Quick start ADDRESS manual
An easy to use GEM based Address manager for all TOS based computers

ADDRESS is Shareware
--------------------
This means you may test ADDRESS before you buy the to decide whether it
meets your needs. Unregistered versions can manage up to 40 addresses. On
registering your copy a user key removes this limit which is then only
limited by the available memory. So far a test database is up and running
with over 18000 addresses running on a TT with 4Mb.
Registered users also receive comprehensive on-line help in ST-Guide
format which includes the ability to printout help pages if required.
Distribution
------------
The Unregistered version of ADDRESS can be freely copied and distributed
via BBSs and Mailboxes but may NOT be distributed by PD libraries,
Magazine Cover disks, Magazine subscriber disks or CD-ROM collections
without my prior written permission. So far the following libraries have
permission to distribute ADDRESS:

Important!
----------
If you're using a registered copy of ADDRESS be sure to delete ADDRESS.INF
and other *.INF files before passing copies on to other users.
UK support and registration
---------------------------
UK users can take register locally using Joe Connor's supported Shareware
scheme. The Shareware fee is set to cover the stationary, media and
postage costs incurred in mailing out master disks.
Refer to SUPPORT.TXT for more details.
General
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADDRESS is designed to manage names and addresses. ADDRESS runs as either
an application APP or accessory ACC and is programmed in GEM for maximum
compatibility.
ADDRESS has been tested on Atari TT030 with TOS 3.06 and MultiTOS 1.08
Beta and also on a Falcon 030 with TOS 4.04 and using the Tkr and SANG
Graphic cards.
Installation
------------
Simply copy all files into a folder reserved for Address on your hard
disk. To run ADDRESS as an accessory, rename ADDRESS.APP to ADDRESS.ACC
and copy it to your Boot drive or partition (usually C). ADDRESS can also
be run from floppy disk if desired.
ADDRESS List window
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
On starting ADDRESS the Address list window is displayed. The Icons down
the left hand side have the following meanings, from top to bottom:
Icon 1: Load [Control]+O
------------------------
Select this icon to load address data files, alternatively use the 'Load'
drop down menu option from the 'File' menu.
Icon 2: Save [Control]+S
------------------------
Select this icon to save address data files, alternatively use the 'Save'
drop down menu option from the 'File' menu.
Because it's easy to load and save address files most users tend to store
several seperate files, eg one file for personal contacts, another for
business contacts etc.
Icon 3: Clipboard [Alternate]+K
-------------------------------
Selecting this icon displays a dialog with the following options:
Selected: Selected (highlighted) records are copied to the Clipboard
All: All listed records are copied to the Clipboard
Cancel: The operation is cancelled, no action is taken
Address supports the Atari Clipboard. If no clipboard exists one will be
created on drive 'A' if running from floppy or partition 'C' if running
from hard disk.
Icon 4: Editor [Control]+E
--------------------------
Select this icon to open the address editor. The first selected address in
the list is automatically loaded into the editor.
Icon 5: Import/export [Alternate]+X
-----------------------------------
Select the two arrows icon to open the Import/Export dialog. Using this
dialog address lists can be formatted and imported/exported in many
different pre-defined database formats. Refer to 'File import/export' for
more details.
Icon 6: Select
--------------
These three small adjacent symbols are used to select records.
Left icon: [Alternate]+T
------------------------
A single click on this icon displays a 'Select by Class' pop-up menu.
Select the desired class to highlight matching entries in the address
list.
Middle icon: [Control]+[Shift]+T
----------------------------------
A single click on this icon displays a 'Select by Status' pop-up menu.
Select the desired status to highlight matching entries in the address
list. A double click on the symbol opens a dialog where the status labels
can be configured.
Right icon: [Alternate]+U
-------------------------
De-selects all records in the list.
Icon 7: Dial number [Alternate]+W
---------------------------------
Select this icon to display a popup from which any active telephone
numbers can be selected and dialled without opening the 'Edit' window.
Icon 8: Sort list [Alternate]+[Shift]+S
---------------------------------------
Select the folders icon to display the sort dialog which offers the
following options:
Sort by: Up to three search criteria can be activated and a sort proceeds
as follows: The list is sorted according to the first selected field. If
more than one record is found these records are sorted again using the
second selected field. If there are still more than one matching record
these records are sorted a final time using the third selected field.
Forwards (increasing): Records are sorted in alphabetical order.
Backwards (decreasing): Records are sorted in reverse alphabetical order.
Birthday, omit year: Select this option to sort birthdays without taking
into account peoples ages. De-select this option if you want to take the
year of birth into account during a sort.
Icon 9: Print [Control]+P
-------------------------
Output an address list. A dialog box appears offering the following
options:
Print: If no records are highlighted the entire address list is output.
File: If no records are highlighted the entire address list is saved. The
file selector appears ready to enter the desired filename.
Abort/Cancel: Output is cancelled and the address list dialog is topped.
Address uses 1st-Word compatible printer drivers which provides access to
a wide range of printer drivers, refer to on-line help for more details.
Icon 10: Wastebasket [Control]+D
--------------------------------
This icon is used to delete any highlighted records. Unless 'Warnings' is
de-selected in the 'Configuration' dialog, a dialog appears offering a
last chance to change your mind.
Find
----
This area is used to isolate a specific group of records. Select a field
in the pop-up menu to search a specific field or select the 'All fields'
option for a wider search.
Often typing the first few characters you think are in the record you're
searching for will be enough to isolate the desired record and highlight
it ready for selection.
In word: If this option is de-selected ADDRESS only tries to match the
search string from the start of each record (NOT each word). De-select
this option to search for matches inside each record.
The buttons along the bottom of the window have the following meaning:
Next: The next record containing a matching string is searched for and
highlighted if found.
All: All matching records are highlighted.
OK: Select this option to open the address editor and display the first
highlighted record.
Abort: The ADDRESS list window is closed.
Drag&drop support
-----------------
Internal options: In the address list records can be drag & dropped onto
the 'Edit' window and other icons.
General options: Under a multitasking Operating System addresses can be
dragged from the address list onto windows of other applications, which
support this feature.

