TeX ist a professional book printing system. It was designed to give you
maximum output quality. Mathematical formulas and complicated tables
can easily be integrated into the text.

CS-TeX 4.0 (which is based upon TeX 3.141 and MetaFont 2.7) is one of the
successors of the Public Domain AtariTeX 2.00/2.10. (The other one is
MultiTeX 5.0; see the docs for more details.) Besides bug fixes and
support for new printer models the main difference is the extension of
the graphics features (CSG level 2) and a substantial speed increase in
some of the graphics functions.

CS-TeX 4.0 is not (!!!) in the public domain, but it is freeware.
So you may copy and distribute it only if you take absolutely no
money for this sevice. It is especially not allowed do distribute
this disk via commercial public domain sevices.

You will need at least 1 MB of free RAM. You must have a hard disk.
For test purpose only you may use a 3 MB RAM disk as a substitute for
the hard disk. The system is too big to get installed on floppy disks.

Performing an update needs the old system to be deleted completely first.
(Of course you need not delete your own input files. You can also use
the old PK fonts.)

Contents
========

The CS-TeX 4.00 as of May 1992 consists of the following 8 disks:

- Disk CS-TeX 1/8 contains:
  -> README       --  This file.
  -> INFO         --  German translation of `README'.
  -> INSTALL.PRG  --  Installation program.
  -> TEX314.LZH   --  Archive including TEX.TTP et alia,
  -> more archives. These are all needed for working with TeX. You must
                      install all of them.

- Disk CS-TeX 2/8 contains:
  -> BIBTEX.LZH and other archives. You may omit installing these in case
                      you're in lack of hard disk space.

- Disk CS-TeX 3/8 contains:
  -> SCREEN.LZH -- The screen previewer. You will need this in any case.
  -> LASER.LZH -- Printer drivers for laser printers and HP DeskJet. If
                      you have one of these printers you must install the
                      corresponding driver.
  -> OTHER.LZH    --  Printer driver for 9-,  24-, and 48-pin printers. If
                      you have one of these printers you must install the
                      corresponding driver. This archives also contains the
                      driver that `prints' into a GEM IMG file.
  -> BILDER.LZH -- Documentation and demo of the CS-TeX graphics
                      capabilities.

  -> MDISKxxx.LZH -- A very nice copy program especially for copies
                      floppy <--> hard disk. This program is independent
                      and not part of the TeX-System.

- Disk CS-TeX 4/8 contains:
  -> BIGTEX.LZH   --  Two BigTeX-Versions: `Large' for 2 MB RAM and
                      `Huge' for 4 MB RAM, plus documentation.
                      You can use this versions only if you have that much RAM.
                      All normal TeX texts and all the docs and demos found
                      in this package will work well with the normal version.
  -> M_EMACS.LZH -- a text editor (some old MicroEMACS); you will need it
                      only if you still don't have a text editor.

  -> XEDIT170     --  Add-on: GEM-Texteditor xEdit 1.70 by Alexander Gr”pl.
                      This program is not part of the TeX package. Please
                      see the it's docs for the copyright notice (ShareWare).

- Disk CS-TeX 5/8 contains:
  -> MF27.LZH     --  MetaFont, the font-generator for TeX.
  -> MF-UTIL.LZH -- Utility programs to support MetaFont.

- Disk CS-TeX 6/8 contains:
  -> INPUTS_1.LZH -- Input files that MetaFont will need.
  -> INPUTS_2.LZH -- Input files that MetaFont will need.
  -> WASY.LZH -- Funny symbol character set (telephone etc.)

- Disk CS-TeX 7/8 contains:
  -> FONTS.LZH -- Fonts for the screen previewer
  -> P6_FONTS.LZH --  Fonts for 24-pin printers.
  -> P6_HDMIN.LZH --  Mini-font-set for 24-pin printers in high resolution.
  -> FX_MINI.LZH  --  Mini-font-set for 9-pin printers.

- Disk CS-TeX 8/8 contains:
  -> LJ_FONTS.LZH --  Fonts fo laser printers.
  -> BJ_MINI.LZH  --  Mini-font-set for CANON BJ-130.

All of th disks can be installed with INSTALL.PRG. Normally you should
install the whole system on a single partition but the MetaFont part
(disks 5 and 6) may go onto a separate partition. The rest should be
kept together.

