TOP OF THE PAGE   Would you believe it?  Two weeks into October and it 
"""""""""""""""   is SNOWING!  Sure, it's a wet, sloppy, pre-winter 
storm, but none-the-less, it is a small preview (warning?) of what's to 
come.  (Yeeech!)

     During the cold winter months ahead, it is typical for BBSs and 
commercial services such as GEnie to run at peak level.  Coupled with 
the fact that the GEnie Star*Services program is now in full swing, the 
outlook for online fun and exploring during these cold winter days is 
excellent.

     Unfortunately, like with all new major efforts, sometimes things 
don't always go as planned.  To be frank, GEnie wasn't ready for such
an onslaught of callers.  Due to this situation, the system was plagued
with system slowdowns and message base troubles.

     Of course all of this didn't go un-noticed by the people upstairs 
and by the middle of the week things were pretty much back to normal.  
In fact, several RoundTable members mentioned that the system now seems 
even faster and more responsive then even before GEnie Star*Services 
began.

     Hopefully, you are having fun exploring the new system.  There's a 
lot to see and do.  And don't forget, to help guide you to these new 
areas, be sure to check out ST Elsewhere in this issue for some more 
interesting places to go while online.  You have access, take advantage 
of it!

     Another major area of interest is Aladdin ST.  Aladdin ST is a 
new terminal program that has all the usual bells and whistles, but 
with one major difference: It's designed to be used exclusively on 
GEnie!  Hopefully, Aladdin will be available by the time you read this. 
If not, it should be available RSN.  Watch for it.  If it's half as good 
as all the pre-release messages that been posted about it say it is, 
we're all in for a nice little treat!  (Neil Harris has uploaded a 
preview of what to expect from Aladdin ST.  See GEnie Online [GEN] for 
more details.) 

     The long-awaited CD_ROM from Atari is starting to generate a few 
messages.  If you're interested in learning more about this new 
technology and how it will affect you if/when it is released, check out 
CAT 14, TOPic 28 for details.

    Well, enough rambling.... time to get out the snow shovel and get 
down to some serious back-breaking work.  On second thought, I wonder 
what's happening over in the RSCARDS RoundTable....  Poker with the 
guys, or shoveling snow.  Decisions, decisions...

A SMALL REPORT FROM WAACE   Hi, we're just back Wednesday night from
"""""""""""""""""""""""""   the show. (We took a few days to tourist
DC.  Monday was a little slow; lots of things were closed with the
budget fiasco, but we did okay.)

     The show's a blur to me; I never can figure out how people write
such coherent summaries of it.  One minute spent demoing the 030, one
minute a Mac CD-ROM drive, another wiping up a Pepsi that Jennifer
spilled, another firing up the Tesla Coil and drawing a three inch arc
to my finger (that's a head-turner, I tell ya ... Bob Brodie looked
downright pale.  Didn't even volunteer!).  Just a bundle of impressions.

     THIS SHOW WAS GREAT!  The WAACE show has always been a major upper
for me -- this is my fourth or fifth year, and the *people* are so
psyched and enthusiastic that it's great.  I said last year it was my
favorite show of them all, and that hasn't changed.  That's why I went
to some trouble and brought a Tesla Coil; I burned up a hundred or so
dollars of 811-A tubes ($25 a pop) doing the demos.  But I'd written
about Tesla in Current Notes, the WAACE area magazine, and figured also
the people there deserved something special.  BTW, my thanks to Ralph
Mariano for pointing out I was melting down a plate in a tube; turns
out Ralph's an old radio hacker and knows this stuff.

     Let's see.  Lauren was patiently demonstrating Wordflair over and
over -- and brought some wickedly good after-show Scotch that saved me
on Sunday.  It was good to see Jim Allen and his brother Garrett as
well; we had a lovely chat about an SS396 Camaro and how to restore its
engine.  The DoubleClick guys were right next to us clicking away; we
even tried a double-clicker in the Tesla Coil.  Whups. The Codeheads
were awesome as usual, and Charles Johnson's speech at the banquet was
excellent; a lot of work went into it.  L&Y (dealer) looked very busy,
Frontier from England was there having fun, Dave Link and others from
HiSoft hopped the Atlantic to show up (!!), saw many familiar faces,
from Nathan to John Morales to Darlah to Jeff Williams to Jeff
Greenblatt to Ron Luks to Joe Waters to ...

     The place was pretty crowded Saturday -- hard to get around -- and
far harder to get around after I fired up the Tesla Coil (it took
awhile to "debug" a bad tube.)  Really drew a crowd, that did.  Sunday
the crowd was lighter, but very steady, and gave people a chance to
talk with vendors, not just glance quickly in the crowd.

     We showed an ST running a Mac CD-ROM drive (620 meg of software),
a TT running Spectre, a 68030 @ 18 mhz w/ 8 meg RAM extra ("Mega 12"),
and the Tesla Coil.

