Philips Interactive Media Systems PO Box 80002 Eindhoven The Netherlands February 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The software on this diskette supports the ISO9960 volume and file structure for CD-ROM drives for use under MS-DOS Version 3.1 (or higher) The files included are : README. - This text file! CDROM.SYS - Universal device driver to support the Philips serial CD-ROM drives and host adaptors. MSCDEX.EXE - Microsoft (tm) extensions to support the file system. AUDIOTSR.EXE - Terminate and Stay Resident Utility to play CD-Audio discs on CD-ROM drives which have an Audio facility. AUDIOWIN.EXE - Microsoft Windows 3.0 application program, which allows you to control the CD-ROM drive as a CD-Audio player. AUDIOWIN.HLP - Microsoft Windows 3.0 help file for AudioWin.Exe program INSTALL.EXE - Automatic Installation Utility. AMUSIC.EXE - Audio Utility. This device driver adheres to the Microsoft specifications for control of optical drives using personal computers and MS-DOS. Please read the installation manual. An installation program is included for automating the installation procedure. Run the program INSTALL to use it. How to run the automatic installation program : (INSTALL.EXE) At the DOS prompt (C:>), type: A:INSTALL This installation program will copy the necessary files to your boot disk (hard disk) and will also adapt your system configuration files to be able to use your CD-ROM system. Check the installation manual for specific information needed to support non-standard hardware or software configurations. => For more information on device driver installation, refer to the MS-DOS reference manual. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Updating from previous CD-ROM Device Driver versions ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you use the automatic installation procedure (INSTALL.EXE), you must manually edit the CONFIG.SYS and delete the line containing DEVICE=olddriver, after the installation program has been terminated. E.g.: DEVICE=C:\CM153.MSC /D:CDROM /P:340 should be removed from the CONFIG.SYS file. If you install the new device driver manually, replace the line containing the old device driver by a line referencing to the new device driver. See also the installation manual. Reboot the system after the modifications in the CONFIG.SYS file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CDROM.SYS Device Driver v1.10 release notes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CDROM.SYS : --------- o "/E" parameter : when using expanded memory, be sure that the expanded memory option is NOT included in the MSCDEX command line. When using the "/E" switch, you must be sure that the expanded memory frame address starts at a 64 KB physical boundary. Most expanded memory software programs provides such an option. Please read the appropriate manual. DOS 5.0 : DO NOT USE EMM386.EXE ! If other programs require the use of this program, avoid the use of the /E option. o "/X" parameter : this new command parameter has been added in order to comply to some mixed mode applications. These mixed mode applications typically uses separate left and right audio channels in monoral mode. The "/X" parameter swaps the left and right channel. You may include this parameter only if you are sure that the left and right D/A audio channels are effectively swapped. MSCDEX.EXE : ---------- o The install program will always put MSCDEX on the first line of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When GRAPHICS.COM is used, MSCDEX must be installed after GRAPHICS.COM has been loaded. Therefore modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that MSCDEX.EXE is loaded after GRAPHICS.COM. o IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR DOS 5.0 USERS : If you did not install DOS 5.0 using the upgrade kit, you MUST run the SETVER.EXE program to allow MSCDEX 2.20 to run under DOS 5.0. This must be done only once. Type following line from the DOS command prompt : SETVER MSCDEX.EXE 4.00 [Enter] Future versions of MSCDEX.EXE will overcome this problem so that SETVER is no more needed for the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions utility program. AUDIOWIN.EXE : ------------ o "/L" parameter : this command switch has not been implemented. Use "/D:" in stead. o The default parameters for AUDIOWIN.EXE are /D:CDROM01 /U:0, which is the default device name ID of the device driver and the first unit. o AudioWin supports now volume control. This can be controlled by using the slidebar in the window or by keyboard commands up-arrow or down-arrow AudioWin includes a Help Utility (Use F1 key or Help in system menu) Only CDROM-XA capable systems supports volume control. Other drives will only be able to switch the volume on or off. AUDIOTSR.EXE : ------------ o Volume control with up-arrow / down-arrow o Keyboard usage redefinitions in text mode: Move player one line up: [PgUp] Move player one line down: [PgDn] Move player to top of screen: [Home] Move player to bottom of screen: [End] INSTALL.EXE : ----------- o INSTALL.EXE copies now the AUDIOWIN.HLP to the install directory. o A CR/LF is added to the last line of CONFIG.SYS is none was present. o Some messages were corrected. AMUSIC.EXE : ---------- AMUSIC.EXE is a utility that can be called by some mixed mode CD-ROM applications. This utility is meant as a replacement in order to work with the CDROM.SYS device driver. AMUSIC.EXE complies fully to the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions Version 2.20. How to use AMUSIC.EXE: 1. AMUSIC 2. AMUSIC 1st syntax : Stop Audio on the CD-ROM player. 2nd syntax : Start Audio playing from mb:sb:fb up to me:se:fe, where : P Philips CD-ROM player (dummy parameter) : nn Start Minute : nn Start Second : nn Start Frame : nn End Minute : nn End Second : nn End Frame : B Both Audio Channels enabled (Stereo) L Left Channel on both outputs (Mono) R Right Channel on both outputs (Mono) Example: AMUSIC P 03 00 33 04 10 20 B This will instruct the CD-ROM player to start playing in stereo mode at time code 03:00:33 up to 04:10:20 Warning: AMUSIC assumes the device driver ID to be CDROM01 (default) and Unit number 0 (first drive connected) CDROM$$$ interface: ------------------ The CDROM.SYS device driver does not include the CDROM$$$ interface. All applications which use this interface will NOT work. Please install the applications in such a manner that they will not try to call the CDROM$$$ functions. This can mostly be done by NOT installing the software for LMSI nor Philips CD-ROM drives. If you are in doubts, please call your application's distributor. General Notes: -------------- The 1.10 release corrects : o CDD461 error handling improved o Handling of Multisession Disc (eg. Photo-CD) Note: only the CDD461-MS drive supports Multisession environments The 1.03 release corrects following problems : o Audio channel selection (Mammals, Comptons Multimedia Encyclopedia, Mixed-up Mother Goose) o Data Read Errors in Graphics Mode (EGA/VGA) o Audio channel busy monitoring o Improved scanning of DEVICE= line o Improved memory allocation scheme o New ERROR message: Error in command line! : there is an error in the command line (unknown keyword or illegal switch use) o New WARNING messages: /M allocation size reduced : this message means that the CDROM.SYS driver does not use the memory pool requested. The requested size is being reduced whenever the requested memory crosses a 64 KB page boundary. Main buffer allocated in next 64 KB page : the memory buffer could not be allocated in the current 64 KB page. In that case, the driver is\ actually reserving some memory which it does never use. To avoid this message, either reduce the /M value, either place another device driver in the CONFIG.SYS file before the CDROM.SYS driver.