>>
>> WARNING: The LZH archives were changed from -lh1- with UNIX-style filenames
>>          to -lh5- with MSDOS-style filenames. I don't know any LHarc
>> version that can handle both. On disk 2 you will find two
>> LHarc-versions; just in case you want to manipulate the
>>          archives by hand.
>>
>> INSTALL.PRG version 2.0 (and up) can (of course) handle both types.
>> So you don't need LHarc to install the TeX system.

Since all of the fonts can easily be generated with MetaFont I have included
only a small subset for the start. You will have to generate the rest as
you need it.

Generating the normal font set from 'KLEIN.FTS' will take you about 12 hours
for one device on a normal ST.

The old fonts (up to March 1990) were partly generated with different
parameters and old buggy MF input files. Please don't use them any more.

Before you install
==================

Before installing the TeX system please check the following points:

1. The AUTO folder of your boot disk should contain FOLDR050.PRG. This does
   not only apply to the old TOS versions but also to TOS 1.4 and 1.6 !
   If the program is missing, copy it into the AUTO folder and re-boot.

2. If you have at least TOS 1.4 (Copyright message: year 1989 or later),
   you should also put CACHE010.PRG into the AUTO folder as this will
   improve the speed. If your TOS is older than 1.4, then do *not* use
   CACHE010.PRG !!!

3. make a backup of your TeX work and then completely delete the old TeX
   and MetaFont. Old here means all versions that did not come with
   INSTALL.PRG.

   It is important not to mix parts of the two systems because some parts
   don't work together correctly. Your TeX files however will of course
   work with the new systems. You need not change them. Additional info
   may be found in 'update.txt' which installs itself in the folder
   TEX_DOC.

Please delete the old system first before you install the new one.
And don't mix the two.

Installation
============

In order to install CS-TeX you need 5 - 10 MegaByte free space on one
partition of your hard disk. If you want to install MetaFont too, you will
need 3 more MegaBytes.

These sizes hold for a 'normal' system. If you want to keep lots of
fonts in lots of magnifications on your hard disk, you may well need
much more space.

If you don't have the TOS 1.4 of 1989 (or a later TOS version) and AHDI 3.0
or a compatible hard disk driver, TOS will crash on partitions bigger than
15 MegaBytes.

INSTALL.PRG makes the installation very easy:
- If you have enough space you may install the complete system. After starting
  INSTALL.PRG just click on 'install' once for every one of the 8 disks.
- If you don't have too much space you may reduce the installation to
  the disks 1, 3, 7, and (if you own a laser printer or HP DeskJet) 8.

If the installation produces error messages like '*** Read error ***',
'*** CRC error ***', '*** Corrupt archive ***', '*** Corrupt file size ***',
or similar then you have a defect copy of the system which you should not
use. Get a new copy of the disks.

'*** Write error ***' or '*** File create error ***' will appear when
your disk is full or write protected.

Starting TeX
============

After having installed everything start CTEX_E.PRG (this is the english
version of CTEX.PRG), select your favourite text editor under `Find::editor'
and save the parameters. You are now ready to process the pre-selected file
'CS_TEX.TEX' which ist the documentation for the system. (Time to learn
the german language now.) The table of contents will appear after the second
TeX run.

Before printing you have to select the printer driver and parameters.
You will find a list of printers and corrosponding drivers in the file
`\TEX\TEX_DOC\DVI_INFO' and in `DVI_DOC.DVI'.

Additional information is included in source form on the disks. You may
`TeX' it and the read it using the previewer or print it after you selected
the correct printer driver. It's wise to read the entire documentation at
least once. After reading `CS_TEX.TEX' you should then read `DVI_DOC.DVI'
and then the rest.

No warranty
===========

The CS-TeX package ist well tested and I use it every day without
problems. But since there always is `one more bug' I must tell you the
following:

CAUTION. There is no whatsoever warranty for this software. I will not be
responsible for any damage it may cause. Use it completely at your own risk.

Copyright
=========

This package is `Freeware' in the following sense:

I am holding the Copyright and will allow the use and copying of the software
only under the following conditions:

1. You must not take money for copying the package. Commercial Public Domain
   distributors are *not* allowed to distribute this package. Only exception:
   DANTE e.V. (in Heidelberg, Germany) is allowed to distribute the disks for
   a nominal fee to cover the disk price.
2. You are not allowed to distribute modified copies of this software.
   You are only allowed to copy these disks as they are. You are not
   allowed, e.g. to distribute installed versions. Please distribute only the
   original installable disks. So everyone gets the chance to receive a
   working system.
3. The package may only be copied together with the complete and unmodified
   documentation. (You may translate the german docs into some other tongue
   and distribute this on a separate disk. If someone has translated it
   into english please let me know.)
