PORT ADDRESS 220h is the default used by SOUNDBLASTER and the STEREO-F/X. If you have another device using this PORT you should select PORT ADDRESS 240h. 8) Highlight the AUDIO IRQ LEVEL and press the ENTER key. IRQ 7 is used by the parallel printer port, LPT1. In most systems this will work fine. In some system with an ENHANCED PRINTER PORT you may experience difficulty sharing IRQ 7. Your system documentation should indicate the presence of an ENHANCED PRINTER PORT. If you experience a problem try IRQ 5. 9) Once you've configured an Audio Address and an Audio IRQ, save the settings using the F10 key, and Test the audio hardware. 10) Highlight "TEST AUDIO CONFIGURATION" in the Main Selection Menu and press the ENTER key. °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ»°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°º Main Selection Menu º°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°º Set Power-up Configuration º°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°º Test Audio Configuration º°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test Configuration ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test DMA Play (left) ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test DMA Play (right) ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test DMA Play (mono) ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test FM chips ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test SAA chips ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test MIDI output ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test MIDI input ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Test joystick ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° ADVICE: When configuring or troubleshooting it is always best to work with as few variables as possible. REASON: If the AUDIO HARDWARE does not function properly during the TESTS, adding software drivers WILL NOT resolve the problem. The first four tests for AUDIO should each produce sound on the appropriate speaker(s). If not, ENSURE; a) Your SPEAKERS or HEADPHONES are plugged into the connector marked "SPKR" or "LINE OUT" b) The volume control on the STEREO-F/X is set to its middle position. If the test still does not produce sound you should verify that the configured I/O port, and IRQ do not conflict with another device. ADVICE: Because the STEREO-F/X hardware is SOUNDBLASTER and ADLIB compatible, it will conflict with these products if they are installed in the same machine. ADVICE: If you are unsure about the I/O port, DMA or IRQ settings of another adapter, then remove it from your PC and re-test the AUDIO HARDWARE. The SAA CHIPS TEST will only work if you've purchased and installed the SAA chips. These optional SAA 1099 Voice Synthesizer Chips for the STEREO-F/X support older software specifically written for the CMS Game Blaster card. These chips are not used by software written for the standard Sound Blaster card, nor by ATI STEREO-F/X drivers. SAA chips MAY be available for a small charge from ATI Customer Support if they are required for a specific application. The MIDI OUTPUT AND INPUT tests require that you have a MIDI device connected. The JOYSTICK test requires that a JOYSTICK be connected and that the GAME PORT IS ENABLED (on the main menu). ¯ If you do not get the EXPECTED results from a test, check the notes above for possible reasons. When you are satisfied that the audio hardware is functioning normally, proceed with the installation: 11) Highlight GAME PORT and press the ENTER key. ¯ If your system has a MULTI I/O card which has a GAME PORT, you should not enable the GAME PORT on the STEREO- F/X. ¯ If you DO NOT have a JOYSTICK or other device which connects to the GAME PORT you can select DISABLED. ¯ If you have a JOYSTICK connected to the GAME PORT and your system is a FAST 80386 or 80486 then select FAST. ¯ If your system is slower, then select SLOW. °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ»°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°º Main Selection Menu º°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹°°°°°°°°°°° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°º Set Power-up Configuration º°°°°°°°°°°° ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ»°°°°°°°° º Set Power-up Configuration º°°°°°°°° ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹°°°°°°°° º Audio Port Address : 220h (Recommended) º°°°°°°°° º Audio IRQ Level : IRQ7 (Recommended) º°°°°°°°° º Game Port : Disabled º°°°°°°°° º Audio Mix : Off ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿° º Audio Input Level : Line ³ Game Port ³° º Buffered DMA Play : Disabled ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´° ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͳ Disabled ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Fast ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°³ Slow ³° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ° °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° 12) Highlight AUDIO MIX and press the ENTER key. AUDIO MIX is used to determine whether signals on the Input jack are passed to the output jack. Settings are ON and OFF. The AUDIO MIX setting can be changed after power-up using the DOS MIX utility, or the Windows Mixer. 13) Highlight AUDIO INPUT LEVEL and press the ENTER key. AUDIO INPUT LEVEL is used to match the MIC/LINE input connector to the type of sound source you will be using. If you intend to plug a microphone into the STEREO-F/X card you will select "MIC". If you are connecting the output from a RADIO or TAPE PLAYER you should select "LINE" 14) Highlight BUFFERED DMA PLAY and press the ENTER key. The STEREO-F/X incorporates a hardware buffer for DMA transfers. Under Windows 3.0, this improved the sound playback quality. DMA buffering can also be accomplished using an memory manager (such as EMM386). Consult the memory manager manual for details. In most systems, BUFFERED DMA PLAY can be enabled, but if any sound difficulties arise, try disabling this feature. 15) Press the F10 key to save the settings, then Test the Audio Hardware again. If you enabled the joystick port, test that as well. ***************************************************************** C. Installing the Windows 3.1 Drivers: ***************************************************************** If you unzipped the SFXUTL.ZIP archive using the PKUNZIP -D option, you'll find the Windows files installed in the \SFX\WINDRV directory. If not, you can manually move the following files into that subdirectory: Directory of C:\SFX\WINDRV . 01-18-94 1:27p .. 