     Things blur in my mind ... it is one long, long, long airline
flight back to Denver with two kids, I'll tell you.  I'll bet the Atari
guys were wrecked.  Many of them came and they did a good session on
Atari's stuff.

     A weekend full of positives and without negatives. Such a deal!

     My thanks to the people that threw this bash, the people who came,
and everyone who made it such a good time.

ALADDIN FOR THE ST!   ST Aladdin is basically the same as PC Aladdin
"""""""""""""""""""   1.30.  It was ported from the Pascal source for
the PC version, though Tim was smart enough (or masochistic enough,
depending on your point of view) to port it to C first.  <smile>

     It has all the functionality of the PC version and then some, with
a few more bells and whistles, and the advantage of having been
released =after= GEnie Star*Services started.

     There is a Mac version in progress; I am doing the port.  There
will also be other versions for other machines, in time.

CD-ROM NEWS   The CD-ROM is available to US Developers now.  We have

products with the CDAR-504.  Now we are hoping to see some results from

only proper to make sure that there is software available to sell to
the purchasers of the unit.  At present there are only TWO CD-ROM disks
available.  One of them is Clip Art, the other is a collection of PD
Software.  Other titles are available overseas, we are investigating
the possibility of bringing them into the US.

GEnie ST ALADDIN,  a GEnie autopilot.  Adapted to GEM by Tim Purves of

Mulvey, Juan Jimenez, and Aladdin Software, copyright 1990 by General
Electric, all rights reserved.


      Now that all the legal requirements are out of the way, let me 
tell you about Aladdin.  The version I have is nearly version 1.0. Tim
wants to tweak up its speed a little before releasing it.

      Aladdin automates your sessions on GEnie and also provides some
tools for navigating around GEnie.  It has special features that cover
the bulletin boards, software libraries, electronic mail, and the
realtime conference room.  

      Once you start reading through the software library file lists,
Aladdin remembers each file you see.  You can browse through lists of
new files or of any file you've seen in the directory.  You can ask for
the long description or go straight to downloading the files you want.
Aladdin supports Zmodem downloads automatically -- you don't have to
click anywhere once GEnie starts the download because the program
starts itself.  At the WAACE show we called that the "look ma, no hands"
download.

     In a typical session, without human supervision Aladdin can dial
the local number, enter your user ID and password, wander around GEnie,
and log off -- leaving all the messages, mail, and file lists on your
disk to browse and reply and mark at your leisure, when the billing
clock is not running.

      Tim wants to make sure you know he didn't just port the software
over.  He took the original Pascal source code and rewrote it in C and
added a lot to make it an ST-type program.  Tim makes use of menus and
windows extensively -- one example is the GEnie index, which scrolls in
a window and is searchable so you can find the GEnie feature you're
looking for.

      Aladdin has an extensive script language.  You can write your own
or download them from GEnie.  I know Tim uses the same syntax as the PC
version, but I can't actually swear they're compatible.  Aladdin
scripts are in the ALADDIN roundtable's library and bulletin board.
Someone at Charles Schwab wrote a 1000+ line script to automate access
to their GEnie services.

      GEnie ST Aladdin has a big type-ahead buffer ("chat mode").  It's
several lines long, and really helps when you're in a realtime
conference.  What you type is not sent until you hit RETURN.  That way
the words you type don't get mixed up with messages other people are
sending.

      If you've ever tried to edit a message on GEnie (or most other
online services) you probably found the line editors to be a touch less
than perfectly user-friendly (how's that for diplomacy?).  Using 
Aladdin you get a text editor window to compose your message.  The 
original message (if you're replying) goes in another window.  Hit 
ESCAPE when you're done and the program stores your message until you
log in again.

      Personally, I can't live without Aladdin.  I have a Mac II at the
office, but for a long time used a DOS clone with GEnie PC Aladdin to
log into GEnie and follow about 10 bulletin boards.  Without the clone,
2 or 3 boards is all I can do.  Now I can use Aladdin at home on my ST!

      When Tim finishes tinkering with the code, it will be available
on GEnie.  The manual will be in a library for downloading and
eventually in printed form if you prefer a nicer looking, permanent
manual.  We'll probably let people post copies of Aladdin all over the
place, but we need to get some language from the legal dept to protect
ourselves from who knows what.

      How does Aladdin compare to other terminal programs?  When I want
to go through the bulletin boards, I use it 99% of the time.  If I just
want to wander around GEnie, I sometimes still use Flash along with
XYZ.TTP for downloads.  But since Aladdin will cost you less than $5 in
downloading time from GEnie, if you use GEnie bulletin boards or email,
it's something you need.

      The most common question at WAACE's GEnie booth was, "When can I
download this?"  I think that's a good sign.

