Release notes v1.04 Latest information and release notes ==================================== The drivers on this disk support the following installations: - NetWare* 3.11 server (using a NetWare 4.x driver) Driver: E100S.LAN v2.10 - NetWare 3.12 server (using a NetWare 4.x driver) Driver: E100S.LAN v2.10 - NetWare 4.x server Driver: E100S.LAN v2.10 - NetWare 4.1 SFT III servers Driver: E100SMSL.MSL v1.30 - Microsoft NT* 3.5x workstations/servers Driver: E100SNT.SYS v1.01 - DOS ODI clients Driver: E100SODI.COM v1.03 Updated drivers --------------- If updated drivers are available, you can download them from the Intel World Wide Web site (www.intel.com) or the Intel BBS Download Area (see the "Intel customer support" help file for phone numbers). New driver versions often include performance enhancements, increased compatibility, or bug fixes. It's a good idea to periodically check our WWW site or BBS for updated drivers. Reducing CPU utilization ------------------------ The Intel PRO/100 Smart adapter NetWare 3.x and 4.1 server drivers implement polled mode driver support. This can dramatically reduce CPU utilization. To load the driver in polled mode, add the MODE=1 parameter to the load line. For example: load e100s mode=1 However, some NLMs do not release control of the CPU with the adapter server driver in polled mode. Consequently, you may experience performance problems. If this happens, delete the MODE=1 parameter from the load line. DOS ODI client driver --------------------- Use the DOS ODI client driver to connect to a server library (for configuring a server) rather than using the driver for a full-time client configuration. The driver also doesn't run in promiscuous mode. Consequently, you won't be able to use traffic analysis programs (such as NetWare LANanalyzer* for Windows) with the adapter configured as a full-time client. EMM386* ------- If you use EMM386 and want to run SETUP.EXE, you must use EMM386 version 4.49 or later. This version comes with DOS 6.22 and is in the \EMM directory on the Intel Configuration and Drivers disk. PCI shared interrupts ===================== The server driver for the EtherExpress PRO/100 Smart adapter supports shared interrupts. However, you may have other PCI adapters or devices that don't support shared interrupts. If you think you have another PCI adapter that doesn't support shared interrupts (for example, a SCSI controller), try to * Run the PCI BIOS Setup program to assign a different interrupt to the other adapter. * Load the EtherExpress PRO/100 Smart adapter driver last. * Call the manufacturer of the other adapter for a shared interrupt driver. SFTIII mirrored servers ----------------------- If you mirroring one NetWare server to another, don't share an interrupt between the MSL-configured adapter and the NetWare server adapter. Run your BIOS Setup program for the server and manually assign an interrupt to either the MSL adapter or the NetWare server adapter. PCI configuration issues ======================== Intel has found that some PCI computers require additional configuration to install a PCI adapter. If you have trouble configuring your adapter, try the following suggestions or see the "PCI adapter installation" help file on the Configuration and Drivers disk. Check your PCI BIOS Setup ------------------------- Make sure the setting in your PCI BIOS program match the following setting: PCI Slot #: Slot where the adapter is installed Master: ENABLED Slave: ENABLED Latency Timer: 40 Interrupt: Choose any one of several that the BIOS Setup provides Edge-level: Level The exact wording of the parameters varies with different computers. Update your PCI BIOS -------------------- Make sure you're using the latest BIOS for your computer. See the online help file called "PCI adapter installation" for a list of phone numbers of the leading PCI computer manufacturers. * Third-party trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
