Readme file for the Windows NT Oct 92 Release of the ATI Graphics driver.
ATI Technologies Inc. November 13 1992.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 68800.SYS driver supplied here is for the Oct 92 Beta Release of
Windows NT operating system. It is required that the Windows NT operating
system is loaded onto the computer system.
The driver is in beta form and has been released with no implied warranties
and or guarantees of functionality. Any questions or problem reports should
be addressed to ATI Driver Development via the ATI forum on Compuserve.
This version of the driver will run on these ATI Products:
Graphics Ultra Pro with a 4 Megabyte aperture Enabled
Graphics Ultra + with a 4 Megabyte aperture Enabled.
The OEM versions identifying the Mach32 ASIC or 68800 ASIC with
a 4 Megabyte aperture Enabled.
This version does NOT currently support these ATI Products:
Graphics Ultra
Graphics Vantage
8514/Ultra
OEM versions identifying the Mach8 ASIC or 38800 ASIC.
A version supporting the other ATI graphics adapters and configurations is
under development and will be released before January 1993, subject to
unforeseen difficulties with Windows NT SDK and DDK updates.
Execute the Install.exe program on your Graphics Ultra Pro diskette to
determine if the aperture is enabled. For Graphics Ultra Pro adapters
plugged into the ISA bus, and the computer has 16 Megabytes of RAM, the
aperture cannot be enabled due to the memory addressing restrictions
of the ISA bus.
This ATI driver is a preliminary release developed by ATI programmers
since the release of the Windows NT DDK in October 1992. It has NOT
been through our QA process, nor optimized for speed as we wanted to get
a driver into out customer's possession ASAP, with the hopes that it will
be useful to you.
The programmers at ATI are working long hours to get basic drivers running
reliably, tell us if the driver fails to run, or there are MAJOR
bugs that prevent you from using the driver, and ATI will correct them.
ATI would like to know what applications you are executing so we can
do more effective testing in the future.
Submission of problems should be addressed by CompuServe @ 76004,3656
(GO ATITECH) or by FAX or Letter addressed to the attention of:

ATI believed support for our products was going to be included in the
October 92 SDK, however it did not make Microsoft's development schedule.
ATI is working with Microsoft to have support for ATI products included
in future releases of Windows NT SDK and DDK.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS -----------------------------------------
Windows NT operating system assumed to be installed in C:\WINNT.
Graphics Ultra Pro software utilities (shipped with the video card),
assumed to be already installed.
This ATI driver package containing:
- 68800.SYS (Graphics Ultra Pro driver)
- ANTPANEL.EXE (Configuration program for the driver)
- INPORT.SYS (Bus Mouse driver for Graphics Ultra Pro)
- FRAMEBUF.DLL Port driver
- This README file
Procedure:
1. Copy the 68800.SYS driver to the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\DRIVERS directory.
Copy the FRAMEBUF.DLL driver to the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM directory.
2. Copy the Windows NT ANTPANEL.EXE configuration program to a directory
which is contained in your Windows NT PATH environment variable.
3. If your Graphics Ultra Pro card does not include a mouse port
or if you are using a pointing device not connected to the ATI adapter,
proceed to step 5.
4. In the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\DRIVERS directory, rename INPORT.SYS to INPORT.SAV.
Copy the new INPORT.SYS mouse driver to the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM\DRIVERS
directory.
Windows NT supports an INPORT mouse. The Graphics Ultra Pro may
contain a Bus mouse, so this is a Bus mouse driver for Windows NT.
5. From MS-DOS operating system, use the INSTALL.EXE program to verify
the "Memory Aperture" is enabled, and if the Mouse is Enabled.
6. Power off the computer, power on, and start Windows NT.
Windows NT will start up in 640x480, 16 colour VGA mode. This is normal.
7. From the Program Manager, run ANTPANEL.EXE. Select the resolution and
colour depth you want to use, then click on the "OK" button. Your
selections will take effect after you shut down and restart Windows NT.
Revision History -----------------------------------------
Version 0.03 New Features for resolution and color depth (if capable)
640 by 480 in 8 and 16 bits per pixel
800 by 600 in 8 and 16 bits per pixel
1024 by 768 in 8 and 16 bits per pixel
1280 by 1024 in 8 bits per pixel
where 8 bpp is 256 colors,
16 bpp is 65535 colors
24 bpp is 16.7 million colors
Version 0.02 Fixes
WRONG COLORS -- Adapters using the ATI 68830 DAC will now display a
correct palette.
KNOWN PROBLEMS -----------------------------------------
-- Mouse does not move in Windows NT. If the mouse is connected to the
ATI graphics adapter, then these problems may be at fault.
The mouse driver expects mouse setup to use IRQ 5 and primary address.
Use the Windows NT Setup program to verify an Inport mouse is selected.
If it is NOT, login as the administrator and select Inport mouse.
Sometimes (debugger enabled) -- Because the Bus mouse interrupt is
always enabled, during Windows NT startup (blue text screen visible)
an Unexpected IRQL error occurs.
To work around this, disable the mouse interrupt temporarily by :
Boot MS-DOS
run debug
o23E 10
q
Boot Windows NT
