                             HOW TO START THE GAME

To start Castaway, use the following instructions.

              1. Start your computer in the usual manner.
              2. Insert the ButtonWare game disk into Drive A.
              3. Type A: and press Enter.
              4. Type CASTAWAY and press Enter.
              5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

To start South America Trek you would use the same steps
as shown for Castaway, only at step 3 you would type SAMERICA
instead of CASTAWAY. If you are using a monochrome monitor
or a one color graphics monitor you should add an M to the
end of step 3, (e.g. CASTAWAY M). This will allow the screen
to be more readable on these monitors.

                                  HOW TO PLAY

A ButtonWare Adventure is a fictional novel in which you
are the main character. You will be given a quest which you
must successfully complete. You may also be asked to
         collect treasures during your travels.

Your PC will become your guide. It will tell you what
it sees and hears, and will obey your commands, (most of the
time). Although it speaks fluent English, it has trouble
understanding long sentences. Please limit your commands to
not more than two words, with the verb as the first word
(e.g. throw ball). If the computer does not know or
understand a word, it will tell you so. In that case, please
use another word of similar meaning.

We strongly advise you to build a map during your
travels so that you can easily return to previously explored
         areas.

The computer will give you the following information at
the start of each round of play:

              1. A description of your current location.
              2. Items that you can see at this location.
              3. Directions in which you can move (n-north, s-south,
                  e-east, w-west, u-up, d-down)
              4. Treasures will be marked by an '*' before and after
                  the word.

You must then respond by typing the action you wish to
         perform.

                                      -4-

                                 * * HINTS * *

Most actions require two words such as:
              Light torch
              Get ruby
              Drop axe
              Examine door

However, some actions need only one word:
Help - for clues or advice
              Quit - to stop playing

Others only need a single letter:
U,D,N,S,E,W - which mean go up, go down, go north, etc.
L - look to see where you are
            I - list your inventory.

To save your current status so that you can resume play
         later, type SAVE GAME.

BUTTONWARE HAS OTHER PRODUCTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT!

ButtonWare offers a complete line of quality software.
Not only is it affordable, but it is known for setting new
standards. Here's a brief listing of our programs:

PC-FILE III - This is the database program that started
it all for ButtonWare. PC-File III is a program now being
used by over 500,000 people. The tremendous success has come
from ease of use, combined with power and flexibility.
PC-File III supports all common database functions - sorting,
printing reports and labels, four different types of
searches, ability to exchange data with a variety of
         programs, and much more.

PC-FILE/R - This database program starts where PC-File
III left off. It is the "next generation" offspring,
containing all of the capabilities of PC-File III. However,
it's far more powerful, containing built-in word processing
with Mail Merge, relational capabilities and pop-up help
         screens.

PC-TYPE+ - We call it the ultimate word processor. It's
quick to learn and has many advanced features, including Mail
Merge, spelling checker, keyboard macros, three levels of
help, and more. It works hand in hand with PC-Style and
         PC-File.

PC-STYLE - PC-Style analyzes the readability level of
your writing. PC-Style computes the percentage of long
words, personal words, action verbs, words per sentence and
average syllables per word. The built-in lexicon of action
verbs, personal words and default settings can be modified to
fit your writing needs. PC-Style works directly with
PC-Type+ and with any standard ASCII text document or
         Wordstar document.

              PC-GRAPH - An extension to PC-File III and PC-File/R,
PC-Graph will plot a single line graph of data from a PC-File
database or a report created with PC-File.

PC-DIAL - When you want to link your computer to
telephone lines, PC-Dial can handle it. PC-Dial is a general
purpose asynchronous communications program. It is simple
and straightforward, yet it has a wide range of capabilities,
including a built-in text editor, ability to "drop to DOS" to
perform DOS functions while on-line, ability to use scripts
for automating tasks, keyboard macros, and more.