      It sounds pretty good, right?  So what are we, crazy or something?
After all, it takes good money to develop software.  We're not even
forcing you to download it from GEnie -- share it with your friends, we
want you to have it.  The reason we do this is, we make our money
online, not by selling software.  On the PC, people who have Aladdin
are MUCH less likely to leave the service and are generally much
happier with what they get online.  So it's a win-win: you get more out
of GEnie, and we keep you as a customer longer.

One Pilot's Tale

Herr Oberst is never going to believe this one.....

       After bombing the Spitfire plant at Vauxhaul my He-111 was set
upon by a group of avenging Hurricanes.

     Though my valiant gunners managed to down four of the attacking
fighters the old Heinkle was pretty well shot up.  Before hitting the
silk, the last Hurrie manage to shoot out the port engine and knock the
starboard engine down to 30%.  We were still flying but only just.  It
was impossible to maintain level flight as our max speed was about 80 
mph.  By staying in a shallow decent we were able to maintain airborne
but a quick calculation showed that we would run out of altitude long
before we could make the channel.

     As we descended under 1000 ft, bail-out was considered but we then
realized that we were too low to jump and survive.  It was to be a
belly landing then.  I ran the alarm and told the crew to brace for a
crash landing.  Just before touchdown it occurred to me that our slow
rate of descent might just allow for a safer wheels down landing.  I
banged down the flaps and dropped the gear just as we softly set down
on some limey's field.  I taxied to a stop and as the crew were
destroying important papers we waited for the local constabulary to
take us off as guests of His majesty.  Nobody showed up?  (Must have
been tea time.)

     Well, I gunned up the engines and started to taxi.  We must have
taxied about 100 miles across England no problem, even straffed a
factory along the way.  We finally reached the channel where as the old
He-111 sunk beneath the surf we were rescued by a friendly flying
boat!  Thus our crew lives on to fight for the fatherland.

     Think on this option as your plane is full of holes and is in
danger of crashing.  It's not a bad way to see the British countryside.

MUTANT KEYBOARD   I am in the process of designing such a product for

and will be transparent to the system, i.e., the ST does not know it is

should work with any program designed for the ST, and yes, with any ST,
old 520 to Megas, to STe's.  I can't tell you precisely when it will be
available.  It is about 80% working at this point, so it shouldn't be

ZOOM=POWER   Zoom is coming out with two new models the first part of

LDW 2.0?   I had occasion to call LDW this week and inquire whether or

The fellow that I talked to told me that version 1.1 was the latest;
however, they would be releasing a new version 2.0 sometime in October
and that he was working on the documentation.

     I don't remember all of the new features that he told me about,
but he said that LDW 2.0 would be more compatible with Lotus 2.2
macros.  There will be no "chaining" (i.e., a worksheet is auto-
matically updated when cells in another are changed) as in Multiplan or
Lotus 3.0.  3-D graphs will be available in LDW 2.0.  You will be able
to print out your screen grid lines in LDW 2.0.

     LDW plans to notify registered users by mail when the upgrade is
ready for shipping.  No pricing has been set.  I suggested that they
post a notice on GEnie and the fellow I was talking to said that was a
good idea and they would consider it.

NEW ATARI MONITOR   I think the new color monitor from Atari will do
"""""""""""""""""   monochrome AND color. At least, I saw a TT running
a monitor that worked in all of the colour resolutions, and the
DuoChrome mode, which is the same as the ST's monochrome.  I could
barely tell the difference between the TT's 'duochrome' and an SM124
(ok, the SM124 is a little brighter and steadier, I think, but not so
much that you'd notice side by side).  However, I don't think it's
POSSIBLE to get a colour monitor to run the 1280x960 mode, unless you
buy a monitor that costs as much as the computer, almost.  I priced out
an NEC 4D, and believe me, it'd be a LOT cheaper buying two monitors,
even if it did wind up costing over $1000 bucks.  Add my name to a list
of people EXTREMELY CURIOUS about this potential for a zero wait state

     The only reason that you would need to have two monitors for the
TT is if you absolutely have to run 1280x960.  The TT Monitor will

CREAM OF THE CROP   The GEnie ST Libraries, with almost 17,000 files,

in the ST Libraries, I have the privilege of downloading many of the
new files.  Bear in mind that I don't play many games, so my list of
favorites will quite likely differ from yours.  I will occassionally
include some games, but only if the program itself is what I would

     What more could you say, other than these nifty little programs
from Tom Hayslett do EXACTLY what you expect them to do, and do it very
well.  TLC_BOOK is both an address book, and a DATEMINDER data base,
making sure you keep up with those important birthdays and
anniversaries.  This release is basically a demo, so it limits the
number of entries you can have to 10, but that's enough to see that you
want to keep it.

     TLC_PLAY will play any digitized sound in any format (any that is,
for the ST).  Incredible editing capabilities such as volume change,
stretch, and compress make it one of the best sound players around.

