However, the majority of information is still about the ST. Currently we have a 31% newshole and this issue includes an interview with Bill Sousa @ Insite Peripherals (makers of Floptical drives), info on several upcoming ST shows, a MIDI tutorial. We are constantly looking for news to put in future issues. If you or your organization has/will have any info to tell the public, put us on your mailing list. CompuCycle is also part of CompuNews. If you have any questions regarding it, feel free to post here. Here's a press release about CompuNews and how you can get it free: Please help us in saving our planet's resources by spreading this news release anywhere and everywhere. CompuNews currently has a 31% newshole and features an interview with Insite Peripheral's Bill Sousa and the Floptical Technology Association's Jim Milligan, PageMaker 5 news, info on Connect (a new online magazine), a piece on Microsoft, and a beginner's tutorial on MIDI. PMC's is also spearheading a massive campaign to educate and assist users in recycling in the computing environment. CompuNews (TM) is helping spread the word about this program dubbed CompuCycle (TM). The CompuCycle (TM) program encompasses computer books, software, and magazines. CompuCycle (TM) lets users buy, sell and trade their unwanted items for ones they do want. Trial testing of the CompuCycle (TM) program has been a success. All computers are supported including PC, Mac, Amiga, Atari ST and 8 bit, Apple, Commodore 64, CP/M, and others. Book topics include a wide range of subjects including programming and tutorials. CompuCycle (TM) has an inventory that includes over 10,500 computer books/magazines and 1,100 programs. Wherehouses are located in Washington and California for quick delivery. We believe that everyone can benefit from this program. Users will pay less for software and can turn unused programs and books into cash or wanted items. [EOA] [DSD]////////////////////////////// DSA SEEKS DEALER / ///////////////////////////////// For GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE D.MUNSIE [DSA], CAT 12, TOP 5, MSG:1/M475, Mar 19, 1993 Marketing Opportunity For Existing ST/Ste Developer/Company ----------------------------------------------------------- This message declares that DSA is formally seeking any ST/Ste active software company for discussions about marketing a new product. Due to on going programming projects and ideas we are seeking someone to represent our products commercially. The primary product for discussion is called the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE. This product is an arcade game development tool. It will allow even novice programmers to create fast action games in a fraction of time it would take using other methods. There have been several games developed as demos for the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE. Only a few of them have taken longer than 30-40 hours to produce. At this stage the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE is designed to work under GFA BASIC 3.5/3.6. It should be noted though that all of the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE low level routines are completely legal 68000 code. Thus converting the design shell to work under other languages should not impose a problem. As of this writing the following games have been designed using the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE. Please take the time to view them for examples of what this product can do. Please understand that all of the examples listed here were programmed in the duration of a 2-3 week period. KID_GP (January 1993 cover disk of ST REVIEW) EVADER (December 1992 cover disk of ST REVIEW) MRS_MUNCHIE Shareware-Reviewed in all major mags INSECTROID (March 1993 cover disk of ST FORMAT) MEGAPEDE Shareware-Reviewed in all major mags KID KONG & BUGS (April 1993 cover disk of ST-REVIEW) ST INVADERS (March 1993 cover disk of ST-REVIEW) MR CUD LEE Shareware DARK PEARL Public domain Most of these games can be found on-line here. We feel the above games represent a good variety of possibilities with the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE but none of the above games make full use of what the product is capable of. In other words they do not MAX out the capabilities. For instance using the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE in C or Assembly language should yield better results. As of this writing the only people that are LEGALLY allowed to produce any programs using the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE are: Dave Munsie 5601 Ammons Haltom City, TX 76117 Programmer: GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE Robert Dytmire 633 Pony farm Rd. Jacksonville, N.C. 28540 Beta tester,Programmer using the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE All of the bove games were written by one of the above programmers. There has been no other user testing or programming with the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE tools. If you have an existing software company that would like to expand into the area of games or programming tools please take the time to send a letter stating you would like to discuss this further. It should be noted that we are open to two areas of discussion regarding the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE. 1) The out right selling of the product. With all source codes and documentation. 