Welcome to StatLib, a system for distributing statistical software, datasets, and information by electronic mail, FTP, and gopher. This index is the reply you'll get to to the one-line e-mail message: send index sent to statlib@lib.stat.cmu.edu The StatLib software bundles up replies as shar archives. If you are on a Unix computer, use "unshar" (or just sh) to unbundle the replies. If you are not on a Unix machine, send the request send shar from general for more details. To examine the full index for any collection (for example the S collection) send a request of the form: send index from S. You may include several requests in a single piece of mail, but put each on a separate line. Here are some additional forms a request may take... send splines from S (Retrieves the splines material from the S collection.) send list of splines from S (Retrieves just the file names and sizes rather than the contents) A restricted search facility is also available. This is designed to allow you to search the archives of the s-news discussion to find certain keywords. For example to find all the references to the word "regression" in the first s-news digest (digest1), send the following message: find digest1 regression in s-news To search all the digests in the s-news archive use: find all regression in s-news To search for any lines that contain both the words "regression" and "transformation" use: find digest1 regression transformation in s-news Remember that this is a very simple search method. Please don't try extensive searches. StatLib will break up large requests into several smaller pieces. You can control the size of the chunks by including a line like: mailsize 100k in your request. If you have a deficient mailer and need to over-ride the return address, include a line like: path fred@wilma.com in you request. You can also, optionally, include the quit command to signal the end of you transaction. Send requests to "statlib@lib.stat.cmu.edu" even though replies appear to be coming from "statlibd@temper.stat.cmu.edu". You'll be talking to a program, so don't expect it to understand much English, and don't expect it to understand ANY other language (yet). If you can't directly send internet mail remember that someone will be paying for the communication costs, so be reasonable! The e-mail software which makes Statlib work is a (minor) modification of the netlib software. Netlib (netlib@research.att.com) distributes a great deal of quality mathematical software. You might want to send mail to netlib and ask for their index. StatLib can be reached via anonymous FTP. Ftp to lib.stat.cmu.edu (128.2.241.142) login with user name statlib and send your e-mail address as the password. StatLib also offers gopher and WWW services. If you can't find StatLib listed on your local gopher server, then the relevant information is that you need to connect to port 70 on lib.stat.cmu.edu. For WWW, the StatLib URL is http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/ or, if that doesn't work http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/.index.html Many of the StatLib collections accept submissions. If a collection accepts submissions, you can obtain directions by sending a message like send submissions from general where general is replaced by the appropriate collection. Some StatLib material is only available via FTP or Gopher. This is generally the case when the files are very large or must be transmitted as 8-bit binary information. If **all** else fails, send mail to Mike Meyer (mikem@stat.cmu.edu) with details of the problem. I'll try to help you, if I can. ============================================================================= Occasional snapshots of this archive are included in Prime Time Freeware for UNIX, a semi-annual, mixed-media (book/CD-ROM) publication of UNIX-related freeware. Each issue contains two ISO-9660 CD-ROMs and an explanatory book. GNU Zip is used to compress the archives, allowing the two discs to contain over 5 GB of freeware.