ADDRESS editor window
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Icons down the left hand side have the following meanings, from top to
bottom:
Icon 1: To address list [Control]+N
-----------------------------------
The displayed record is merged/sorted into the address list.
Icon 2: Address list [Control]+A
--------------------------------
The address list window is topped.
Icon 3: Search using mask [Control]+F
-------------------------------------
Searches for matching data in other records. Click on 'New' to open an
empty record and fill in any fields you wish to search for then click on
the icon. ADDRESS uses the record as a search mask and displays the first
record which matches the fields you entered. Continue clicking to display
other matching records, if any. To re-display the mask for another try or
to delete it hold down the [Alternate] key and select the icon.
Icon 4: Duplicate record [Alternate]+C
--------------------------------------
Duplicates the current record which appears in the 'List' window.
Icon 5: Dialler [Alternate]+W
-----------------------------
Dials the selected telephone number in the current record via the serial
port and attached modem.
Icon 6: Clipboard [Alternate]+K
-------------------------------
Selecting this icon copies the current record to the Clipboard
Address supports the Atari Clipboard. If no clipboard exists one will be
created on drive 'A' if running from floppy or partition 'C' if running
from hard disk.
Icon 7: Print [Control]+P
-------------------------
Outputs the current record using the current export format. It's a good
idea to check the output before committing to hard copy using the 'Report'
option.
Icon 8: Wastebasket [Control]+D
-------------------------------
Delete the displayed record. Unless 'Warnings' is active in the
'Configuration' dialog, a dialog appears offering a last chance to change
your mind.
File import/export
------------------
Using this powerful option nearly any ASCII format data file from another
application can be processed for use in ADDRESS and ADDRESS can export its
address list data in any format for use by other applications. Examples:
1) Conversion of existing name and address databases for use in ADDRESS.
2) Export of address list data to generate form letters.
3) Preparation of a group file for QFax other similar application.
The import/export format from ADDRESS can also be accessed via an XAcc
link and via the GEM Clipboard. Some examples are contained in the
'Formats' folder. For more details refer to the on-line help available to
registered users.
XAcc windows
------------
The XAcc protocol offers a convienient method of exchanging data between
Accessories and programs. ADDRESS can send to any program, which supports
the XAcc protocol, addresses which are then inserted by the program into
the text. COMPO's That's Write, for example, supports the XAcc protocol.

In this dialog a 1st Word compatible printer driver can be loaded.

Programming details for ADDRESS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADDRESS was compiled using Pure C, which was prepared using the Interface
Resource construction set and bound directly into the program.
The Alerts and pop-up menu code originate from Olaf Meisiek's Mydials.
The colour icons are also created using Interface. For the monochrome
version I used C_RSC by Holger Weets, this program (in contrast to
Interface!) generates optimised Sorce code which means that icons used
more than once are only contained once not once for each usage!