2) Selling the exclusive rights to ONE company who will then be able to market it in any way they see fit. (End user, dealer, distributor, etc..) We have talked with a few companies already but we never commited ourselves to formally anouncing our intentions. This letter makes it formal. Any previous contacts made by other companies should be re-submitted for discussion. Thank you for your time. We look forward to hearing from any potential ST/Ste software company. Dave Munsie - Developer of the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE. p.s. Why don't we market this ourselves? Due to an overwhelming amount of programming projects we feel we would not be able to continue programming if we were involved with the marketing end of the GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE. We have over 6 products that will be ready within the next 4-6 weeks. Please send your letters and comments to: DSA Attn: GP_GRAPHICS ENGINE 5601 Ammons Haltom City, TX 76117 USA (817) 485-9293 10:00-5:00pm Central p.s.s. Please do not respond to this message on-line. If your serious about your inquiries please take the time to write or call. Thank you. This message can be freely duplicated as long as it is not modified in any fashion. Some people want it back fast, some want to save money and ship ground. I let you decide and recommend that you wait till you find out how much it will cost to ship before writing the check and closing up the box. Then, when you are at the post office, find out and add that amount and put the check inside and seal up the box for the fastest possible turnaround. All machines will be sent back in the same box in which they were received. Turnaround time - how long I have your computer depends on a number of things. First, I work on a first come first serve basis, and if you send me your machine when I already have others to work on, it waits until I finish the others. Second, some people have called me and told me they were sending me their computer, so I ordered the parts, and then the computer never showed, I was stuck holding $140 worth of chips until the next customer came along. So, now I will not order the chips until I receive your computer. I order them UPS Blue, and there are things I can be doing to the machine before the parts arrive so there is no significant delay. All memory upgrades are boardless, that is, NO UPGRADE BOARD IS REQUIRED. The total price you see up there includes everything, so I save you 90 bucks or more because you don't have to buy a ZRAM or JRI or whatever. The old chips will be removed from the motherboard and the new ones will be soldered into their places. The advantages of this are that sockets and clip-ons are subject to vibration and corrosion which causes crashing, and leaving the old chips in is a power drain. Also, it doesn't take any additional space, as boards do, so you won't have to leave your RF sheild off. If you already have the chips or insist on ordering them yourself, call me first. I will tell you the adjusted price. Also there are certain manufacturers whose memory chips I can't use, because the pins are too fragile. The only bad ones I have found so far are Siemens and Vitelic. I have come up with a method to put Blitter chips in older ST's and STacys, which have no spot on the motherboard for the socket. For those of you who have a Hercules color board or GenLocks, or those of you who just plain like speed, I advise you to get one. If you decide to get a Blitter and an Accelerator board installed in a pre-blitter machine at the same time, you save $15 on installation labor (both require the CPU to be socketed). These three words describe Spelling Sentry 1.20, Wintertree Software's latest upgrade to the popular spelling checker for Atari computers. Spelling Sentry is a spell-checking desk accessory. It watches keystrokes as you type into other GEM programs and accessories, and alerts you when you make a spelling error. Spelling Sentry can also check disk files and the GEM clipboard. Spelling Sentry includes a built-in abbreviation expander that can substitute a text string whenever you type its abbreviation. BIGGER ------ Wintertree has added over 11,000 words to Spelling Sentry's dictionary, bringing the total word count to over 115,000. At the same time, Wintertree reorganized the internal structure of the dictionary to make it both smaller and faster. The result: While the number of words in the dictionary increased by 10.5%, the size of the dictionary increased by only 6.2%. BETTER ------ Wintertree listened to requests and suggestions made by Spelling Sentry owners. Spelling Sentry 1.20 contains a host of new features and improvements: * 16 alternative words are now displayed instead of eight. * Spelling Sentry can now optionally locate alternative words that are phonetically similar to the misspelled word. For example, Spelling Sentry correctly suggests "Atari" in place of "Uhtarry." Spelling Sentry's original method of locating alternative words, based on typographical similarity, is still available. * You can now try a new spelling for a misspelled word, and Spelling Sentry will check it for correctness. * Spelling Sentry's abbreviation feature can now substitute the contents of a disk file wherever an abbreviation is used. * Spelling Sentry's new keyboard capture feature saves time when defining new abbreviations. The keyboard capture feature magically inserts the last few words you typed into the dialog field used to define abbreviations. Other improvements: * Screen flashing now works on all monitors * Improved compatibility with Calamus * Undo key now works reliably when checking disk files * Maximum size of an abbreviation expansion (including files and chaining) is now 1024 characters. (March 24) -- A leading designer of software for the Atari will presents his views about the "Desktops of the Future" in a seminar Monday, March 29 at the Silas Bronson Library, 267 Grand Street, Waterbury. The session, featuring Dan Wilga of Gribnif Software of Northampton, Mass., maker of NeoDesk, CardFile, Convector and other best-selling programs for the ST platform, will begin at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. The program, open to the public, is sponsored by ACT Atari Group, a network of seven computer clubs in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. There is no admission charge. Mr. Wilga will examine the evolution of Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) and their role in making personal computers more accessible to the average user. Wilga will explain how the Atari GUI differs from IBM's and Apple's, and what computer users can expect from the likes of Falcon's 3D Newdesk, voice activation, MultiTOS, and more. The educational seminar is part of a new series sponsored by ACT Atari Group. The Bridgeport, Conn.-based organization, which is the host of Connecticut AtariFest '93 (June 12-13) and a winter "swap meet" program, plans to hold quarterly sessions throughout the state. The Bronson Library is located in downtown Waterbury, just blocks from the junction of Route 8 and Interstate 84.
