SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL SHAREWARE AUTHORS
At EMS, people often ask us how they can start marketing their
software via the shareware industry. We have prepared this file
for this purpose. The accompanying file, GUIDE.DOC by Nelson
Ford and the Association of Shareware Professionals, will prove
very helpful as it covers every aspect of producing shareware.
Another valuable source is Jim Hood's $hareware Marketing $ystem,
a unique electronic magazine devoted to authors and distributors
of shareware. To see the authors' guide, just unzip GUIDE.ZIP and
view GUIDE.DOC with any text editor.
We can offer some advice in our capacity as a shareware distributor:
1) Indicate in which general catagory your program belongs. If
possible, you should get a catalog from the company to which you
are submitting to see how they organize. The less time a company
has to spend evaluating a product, the more likely it is to be
listed. Do NOT tell the distributor to "Run the program to see
what it does." It may go to the trash can immediately.
2) Provide descriptions of varying length. Common database
structures make the 250 character description very common, but
some companies may only be able to accomodate one line or want to
highlight your product and require lengthier descriptions.
3) Use 3.5" diskettes. They do not get damaged in the mail and
are more readily recycled.
