DETAILS REGARDING THE INTEL EtherExpress(tm) 16 DRIVERS FOR SERVERS AND DOS WORKSTATIONS IN 3+SHARE NETWORKS ===================================================== This README file does not explain how to configure the EtherExpress boards. For help configuring the boards, refer to the Expert's Guide to Configuring the EtherExpress 16 and 16TP Boards or to the Complete Guide to Installing and Configuring the EtherExpress 16 and 16TP Network Adapters. DRIVER INSTALLATION FOR SERVERS =============================== Here's how to install the driver in a server: 1. Follow the PC Server installation instructions in the 3+Share Installation and Setup Guide. 2. During the installation process you will be prompted to select a network adapter from a menu. Select the Etherlink adapter, even though you will be using the Intel EtherExpress adapter. 3. With one exception, follow the installation procedure to completion. Before rebooting the computer to bring the server into operation, place the Intel diskette into drive A:. Copy the A:\3SHARE\3EXP16.SYS file to the \3DRIVERS directory on the server. 4. Edit the server's CONFIG.SYS file. Replace the Etherlink driver (ETH.SYS) in the CONFIG.SYS file with the EtherExpress driver. In other words, replace the Etherlink driver with this: DEVICE=\3DRIVERS\3EXP16.sys The driver will automatically configure itself to match the configuration of the EtherExpress board, so you need not include any configuration parameters in the CONFIG.SYS file. However, if you experience any compatibility problems, or if you want to explicitly set the I/O address for the driver, you may place the I/O address on the command line in the CONFIG.SYS file, like this: DEVICE=\3DRIVERS\3EXP16.sys 300 5. After you have edited the CONFIG.SYS file, reboot the computer. Look for the driver's logon message as confirmation that the driver has been correctly installed. DRIVER INSTALLATION FOR DOS WORKSTATIONS ======================================== Here's how to install the driver: 1. Follow the instructions in the 3+Share Installation and Setup Guide for "Creating PC Netstation Startup Disks." 2. To create a startup disk, you must use the 3Com utility MAKEDISK. Make sure you read 3Com's release notes that came with your NOS, as there are important corrections to some editions of the 3Com manual. 3. As you interact with MAKEDISK, you will be asked to select a network adapter from a menu. Select the Etherlink adapter even though you will be using an EtherExpress adapter in the workstation. 4. Once MAKEDISK is finished, and the startup diskette is made, edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the startup diskette. Replace the EtherLink driver command (DEVICE=\3DRIVERS\ETH.SYS) with an EtherExpress driver command (DEVICE=\3DRIVERS\3EXP16.SYS). 5. Copy the EtherExpress driver (\3SHARE\3EXP16.SYS on the Intel diskette) to the \3DRIVERS subdirectory on the startup disk. The driver will automatically configure itself to match the configuration of the EtherExpress board, so you need not include any configuration parameters in the CONFIG.SYS file. However, if you experience any compatibility problems, or if you want to explicitly set the I/O address for the driver, you may place the I/O address on the command line in the CONFIG.SYS file, like this: DEVICE=\3DRIVERS\3EXP16.sys 300 6. After you have edited the CONFIG.SYS file and copied the driver, reboot the computer. Look for the driver's logon message as confirmation that the driver has been correctly installed. ***