01-18-94 1:27p ATIFM DRV 23280 05-05-92 10:58a MIXER EXE 12368 05-04-92 1:59p MIXER30 HLP 5395 05-11-92 4:33p MIXER31 HLP 6913 05-11-92 4:33p OEMSETUP INF 389 04-22-92 2:35p READ ME 1125 04-29-92 11:49a SFX DRV 29536 05-04-92 1:17p SLIDER DLL 10240 05-01-92 4:58p VATIFMD 386 5542 02-06-92 3:10a VSFXD 386 5648 04-29-92 11:44a All Windows driver installation is done FROM WITHIN WINDOWS. 1. Start Windows, and load the Windows Control Panel. 2. In Control Panel, select the Drivers icon. 3. Check for any previous sound drivers you might have installed, including: Ad Lib Creative Labs Sound Blaster PC Speaker Driver and any other sound drivers that you see. Remove all of these drivers before proceeding. To remove a driver, highlight the appropriate selection and click on the Remove button. Make sure that you restart Windows (as prompted) after removing each driver. 4. When any previous sound drivers have been removed, you can install the ATI sound drivers. Click on the Add button, and choose the "Unlisted or Updated Driver" entry. 5. Windows will prompt you to insert a disk. Type in the path to the STEREO-F/X Windows drivers and click OK. eg C:\SFX\WINDRV 6. You should see a window listing the following options: ATI STEREO-F/X Windows 3.1 Driver ATI Windows 3.1 FM Sound Driver Highlight either one and click OK. Both drivers will be installed, regardless of which you choose. 7. You may see the following message: The required sfx.drv driver is already on the system. Do you want to use the current driver or install a new driver? Choose either New or Current. New will place a fresh copy of the drivers in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory, while Current will use the drivers already there. 8. Windows will then confirm the Base Address, IRQ and ROM version of your STEREO-F/X. Click OK. 9. You will then be prompted to restart Windows. Changes will not take effect until Windows is restarted. 10. The FM driver will allow you to play MIDI files through the internal FM synthesizer. However, the MIDI mapping must be properly set. In the Windows Control Panel, open the MIDI Mapper icon. If you have a default setting or have previously loaded a Sound Blaster driver, some of the MIDI mapper settings may no longer be valid, and an "incorrect settings" error message may result. In the MIDI Mapper, select Setups and then click on the NEW button. A message box will appear prompting you for a name. Type in any name (for example "ATI MIDI MAP"). A MIDI Setup window will appear. You must now select a valid Port Name for each MIDI channel. 11. To select a valid Port Name for MIDI channels, click on the arrow button to the right of each Port Name box. Three options should be shown in a menu. STEREO-F/X MIDI Driver will send the MIDI information on that channel out to the external MIDI out connector (if you've attached the optional MIDI Extender box) which can be connected to an external synthesizer. ATI FM will send the MIDI information to the internal FM synthesizer (on-board the STEREO-F/X). [None] will disable that channel. Configure the MIDI Map as follows: a) if you want all information sent to an external synthesizer, set each port to STEREO-F/X MIDI Driver. b) if you want all information sent to the internal FM synthesizer, set each port to ATI FM. c) if you want both, the Microsoft Windows 3.1 standard recommends that you set channels 1 through 12 to the external MIDI device (STEREO-F/X MIDI Driver) and channels 13 through 16 to the internal FM synthesizer (ATI FM). 12. If you want to use MIDI input with a Windows program such as "Music Time" you MUST run Windows in standard mode using the "WIN /S" command. MIDI input will NOT work in 386 Enhanced mode unless you have a VERY fast computer. To be safe, always run Windows 3.1 in standard mode when using MIDI input. ***************************************************************** D. Installing the Windows Mixer: ***************************************************************** In addition to the Windows sound drivers, the \SFX\WINDRV directory contains a MIXER utility for Windows. It can be installed as follows: 1. Start Windows. 2. In Program Manager, highlight the Group that you'd like to place the Mixer in (eg "MAIN" or "ACCESSORIES"). 3. From the Program Manager menu, select File, New. 4. Click "New Program Item", OK. 5. In the Command Line field, enter C:\SFX\WINDRV\MIXER.EXE (or use the Browse option to locate this file). Click OK. 6. The Mixer should appear in your selected Group. ***************************************************************** E. Hints & Tips ***************************************************************** 1. The STEREO-F/X supports the following digital audio sampling rates: MONO STEREO ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÑÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» Record º 4-44.1 kHz ³ 4-22.05 kHz º º ³ º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ Play º 4-44.1 kHz ³ 4-44.1 kHz º º ³ º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ º ³ º ADPCM º 4-44.1 kHz ³ 4-22.05 kHz º play º ³ º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÏÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ Note that the Microsoft Multimedia Windows recommended rates of 11.025, 22.05 and 44.1 kHz are supported. Setting samples rates outside the values in this table is not recommended. 2. Playing sound files with high sample rates requires a suitably fast CPU and hard disk. On machines slower than a 12 megahertz '286, you may have problems with 22.05 kHz STEREO and 44.1 kHz MONO. If your machine is unable to keep up, the sound file will simply stop after playing the initial segment. If you are experiencing this problem, try using a slower sample rate so your computer can keep up. 3. For the same reason, you cannot play sound files at higher sample rates directly from floppies, as floppy disks are simply not fast enough to keep up with the audio. On a two floppy system, you can install the STEREO-F/X for playing games, but the full software functionality will not be available. ***************************************************************** F. DOS Utilities ***************************************************************** LEVEL EXE Switches the input level between LINE and MIC settings MIX EXE Controls whether the input signal is passed through to the output. Settings are ON or OFF. RESET EXE Resets the DSP (digital signal processor) to power- on defaults. Some software may leave the sound card in an undetermined state. Use RESET before running another application. SFX EXE Installation and Configuration Utility SFX HLP SINFO EXE Diagnostic used to determine the ROM version of your sound card. Run this utility and record the results before contacting ATI Customer Support. VOLUME EXE Software volume control, accepts a value between 0 and 255. Power-up setting is 128. ***************************************************************** G.
