BATTLE FOR STALINGRAD Sept 1942 to Feb 1943 The bloodiest conflict of World War 2 was fought for the city of Stalingrad (now Volgagrad). In late Summer 1942, the Germans launched their Summer offensive in Russia. Spearheaded by the German 6th Army, it had to goals, the capture of Stlaingrad and the cutting of the Volga River transport system and the capture of the vital Caucasian oil-fields. Neither was achieved and the elite 6th Army was bogged down for moths within the city in very heavy street fighting. Surrounded and starving they surrendered in early 1943. Of the 110,000 prisoners taken, only 10,000 lived to return to Germany after the war ended.