     TLC_NAMR allows the user to rename a file to include characters
not normally allowed in filenames.  Add an ATARI Fuji symbol, left
arrow, right arrow, and more to make your filenames really stand out.
Caution should be taken on renaming files, however, since ARC602ST.TTP
>>> WILL NOT ALLOW <<< files to have some characters in the name, and
will bomb.

     TLC_FORM is a great little formatting utility, and works as either
a program or accessory simply by changing the file extension from .PRG
to .ACC.

     TLC_ATTR allows you to see and adjust file attributes to files on
the disk.  This is a great little utility for changing archive bits,
hiding and un-hiding files, or just hacking around on the disk drive.
Again, caution is required anytime you have this power at your
fingertips.  Uneducated users could effectively lose valuable data.

     For LOW REZ users, this is an exceptional drawing program.  Pop-up
menus make it very easy to master.  There is an unusual user interface
that takes a short time to figure out, but interesting in it's
implementation.  Good tools make it so aspiring artists can create
masterpieces in minutes.

     The C source code availability increases this program's
attraction.  Looking through this code can make us all better
programmers, since we see some of the programming techniques used in
this nifty package.

     I was one of the lucky ones that got CODEKEYS in Glendale a while
back, and now I wouldn't be without it.  I've made keystroke menu
commands that didn't exist in previous programs, and have given my
mouse a well deserved rest in most cases.

     For those that haven't heard, CODEKEYS is the newest utility from
inside the CODEHEAD's imaginative brains.  This utility can be
programmed to reduce redundant or repetitive keystrokes or mouse clicks
(or both) and assign them in one easy keystroke of your choice.
You could turn CTRL-A into a full 128 character string, ALT-A into an
automatic menu selection, and ALT-CTRL-A into a menu selection
INCLUDING text entry in a dialog box.  A great little utility.  This
demo will make you want to go out and buy it.  (See GEnie Lamp #1.09
for a in-depth review on CODEKEYS. -ED.)

     Looking in my cliche` book, I see the one that fits this situation
is "This is only the tip of the iceberg,"  though there are countless
others that will tell of the immense amount of software and information
available in the GEnie ST RoundTable Libraries.  These few files caught

to write.  With almost 17,000 files in the libraries, there is
DEFINITELY "something for everyone" (I'm gonna throw this cliche` book

...MEECES TO PIECES   I am having mouse problems with my 1040STf.  The
"""""""""""""""""""   system is almost 3 years old.  It appears that
there is a bad connection where the mouse cable exits the mouse because
if I jiggle it there I can get it to work.  Unfortunately, it is
rapidly going down hill.  It barely responds to the left button, does
not move the pointer in the intended direction and tends to drift when
the mouse is moved at all.  The right button seems to work.  Should I
get a new mouse or can I get a new cable and fix it myself?  If I need
a new mouse can I get one direct from Atari or does some other
manufacturer make a better replacement?  I would appreciate any help.

     It isn't clear from your description whether the problem is the
mouse itself or the mouse port in your ST, but I suspect it is the
mouse.

     There are several better replacements available.  If you are
looking for a cheap solution, I'd start first by removing the screws
that hold your mouse together and popping off the top.  Remove the ball
also.  Make sure that the mouse is clean.  This means you'll need to
remove grime from the rollers which contact the ball, but you will also
need to examine the wheels (they connect to the roller shafts) for
dust.  If your mouse is in reasonably good shape, and just dirty, this
would solve any tracking problem.

     Now, on to the button response: when reassembling your mouse, make
sure that the plastic projections on the case's buttons set properly on
the internal buttons.  While the case is off, check to see if the
buttons produce a satisfying click.  You can also reinstall the ball
and reconnect the mouse while the case is off and test the buttons by
pressing on the internal buttons while giving a program that uses both
buttons a workout.  If the internal buttons work under these
conditions, the contact with the external buttons may be suspect.  I
did a little filing on plastic parts of the case on one mouse to
alleviate this problem and provide better contact between the internal
and external buttons.  If your internal buttons fail, you can replace
them with cheapo parts available from Best Electronics.

     Another likely problem is a short in your mouse cord near the
plug.  You can buy a new plug at Radio Shack, cut off the mouse below
the short, and replace the plug.

     I've fixed _lots_ and _lots_ of mice using these techniques.
However, sometimes a mouse is in too bad a shape and repair is just not
feasible.  In these cases, I usually replace 'em with a Witty mouse
($35) or a Best Mouse ($50), or an Atari replacement mouse ($35 plus
the return of the broken mouse), but there are other--and more
sophisticated alternatives.

     I've had a few other mouse problems, but the kids are really rough
on  mice, even when they are careful.  Sometimes irregular motion is
caused because an axel for one of the slotted wheels pops out of the
plastic clip that holds it in position.  We've had truly broken
buttons, too, which required replacement.

     If a mouse has never been cleaned and pointer motion becomes
irregular, dirty rollers are almost certainly the problem.  I was able
to permanently fix a balky mouse button by opening the rodent and
squirting some tuner cleaner into the switch.  After three years of
hard use, all my mouse problems so far have been dirt-related.

