This is a pure adrenaline pumping racing game with no silly characters, power-ups or spoilers to get in the way of the action. You don't even have to prefer motorcycles to get your kicks because, apart from the graphics, there's nothing in the gameplay to distinguish this from most car racing games. Super Burnout can be played against the clock on an empty track, or against six computer-controlled opponents, or head to head against a friend in split screen mode. Each player can select from six custom bikes which offer different levels of grip, acceleration and maximum speed and although there's no mention of authenticity with bikes named Sliding Thunder, Lightning Racer, Wheels of Terror, Reflex, Killing Turtle and Super Rabbit it's safe to assume Yamaha and Honda have spent their sponsorship money elsewhere. Transmission can be automatic which makes it easy to follow the racing line flat out with momentary lifts on tight corners or manual where gear changes are performed by pressing the clutch (C Button) along with the up/down buttons on the joypad. The enhanced Jaguar controller is supported and enables fingertip shifting control using the left/right joypad buttons - quite why this can't also be implemented on the standard controller is beyond me. There are eight track layouts "from around the world" and although there's no mention of them being the authentic layouts for Japan, Hungary, Germany, France, Canada, Brazil, Australia and America they do provide a variety of challenges. When you're ready for Championship mode you race against six opponents on all eight tracks during which your start position for the next race depends on your finish position in the previous race. The trick is to punch the accelerator at exactly the right moment to slip past your opponents then follow the racing line (the darker area of track) which makes you harder to overtake. The on-screen graphics are well up to 1995 standard with individual control over the volume of the sound FX, voice FX and music level. Given the choice between 14 AOR (Eric Clapton style) music tracks or whacking up the sound FX volume I opted for the latter! The game settings, high scores, joypad configurations and sound settings are stored in the cartridge even with the power off. ** Boxout ** Super Burnout Supplied by: The Console Centre Halifax Road, Birchencliffe, Huddersfield, HD3 3BS Tel/Fax: 01484 544926 Email: morgan.magee@cableol.co.uk Requires: Jaguar console Pros: Plan of track and throttle on-screen helpful, bike selection makes it easy for both beginners and experts alike to get something out of the game.
