One weakness of the GEnie INDex function in the BB is that it does not provide you with information regarding whether you have marked or ignored a topic. In order to get that information, you must SET a category, and TOPic to display the topics. Then, your status regarding MARk and IGNore is shown. Since I browse GEnie by marking instead of ignoring, it is necessary that I periodically check the categories for new topics of interest to me. There are other ways of accomplishing this than the DO file which I have created here, but since this DO file may be useful for other purposes, I have uploaded it for you to see if it may be of some benefit to you. Maybe some would like to have a list of topics showing what's ignored and what's not to make some changes. Maybe other markers who use the IGNore and NEW functions, would occasionally like to get an index showing the status of the topics. I debated on how and where to start the do file, and decided to let it start from anywhere within the ST bulletin board. It will take you to the first category (doesn't hurt if you're there already), shift you into PROmpt NONE, for speed, and then go through the categories, getting the topic list. When it's through with the last category, it will shift you into PROmpt BRIEF. I don't know what each person's favorite prompt would be, so I took the middle ground. If your favorite prompt isn't brief, you can either change the last line, putting your preferred prompt after 14, or shift your prompt after the do file is through. The message you get from GEnie when going into prompt none about your prompt status being permanently set simply means that it is set until you set it again. The reason that the wait command is designed around the category number _and_ ? prompt is to avoid any confusion which might occur if a question mark in a topic triggered the Flash response. This do file will give a topic list in all 31 (currently) categories on the ST RT. If you don't want a topic list for a category, find the 4 line sequence for the category n, consisting of: 3 n|>** ** The "n" crowd| >wa n ?| 5| >wa n ?| and delete those 4 lines. Do this for each 4 line sequence undesired. Any of the comment characters; >** ** info| may be deleted if you're striving for speed. This do file is also easily modified for obtaining listings from other roundtables. To do so, simply delete the appropriate 4 line sequences as described above, including all those for which there are not categories in the other RT. If you are going to a RT for which there are more than 31 categories, you'll have to add some lines in a similar format. I have another handy function for such a listing. If this list, or a list created simply by getting an INDex of topics is saved to disk, you have a ready-made reference for topic numbers for REPlying, REAding, MARking, IGNoring, or whatever you like. I use this list in conjunction with the DCOPY.ACC. If I need to find a topic, I open DCOPY, T(ype) that file, and either flip through the pages, or use the whereis function to find a string. In term programs (Flash, Interlink) which give you access to the desktop, this can be very handy. I actually trim my listing down with a word processor by clipping each line at the author, deleting any wrapped lines. If you don't need the status, it can be clipped even smaller. In operation, this do file would be accessed while d while d while d while d while ll those for which there are not categories in the other RT. I use this list in conjunctitter and clicking the close box on the native file selector. After ALT-A and clicking on ST_INDEX.DO, the file will go into operation and obtain the topic list for all of the categories you have left in place. When it's through, you will be in the last category you left in place, say 31, with your prompt in brief, unless you change that. In operation, it's almost as fast as INDex, even if you get a list of _all_ the categories, and of course faster if you don't need topic lists for some categories. Summary: 0 If you want, you can run the do file just like it is. -or- 1 Modify do file by eliminating an unwanted category's 4 line sequences; elimination of comment section is optional. 2 Modify prompt at last line if you want other than brief. 3 Determine what disk your do file will be on, and what your default disk will be prior to operation, and have your capture on. 4 While in the ST bulletin board in terminal mode, at any ? prompt and from any category, use ALT-A, and select ST_INDEX.DO. 5 Wait for Flash and GEnie to provide you with your personal index. 6 Resume any activities in the bulletin board. 7 After logoff, examine the index for any topics which might need a change in status, marking or ignoring, or reading. 8 Make notes, save lines, or make do files to perform any needed operations when you're back in the bulletin board. 9 Save the index to disk; use DCopy.acc to find a topic when your need to. 10 Every once in a while, run ST_INDEX.DO again.