HARD DRIVE LOCKED   I am locked out of my hard drive due to an accessory

     Here's how you do it.

     1) Find your original hard drive utilities disk.  It should have
        your hard drive boot program in the AUTO folder.

     2) Put that disk in drive A:.

     3) Turn on your computer.  As soon as the floppy drive busy light
        comes on, hold down the Control, Left Shift, and Alternate
        keys.  Keep holding them down until your desktop comes up.

     4) If there is not already an icon installed for drive C:, install
        one by highlighting the Drive A: icon, then selecting "Install
        Disk Drive..." from the drop down menu.

     5) Delete the offending accessory from drive C:.

     6) Reboot your computer.

UPLOADING TEXT   By preparing your mail and Bulletin Board messages

time as well as money.  You can use your word processor or text editor
to create your messages off-line or even edit or create a message in
your capture buffer in your terminal program as in Flash.

     When using a word processor, you must save your message in ASCII
before uploading.  Be sure to set your left margin at "0" and your
right margin at "79", top and bottom margins should be at "0".  Be
sure to place returns after EACH line as GEnie does NOT have a word
wrap feature.  Turn your justification off before saving your file to
disk.

     If you captured some information on line to your buffer to
reupload, be sure the text you are uploading is not embedded with any
Control Codes.  Be sure to edit all characters you may have received
OUT of your text.

     Command Mode - When you receive this: Command?  Type TBATCH and
push return.  The system will respond with, "READY FOR INPUT."  Start
your Ascii text upload.  When the text file is completely uploaded, be
sure to send your BREAK CHARACTER.  See the SETTINGS.HLP file for further
information on this.  You will then see the line number prompt.  Type
*L to list your file incase you need or want to edit any part of your
file.  You can get a list of Editing commands by typing *H.  Be sure to
save your file by typing *S.

     Follow the same instructions when uploading text to the Bulletin
Board.  Just eliminate the address, carbon copy and subject line.

PROMPTED SEND   The second way to upload text is called PROMPTED SEND.

blocking your text off, start your letter with the normal TO:, Carbon
Copy:, and Subject: lines, or tell GEnie you want to reply in the
Bulletin Board by typing REP.  When the 1> prompt appears, start your
upload.  When the text file is finished uploading, be sure to type *L
to list the file incase you may need to edit any part of your text file
and *H if you need a list of editing commands.  When your file is
complete type *S to save the message or letter.

     Line noise can cause a problem when sending your text file.  If
you notice garbage within your text file, your best bet would be to log
off and log in again in hopes you will get a clearer line.  At times
line noise can be interpreted as a control character which will cause
GEnie to pause.  Press Control-Q to resume.  Then type *W to wipe out
all text.  This will remove all lines from the message or letter you
are sending.  You can now start your upload all over.

     There can also be a problem when reuploading text you have
captured.  Make sure that ALL line noise is edited out.

     Your exact upload procedure may vary from these instructions,
depending on your terminal program.  All examples here have been in
using Flash.  Be sure to read your terminal programs instructions.  If
you have any problems, please feel free to send mail to any of the

   o The screen text can be displayed in either of the ST screen fonts 
     or using any DEGAS format font.  Up to 10 fonts can be loaded at 
     one time allowing quick switching between fonts.  Five fonts are 
     included in the archive.

   o There is a forward and backward search capability.  The search can 
     be continued for the next occurrence of the desired string, or you 
     can return to the starting location once the search is completed.

   o The screen may be split into two windows to allow comparing 
     different sections of the same document.  The number of lines 
     displayed in each window can be changed.

   o Terminating the current document review process allows selection of 
     another document to view or exiting the program.

   o The GFA BASIC 3.0 source code is provided for those programmers 
     interested in how ST READER achieves its different operations.

"""""""""""""   is a good alternative to the ST desktop SHOW utility.
The search function is case sensitive and fast.  For a 1500 line file
the specified string was found almost instantaneously.  There is a
feature which will show where you are in the file at any time, i.e.
line 1323 of 1500.  (I always like to know how close I am getting to
the end of a long file.)  The print operation can be canceled once
started without quitting the program, and the text is highlighted as it
is printed allowing you to see how far along the print process is even
if you have a print spooler.

     I had the program crash several times while loading fonts, but
could not consistently duplicate the problem, and rebooting seemed to
prevent further occurrence.  I have been able to load text files
containing non-ASCII characters, even those from BBS sessions with line
noise which cannot be loaded into 1st Word Plus due to the non-ASCII
characters.  The message line sometimes disappears with these files,
but all operations seem to work fine, CTRL-C restores the message line.
There is no word wrap, so lines longer than 80 characters are cut off
with no way to view the remaining text.  Files containing lines longer
than 240 characters cannot be loaded.  This excludes files which are
long strings such as STWRITER files.

