** Maggie pages review / 215 words ** Illness 80% Entertainment (Demo) Falcon only, 4Mb, RGB required Author: Escape ** ESC.JPG here This demo was released at the Polish Quast Party last August where it was a distinctive entry in a very packed competition. Escape always have had a reputation for doing their own thing which they established at the 1997 Siliconvention with their enigmatically swirly Sili-con-Carne demo. This latest release confirms their idiosyncratic approach to "design". Conventional demos take a soundtrack and lead a parade of effects down it. Some very good demos synchronise the changeover and progression of effects in time with the music. A very select few are able to create a "mood" with an adept combination of the audio and visual parts, fusing the separate pieces to make a "whole" greater than the sum of the individual parts - "Illness" does exactly this! The execution of this demo is slick. There is no overt technical wizardry, of the sort found in Sonoluminescenz, no fancy logos or texture-mapped 3D, indeed, without the soundtrack, it would be very hard to tell just what is going on with the "Jackson Pollock on a high" inspired visuals. Somehow the cleverly blended and mood-optimised soundtrack grabs you, and you'll keep coming back for more. ** italics ** Chris Holland ** /italics **
