MINSTALL script information Description ----------- These drivers provide OS/2 multimedia audio support for the Advanced Gravis UltraSound line of audio cards. The drivers support simultaneous playback of WAVE and MIDI audio streams through the UltraSound card. Installation instructions ------------------------- To install the drivers, unzip this package onto a floppy disk and run the OS/2 MINSTALL utility. Select UltraSound from the list of installable drivers, and respond to the installation program's inquiries about your UltraSound. Once the install script has completed, reboot your machine. NOTE: If your UltraSound software is installed in a directory other than C:\ULTRASND, you will have to adjust your config.sys file. Change the line: RUN=C:\MMOS2\ULTRALDR.EXE C:\ULTRASND\ULTRASND.INI to point to the actual UltraSound directory. Eg, if your UltraSound software was installed in D:\SOUND\ULTRA, then change the line to: RUN=C:\MMOS2\ULTRALDR.EXE D:\SOUND\ULTRA\ULTRASND.INI Known limitations ----------------- These drivers are ALPHA drivers and, as such, are unsupported by Advanced Gravis. The drivers have the following known limitations, which will be addressed in future releases: - 44KHz 16-bit stereo WAVE files may play with crackling and popping sounds on some machines. - MIDI patch loading is optimized for cards with at least 512K of GUS memory on board. UltraSounds with 256K of memory may experience performance and sound problems while playing MIDI files. - The driver provides no explicit support for DOS sessions. This means that if a DOS session tries to access the UltraSound card, it can, but it might corrupt the state of the UltraSound drivers. To restore the state of the drivers, after using DOS audio, try doing the following: 1) Run ULTRINIT in the DOS box and set up the mixer appropriately, 2) Run ULTRALDR (supplied with this package) in an OS/2 session with the parameter "" (quotes required). This will instruct the driver to ignore any currently loaded MIDI patches and to reload them when necessary. Problem reporting ----------------- As this is the first Alpha release of the drivers being distributed, it is likely that new difficulties ("bugs") with the drivers will be discovered. If you discover a problem that has not been addressed in this README, then please fill out the TECHINFO.DOC form and e-mail it via the InterNet to: os2.driver@gravis.com Goodbye ------- Thanks for taking the time to try out these drivers. Look forward to future updated releases of these drivers to be released within a short time after this release. Have a Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays, and Enjoy using your UltraSound under OS/2... David Bollo Advanced Gravis