     A minor problem, but a major nuisance, is the program not setting
the screen colors.  Sometimes the text is shown in such poor contrast
it is unreadable.  The dialog boxes are always readable, but the text
may not be.  My fix has been to reboot with the default desktop colors
before running ST READER, which fixes the problem.

     Conversion from 1st Word format to ASCII does not eliminate the
1st Word headers, but using the BLOCK SAVE eliminates them quite
easily.  The conversion from ASCII to 1st Word format is the best I
have seen. 

     Selecting NO when asked to exit to GEM leaves you in nowhere land,
fortunately UNDO will allow you to select another file or exit to GEM
with YES.

     If you are tired of not being able to scroll the display and
search for desired text when viewing a file from the desktop and would
like to be able to save or print those key blocks of text for later
use, then this program is worth a close look.

childhood.  Air Warrior was great, but too expensive.  Battle Over 
Britian really fills the bill!  No phone bill, no $6/hr.  Of course,
none of that pleasant conversation you get from such chaps as Freefall,
et al.

     The first time I flew a Heinkel mission, I was AMAZED to see my
close escort criss-crossing through our formation.  So close, I could
see the exhaust ports.  Jeez, what a piece of art!  The crosses and
roundels are clearly visible, the only thing missing is the swastika on
the tail!  Bet they tried, though.

     Have already beaten England twice in campaigns, and saved it once.
Was hoping to get Winston Churchill's speech at the end, but they missed
their chance.

     My only complaints are that the game cheats sometimes when you are
playing Britain in the camp.  Popped up once to find the bombers behind
me, directly over the target.  Needless to say, the Hurricane Works got
wrecked that day...  Also the game gets really slow when things get hot
and heavy.  But with 14 planes on screen all blazing away at each
other, I understand why.  Almost makes me run out and get a 33mhz clone
to see what it looks like on that.

2400 BAUD, CHEAP!   Here's the story on the "no-name" CD-2400 modem

data terminal ready.  The newest model has eliminated the side panel
dipswitch options, which gave a hardware dipswitch for 3 of the 
functions which are software controllable.  The only hardware switch on
the device is the 1 cm x 2 cm rocker on/off power switch, which is
unfortunately located on the stage left side of the modem 12 cm from
the front, rather than on the front where the LEDs are.

     It comes with dc power supply and phone line cord (no RS232 cable)
and needs all 25 pin cable (not 9).  The ports on the back are for the
RS232 cable (with screw security), power source, and 2 RJ11C phone line
ports (to enable plugging in a phone).  Nothing on the gray-ivory
plastic case indicates who manufactures the modem for Computer Direct,
and the case closure seems to be snapped, and doesn't permit unscrew
access to internal inspection; there may be screws in the recessed
holes in the bottom for removal of the top half of the case, if so,
their heads are covered with plastic to prevent easy or undetectable
access.

     The 14 page manual (and 3 1/2 page installation guide) do not
describe automatic adaptive equalization or provide any numbers
regarding noise suppression qualities.

     Not a bad deal for $88. [Ad says mfr's suggested retail $350 (!)]
That's less than I paid for the Avatex 1200 (not the HC) a few years
ago.  Computer Direct will allow a return and complete refund (except
the shipping fees) within 30 days for no re-stocking fees.

     Now, the next question is...how well does it work with my phone
lines and my node at 2400?  Stay tuned to this channel.

GADGETS FOR LYNX   I just received my Lynx Kit Case from Atari
""""""""""""""""   yesterday.  This is a really nice case!  I already
owned a Sprokits case but believe me there is no comparison.

     Don't get me wrong.  Sprokits makes a very nice case but Atari's is
much nicer.  It's kind of a hard soft case, if that makes sense.  It
looks like a small brief case with a zippered lid and when you open it
there are pouches for 12 games on the inside of the lid.  There are
four compartments inside, one is Lynx size and three others are about
4" * 4".  The compartment dividers are padded and removable/recon-
figurable held in place with Velcro.  By removing the small dividers
you could easily put two Lynx's in there, you can also double up carts
in the pouches for a total of 24 in the lid.  I have my Lynx, 6 games,
A/C power adapter, Cig lighter adapter, spare set of Ni-Cad batteries,
earphones, com cable, pad of paper and pen (for remembering all those
codes) inside this case, and it all fits easily.  This case also has a
handle and removable shoulder strap, and the best part is that it sells
retail for only $19.95.

     I also bought their 9' cig lighter adapter for $19.95, a little
pricey but it has two power cables from one cigarette lighter.  I also
picked up their sun shade for $4.95, just a plastic shade for the
screen but it works, fits the machine well, and folds down to protect
the screen from scratches when not in use.

     Needless to say, I'm very happy with these items, particularly the
case.  In my opinion the case is a must have for any serious Lynxer.
These items should be available in stores soon.  I bought it directly
from Atari on their 800 order line.

