you want to appear in the header or footer. Use the Chapter Settings command to edit the text thereafter. Page 194: First Match and Last Match The First Match and Last Match buttons used to insert text formatted with selected tags in headers and footers works for text on the base page only. In other words, you cannot have text in free frames inserted in headers and footers using the First Match and Last Match buttons. Page 199: Formatting headers and footers When modifying the Z_HEADER and Z_FOOTER paragraph tags to add space above headers and footers, you need to enable the Add Above Space at Column Top option. Otherwise, the extra space will not be added. Page 202: Adding footnotes Footnotes always appear at the bottom of pages. Disregard the text in the illustration which states that they can be placed at the end of a chapter. Page 222 and 223: Changing borders in tables To change the borders in a table, use the Pick tool to select the cells with the borders you want to change then click the border. (The mouse pointer changes to an I beam when moved over a border.) Page 232: Resizing the Cross-Ref Roll-U PThe size of the Cross-Ref Roll-Up is fixed, so disregard the tip about resizing it. Page 233: Inserting cross-references using the Insert Special Item command The Markers list in the Insert Cross Reference dialog box offers neither a No Marker nor a Current option. To do what the No Marker option was supposed to do (i.e, insert a cross- reference that refers to a marker that has yet to be inserted), just type the marker name in the Refer to Marker list box and choose OK. What the Current option was supposed to do (i.e., insert the current page or chapter number at the insertion point) can be done by leaving the Refer to Marker list box empty. Page 236: Resolving unresolved cross-references and markers The Cross-Refs Roll-Up does not have an Add Link or Unlink button. Instructions on resolving cross- references that entail the use of these buttons are invalid. Page 237: Finding a cross-reference or marker using the Cross- Ref Roll-Up. You cannot locate a cross-reference or marker by double- clicking it in the Cross-Ref Roll-Up. Instead, use the Find and Replace command. Page 238: Editing, moving and copying a cross-reference marker There Cross-Ref Roll-Up does not have an Edit button, so you must use the Edit Special Item command in the Edit menu to edit a cross-reference or a marker. To move or copy a cross-reference or marker in Draft or Page Layout view, position the insertion point immediately before it (the Status Line indicates when you're in the right spot) and while holding down the Shift key press the right arrow key. Then, choose Copy or Cut from the Edit menu. In Copy Editor view, simply drag to select the cross-reference or marker code and choose Copy or Cut. (The codes don't display unless Show Codes is enabled on the Copy Editor page of the Preferences dialog box.) Page 239: Linking a source to other cross-references You cannot change the cross-reference a marker refers to nor can you link a marker to additional cross- references using the Cross-Ref Roll-Up. (The controls needed to do this, namely the Link and Unlink buttons mentioned in the manual, don't exist). Page 245: Editing equations After editing an equation inserted using the Insert Item command, choose the Size Frame to OLE Object command to resize the equation's frame so that the equation displays at the correct size. (The command is in the pop- up menu displayed by clicking the equation with the right mouse button.) Page 368: Indexing a range of pages To have a dash appear between the first and last pages in a range of pages (e.g., 1-5), you must select [P#]- [P#] from the Preset Formats list in the Table of Contents and Index dialog box. Page 296 to 298: Using the Find & Replace command Since the scope of the Find & Replace command is limited to the current chapter, there is no option for searching the entire document in the Find & Replace dialog box. Page 308: Inserting an index reference The instructions for inserting an index entry at the insertion point using the Index Entries Roll-Up should read, If you positioned the insertion point where you want to insert the index entry, type the text for the entry in the appropriate entry box (i.e., the Main Entry or Sub-Entry box). Also, note that page numbers don't display in the Index Entries Roll-Up when an entry is added but will display after the index has been generated. Page 312: Editing index entries You cannot locate an index entry by double-clicking it in the Index Entries Roll-Up. Use the Find and Replace command instead. Page 328: Default Hyphenation setting in the Preferences dialog bo XChapters created in previous versions of Corel VENTURA (3.x and 4.x) lack information identifying the language dictionary used to hyphenate text. Before opening such chapters, use the Preferences command in the Tools menu to specify the appropriate dictionary. Corel VENTURA comes with dictionaries in several languages, so if the dictionary you need is not installed, refer to the online Help for instructions on how to install it. Page 358: Entering equations in a word processor Commands for creating equations in a word processor must include the characters $E entered immediately after the opening bracket. Page 360: Creating equations in a word processor Disregard the statement about being able to see equations created in a word processor using Corel VENTURA's equation language. Equations created in this fashion only appear when the text file is loaded into Corel VENTURA. Page 378: Importing fully styled Word 6, WordPerfect 6, and SGML documents There are no application-specific TagWrite import filters but rather a single filter (called TagWrite - Style Match RTF) that lets you import text files in RTF format. The other TagWrite filter, referred to as the TagWrite SGML Template in the manual, is actually called *TagWrite - SGML/Custom Template in the program. While the name has changed, the filter's function remains the same, namely to access templates created using the TagWrite Template Editor. Page 324: Deleting Corel VENTURA files In order to delete a chapter, you must first remove it from the document as described on page 319. Once removed, you delete the chapter as follows: 1. Choosing File under Operations 2. Selecting Chapters from the List Files of Type list bo X3. Select the chapter you want to delete from the Chapters list 4. Click the Smart Delete button.
