CBeat is a small desk accessory, designed to work alongside your sequencer software, that is incredibly handy. When adding an effect to a piece of music, you often need to know the length of a musical note (crotchet, semiquaver etc.) so you can match the effect unit's delay time (often measured in milliseconds, a thousandth of a second) to the tempo of the music. This is what CBeat calculates. Given the Beats Per Minute (BPM), CBeat will calculate the length of various useful notes. Indispensable... 3. System Requirements ---------------------- CBeat will run on any ST compatible computer, including the STe, TT, Mega series, and the Falcon. The video display must be in an 80-column mode (i.e. any resolution from 640 * 200). This includes ST Medium, ST High, and most Falcon resolutions. CBEAT.ACC must be placed in the root directory of your boot drive (usually A: or C:). 4. Operation ------------ 4a. In use Include CBEAT.ACC, CBEAT.RSC and/or CBEATMED.RSC on your boot drive. If you are running in medium resolution, CBeat will use CBEATMED.RSC, but if you are running in high resolution (640 * 400 or more), then CBeat will use CBEAT.RSC. If you use both resolutions, simply copy both CBEAT.RSC and CBEATMED.RSC onto the boot drive, and CBeat will automatically load the correct file. When this is done, on booting the machine, the CBeat entry will be found under the Desk menu of any GEM program. Click on this to activate the dialogue box. Simply enter the BPM, click on Calculate (or press Return). The values of the notes will appear next to the relevant note lengths. CBeat works out the length, in milliseconds, of the following notes: Value | Name | Note --------------------------------------------------------- 1/1 | Whole | Semibreve 1/2 | Half | Minim 1/4 | Quarter | Crotchet 1/8 | Eighth | Quaver 1/16 | Sixteenth | Semiquaver 1/32 | Thirtysecond | Demisemiquaver 1/3 | Half triplet | Minim triplet 1/6 | Quarter triplet | Crotchet triplet 1/12 | Eighth triplet | Quaver triplet 1/24 | Sixteenth triplet | Semiquaver triplet 1/48 | Thirtysecond triplet | Demisemiquaver triplet When you have finished with CBeat, simply click on Quit. 4b. Errors CBeat has five error messages, three of them fatal. Invalid BPM Entry Your entry should consist only of numbers and a decimal point. That's Too Fast !! CBeat only allows BPM values up to a ridiculously fast 499,999 BPM. BPM Too Small Similarly, CBeat only allows BPM values down to a ridiculously low 24.001 BPM. CBEAT.RSC Not Found! The high resolution resource file was not found on your boot drive. CBeat will not operate in these circumstances. CBEATMED.RSC Not Found! The medium resolution resource file was not found on your boot drive, and you are in a medium resolution mode. C-Beat will NOT Operate! Due to GEM error or no .RSC file 5.
