-- The DOS Server --
The install of the DOS Server consists of 4 major parts.
1 The install of share.exe
2 The install of the Windows Network Client on you DOS machine
3 The install of the TCP/IP protocol on your DOS machine
4 The install of the Windows Netwerk Server on your DOS machine
I presume that you:
have at least DOS 7 or 8 installed.
have a working windows TCP/IP network.
have knoweledge about TCP/IP.
have the driver disk of your network card at hand
have downloaded the following files:
**Part 1**
In this part we will install share.exe. Since windows98/2000 doesn't have share.exe anymore we have to use the version from DOS 6.22
- Unzip share.zip to your c:\windows\command
- Change your config.sys to include the line 'device=c:\windows\setver.exe'
- Change your autoexec.bat to include the line 'c:\windows\command\share.exe'
- Reboot
- Type from command prompt 'setver share.exe 6.22'
- Reboot
**Part 2**
Here we will install the Windows Networking Client.
- Copy dsk3-1.exe and dsk3-2.exe to a temp dir and execute them.
A lot of files will be extracted. At some point he will ask you if it's okay to overwrite some files. Answer Yes.
- Change your dir to your workdir and start setup.exe
- Enter for client setup and choose your directory (standard=c:\net)
- You will then be asked to choose a network adapter from a list. Select [Network adapter not shown on list below]
- He will ask for a directory. This has to be the dir where you keep your network card drivers(oemsetup.inf)
- You will get to a list where you can choose the available card. Select the right one. Duh!
- Press enter for best memory performance
- Now you have to decide about a username. Choose anything you like as long as you can remember it.
- The main install is now done. By now you will see a screen with options.
- If you got a NT server you have to
- Change Setup Options
- Change Logon Validation => Logon to domain
- Almost done. Just a few changes
- Change Names
- User name is your username for the network
- Computername is the name of your DOS Server
- Workgroupname needs to be the same as the workgroup mentioned in your windows network configuration
- Domainnaam has to match the workgroupname
- Listed options are correct en enter
- After copying some more files he will want to reboot. Make it so.
- If your made any mistakes in the setting you can restart the setup from the directory you specified earlier (eg c:\net)
**Part 3**
Here we will install TCP/IP so you can communicate with your windows network.
- Go to you temp directory and execute the file tcp32b.exe
- Start the setup and go to Change network configuration
- Remove the NWlink IPX Protocol (use tab to switch between screens)
- You have to select at least 1 protocol. Choose Microsoft TCP/IP
- Add another protocol, Microsoft NetBEUI
- Change de settings of your TCP/IP protocol to match your Windows network
- Don't forget your subnetmask (usually 255.255.255.0)
- Disable Automatic Configuration = 1
- Enter a few times for ok
- Hij will want the OEM Driver disk. You can find this in your temp directory
- Answer 'yes' to reboot
- After the reboot he will want to log into your network.
- After you enter username and password he wil ask your okay on the creation of a password file. Say 'Yes'
- If you've done it by the book you will now have a working DOS Client
**Part 4**
Here we will replace the client software with the server server software (much cooler!)
- Go to the dir where you NET.EXE is located (standard is c:\net).
Pay Attention, there is also a version in your windows 98 dir. Ignore that one!
- Execute c:\tempdir\Wg1049.exe
- He will want to overwrite 4 files.
- Edit your system.ini in your c:\net dir and change the filesharing from No to Yes
- Edit your autoexec.bat (in the root) and replace the line 'c:\net\net start' with 'c:\net\net start server'
- Reboot!
- After the reboot the last line on your screen should read 'The command completed succesfully'
- Type from c:\net 'net share mp3car=c:\ /full /remark="The MP3 Player For In Your Car" /saveshare:yes'
- If your want a password check the syntax by entering 'net share ? |more'
Your DOS Server is ready for use!
