This directory contains a tutorial illustrating Enigma Logic's "SafeWord PC LAN-Safe" software for IBM PC's, XT's, PS/2's and compatibles running MSDOS, DRDOS, PCDOS and/or Windows. It implements an encrypting file system that is compatible with both local drives and network file servers. File-by-file or directory-by-directory encryption can be asserted within each workstation, so that sensitive information can be kept secure both on mass storage and as it traverses networks. This tutorial includes an animated illustration of the internal workings of typical broadcast-based LANs, focusing on the security problems that result from broadcasting everything to everybody. A demonstration copy of SafeWord PC LAN-Safe software is also available from our anonymous ftp site. For those of you that don't already know about this, just ftp to: ftp.netcom.com Then cd to: /pub/bbosen/Enigma and have a look around, paying special attention to the various "read.me" files. The PC Lan-Safe demo software is in this directory: /pub/bbosen/Enigma/PC-LanSafe Get all of the files there after examining the read.me file to make sure you are getting what you think you are getting. Note that this demonstration copy is severely restricted in terms of the strength of the cryptoalgorithm being used; we wouldn't want any of you playing with _real_ encryption without government authorization, would we?......... Also: if you get the demonstration software from /pub/bbosen/Enigma/ PC-LanSafe, then there will be _no_ point in getting this tutorial from /pub/bbosen/Enigma/Tutorials/VGA/Grasp/PC-LanSafe, as the demonstration software _also_ includes the tutorial! Enjoy!
