Being an avid programmer, I am always on the lookout for void areas in 
the computer world. And also being a constant user, I tend to simplify
things almost to the point of being ridiculus. I have both an Atari Mega ST4
and a Sunnyvale Memories 20mhz 80386, which means that I see the best of
both worlds (the vast amount of business oriented software for the IBM, and
the huge impressive amount of graphics oriented software for the ST series
of computers.)
     Now, I am not going to tell you which is the better computer, but I will
say that the Atari far surpasses the IBM in the graphics areas (and ease of
programming graphics). And I would like to see more support for GEM on the
IBM. Anyway, enough politics...

In this arc file you will find several files of interest listed as follows:

LASERJET.EXE   The IBM executable version of this program
LASERJET.PRG   The Atari ST executable version of this program
LASERJET.DAT   The [optional] data file for this program

          The following files are LaserJet softfonts

CHAN12.SFP
HEL8.SFP
ROC12.SFP
ROM10.SFL
README.TXT     This file (I hope you figured this one out)

How it works:

  (IF THE LASERJET.DAT FILE DOES NOT EXIST THE PROGRAM WILL RUN AS FOLLOWS)

     Run the executable program (on the proper computer). Follow the prompts
and you will have no problems. You can't hurt your computer or printer with
this program (I do not accept any liability!). The program will show you the
title screen, and then present you with a disk directory. You will pick out
the name of the font to download, type it in and then answer a few more
questions about what you want to do.

  (IF THE LASERJET.DAT FILE DOES EXIST, THE PROGRAM WILL ACT LIKE THIS)

  If laserjet does find it's .dat file (must be in the same directory as the
executable program), it will read it and automatically download each file
without asking any questions. It makes each one permanent, but not the
primary font.

In both cases, the laserjet program looks at the extender on the font name
(ex. ROM10.SFP) and decides if the font is landscape or portrait based on the
last letter (which is normally a 'P' or an 'L'). It downloads the font according
to this condition.

THE LASERJET.DAT FILE IS SETUP AS FOLLOWS:
simply type the name (if its in the same directory as the laserjet program
or type the drive\directory\fi\fontname.ext if the font is in another
directory or drive. The last line in the LASERJET.DAT file MUST BE the word
END, it looks for this word and will not work as smoothly as it should if
you mit the "END" statement.

I know that there are many similar programs on the IBM, but none I have seen
are quite as simple (in the automatic mode) and most won't allow a sample
printing of the entire softfont as this will. I know of only one other
softfont downloader for tha Atari ST and it stinks (sorry, but I can express
an opinion just as anyone else can). I hope you enjoy this program, and I
intend to write a full blown font-editor for both computers (if this program
generates any interest at all). The IBM people just don't know what they're
missing and the Atari people just don't know what they are missing! (How's
that for a middle of the fence position).

As I will be suprised if you have read this far, it will suprise me even more
if I get any contributions via shareware but I am always hopeful.