     This short article is a sort of follow on to the last issue's "For 
Beginners Only" and "Words with the letter ""Z"" articles.

     If you have some experience with your communications program (i.e. 
know how to write a logon script, etc.) and would really like to squeeze 
your GEnie bills down to the lowest possible cost,  you can gain still 
more efficiency by writing macro programs to handle all of the routine 
tasks you normally do online.

     First, you do not want to do everything in one large script.  
Ideally you want at least two and possibly 3 or 4 depending on how you 
handle messages, etc.  If you go for two parts, you want at least one 
for scanning for messages, new files, and suchlike and one for actually 
retrieving them.

     Before writing them, you need to plan your attack.  Use your GEnie 
manual and back copies of this publication to obtain page numbers, item 
numbers and commands to draw out (on a piece of paper if necessary) 
exactly what you want to do.  Be sure that each script (or macro) ends 
either in a no charge area or automatically logs you off since you want 
to be out of the charge areas as fast as possible.  Next, as Mel 
Motogawa suggests, get and learn how to use Alan Hamilton's XYZ.TTP as 
you can save an immense amount of time using this program and it is 
easily driven from a macro.  (See GEnie Lamp 1.09.)

     When you are good and ready, turn your keystroke recorder on (most 
advanced communication programs have one), logon to Genie and go through 
your first script exactly.  Logoff, save the file and use it to write 
your script.  While I cannot tell you how to do this in FLASH (I don't 
have it), an example of this type of script can be found in the library 
under Download.lzh.  Finally, try to plan to debug it on an early 
saturday morning or some other non-prime time when GEnie isn't so busy 
so you can have a good response time.

     You will find that once you have a set of working debugged macro's, 
you will be able to get more out of the $charge areas of GEnie without 
spending major $ mainly because you will spend less time typing while 
the dollars add up.

     Are you trying to upload pre-written text into a message?  If so,
it's quite easy: Type *UPLOAD for the first line of the message and
GEnie will tell you to blast it on through.  Send the text through via
your terminal program's ASCII UPLOAD command then when it's all up
here, hit whatever key you have set up as BREAK.  (I have my ESC set to
send a BREAK.)   That's all there is to it.

     Okay... let's start from the top, so to speak.  The TOP will
display all the topics and their status for the category you're
currently attending whereas TOP ALL will do the same for -all- the
categories.  You'll have to look at the topic status for each one to
see if it's open/closed/marked/ignored.  INDex only shows the open/
closed status.  To un-mark a topic, just type UNM #.  You must SET to
each category in order to unmark topics in the same fashion you would
mark topics.

     It's important to remember that just because someone says they have
found a bug or caught a virus that things are sometimes not always as
they seem.  There is the possibility that they may be having a problem
with a conflicting desk accessory or auto-program or it could even be
hardware related and specific only to their set-up.

BOMBS AWAY   I have an older 1040ST which is having an annoying problem.
""""""""""   Some programs - like Phasar and MWC's msh will produce an
address error BOMB the first time that they are started after a boot
off of my hard drive.  Other programs will work fine.  Once the BOMB
has occurred I no longer have any problems with starting any program
until the next time I need to boot the hard drive.

     You may want to get rid of COPYFIX and see if this helps.  If it
does not, then try re-booting with all of your AUTO folder programs and
desk  accessories turned off (the best way to do this is rename them to
".PRX" and ".ACX", respectively) and add them back to your system one-
by-one until you can get the crash to happen again.

DC-OOPS!   Thanks for the patch program for DC DESKTOP 1.2 but HELP!
""""""""   All programs patched ok except DCCONFIG.PRG.  My original
unaltered DCCONFIG.PRG file is 16832 bytes long and not 16814 as you
note in the README file.

     A slight oversight on my part.  The checksum error occurs because
each DC Configurator has different config info stored in it...  <ooops>
I'll upload a new patch program which will alleviate this problem.

     In the mean time, the old DC Configurator will work just fine,
except that some key presses will not be recognized when assigning keys.

TOS 1.4: BAD IDEA?   Well, I must admit two things... one - I don't
""""""""""""""""""   have a hard drive, although I will be getting one
in about 2-3 weeks, and two - I've heard many bad things about TOS 1.4
and am curious about the File I/O...how is it faster?  I would think
that a hard disk alone would be fast enough!  I'm also worried about
the "incompatibilities" with software!  Any myths to dispell?

     There is very little "bad" about TOS 1.4.  A very small number of
problems with programs (mostly games) that broke the rules, often to
gain some special feature.

      Most of the other problems were:

      1.  Problems setting up Auto folders and accessories so everything
          worked.

      2.  Installation problems from trying to put 6 chip sets into
          some 2 chip machines.  Both 2 chip sets and 6 chip sets are
          now available so there is no reason to use the wrong one.
          Most of the time the substitution did not cause a problem,
          just occasionally.

     The speed increase varies depending on what you are doing.  Moving
and copying seem to work 50% to 200% faster.  Other functions seem to
improve from 10% up.  I have found nothing that seems to have slowed
down. From my own experience TOS 1.4 is more trouble free than 1.0 or
1.2 and I have had all three.

     You'll have better compatibility with programs developed for TOS
1.0 if you have TOS 1.4.  TOS 1.2 has more incompatibilities than TOS
1.4 may.

     An example:  Antic marketed a spreadsheet called A-Calc Prime.
Ran great on TOS 1.0 but locked the system up tighter than a drum under
TOS 1.2.  Now, with TOS 1.4, A-Calc Prime runs like a champ.

STACY FIX   I had the same kind of problem with my Stacy--screen going

isn't tight enough to hold it firmly connected and if the Stacy is laid
upside down (which I must have done in a plane's overhead compartment),
the vibrations pull the board loose. 

     I fixed it by opening up the Stacy (not for the weak) and putting
some foam padding above the board to keep it wedged tightly in place.
Everything's been fine since.

DOWNLOADING FILES   from the ST Roundtable can be an easy way to access
"""""""""""""""""   all sorts of utilities, programs, pics, games.
Also, there are many demos of powerful commercial programs that allow
you the option of checking them out before you buy them.  But most
everything except small text files and such are compressed to save you
time in downloading them.

     For years, all the files in the RT were arc'd, indicated by the
.ARC extender.  You used a version of arc.ttp to bring these back to
normal.  But in the last year, you've probably noticed more files
showing up with an .LZH extender.  If you've passed up downloading
these files thinking they're best left untouched, "why download it if I
don't know what it is?"  pop 'er into neutral for a minute and let's
discuss extracting files compressed in the .lzh format.


WHATS?.LZH   Files with an .lzh extender were compressed by one of the
""""""""""   Lharc compression programs available on the ST Roundtable.
It's become a popular format due to the smaller archives it creates
compared to arc.ttp.  Smaller archives mean less time is spent down-
loading them.  My Genie bill is usually shot by the end of the month
because I spend too much time yacking away.  But hey! Every minute
helps.

     A number of programs exist that allow you to do an extraction on
.lzh files.  They range from easy to use desk acc's to powerful
command-line driven .ttp programs.  IMHO, UNLZH.PRG by John Harris is
the closest thing to painlessly extracting files compressed by Lharc.
Unlzh has a lot of things going for it.  It's small in size, so it
loads fast.  Being GEM based, you just point-and-click to interact. If
you send the author a shareware donation, you get a desk acc version
for even greater convenience.  It has a host of useful functions,
particularly in the showing of text files within an archive.  And best
of it, it is *fast* at the extraction process compared to other lzh
programs, so you can start enjoying your newly downloaded programs.
Although it doesn't compress files, just extracts them, it is very good
at this.


ADDING.LZH   Personally, I enjoy using the programmable command-line
""""""""""   features of Hotwire 2.3, mating it to LHARC102.TTP, for my
Lharc needs.  (You can create your own custom shells for most any
program that accepts command line input via this neat feature of
Hotwire.)  It takes a little know-how to set up, (getting the Lharc
program's command line syntax right, basically) but then everything is
only a keypress away.  Extract, add, verbose - you name it and Hotwire
can wire it as long as it's in your Lharc program's language.  LHARC102
by Bill Shroka is the all-around Lharc program of choice for me due to
it's speed in compressing, over other Lharc programs I've tried, and
it's ability to compress folders.

     Keep one thing in mind.  Lharc doesn't rush itself when
compressing files, but when you note the file size after it's done,
you'll see it hasn't been twiddling it's thumbs all that extra time.
Compress a few file types you normally archive with both Arc and Lharc.
If you like the difference why not give Lharc a whirl?  I ended up
converting my entire library of files over to the .lzh format.  You can
find UNLZH and LHARC102 in the ST RT files section along with several
other Lharc utilities.


STOP THE PRESS!   There's also a newcomer to the extraction scene that
"""""""""""""""   looks like it will cause quite a stir.  Double Click
software has just released version 2 of their popular Double Click
Utilities and one of the utilities is appropriately named DC XTRACT
2.0.  A program that can be run as a program or desk acc., it offers
extracting _and_ compressing for the ARC, LZH, ZIP and ZOO formats!
(more z's)  If your telecom program allows desk acc's, what
possibilities.  You could download an archive from Genie in one of
these formats and then use DC Xtract, in acc.  form, to either extract
the files or read/print any docs within the archive.  Or perhaps rearc
it in your favorite format and then upload it to a local bbs.  And when
you're through, go ahead and download some more from GEnie.  All
without leaving your telecom program!  And best of all, it looks like
it will be very quick in getting about it's business.  More about this
program after I've had a chance to work with it fully.  A demo is
already residing in the ST RT files library.

     So, the next time you list all the new files in the ST Roundtable,
don't hesitate to download with impunity.
