Solaris 2.5 Beta Driver Update 2 Overview and Instructions The Solaris x86 Driver Update is the mechanism by which new device drivers and video support are distributed to our customers. This is the second of three scheduled Driver Updates for Solaris 2.5 Beta. This Driver Update brings bring the level of hardware support for Solaris 2.5 up to that of Solaris 2.4 with Driver Update 7. Beta Driver Update 3 will be released concurrently with Solaris 2.4 Driver Update 8 in late August. Beta Program participants and Developer Conference attendees are urged to obtain the Driver Updates electronically. For those who are unable to do so, a limited number of diskettes is available. ========================================================================= LEGEND: u - update to device driver included on Beta CD The Beta Driver Update 2 includes support for the following devices: SCSI Host Adapter - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * AMD PCscsi, PCscsi II, and PCnet-SCSI * DPT SmartCache III Models PM-2024 and PM-2124 * Tricord Intelligent SCSI Subsystem Controller u Adaptec AHA-2940/AHA-2940W, AIC-7870/7850 IBM Fast/Wide SCSI-2 Adapter Adaptec AHA-2740/AHA-2742, AIC-7770 RAID CONTROLLERS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Compaq SMART SCSI Array Controller * DPT SmartRAID Models PM-3222 and PM-3224 Dell SCSI Array IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Streaming RAID Adapter/A IBM SCSI-2 RAID Controller NETWORK - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Compaq Netflex-2 DualPort ENET, NetFlex-2 ENET-TR Controller (Ethernet) u Integrated AMD PCnet-PCI Ethernet Novell/Eagle Technology NE3200 Intel EtherExpress 32 Racal Interlan ES3210 Intel EtherExpress PRO SMC EtherCard Elite 32T 3Com EtherLink II, II/16, EtherLink 16, 16TP VIDEO - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM (S3 Vision968) Diamond Stealth 64 Video DRAM (S3 Vision868) Matrox Millennium Nanao EizoAccel AA51 (F82C480) Nanao HA50/HL50 Nanao HA60 Number Nine 9FX Motion531 (S3 Vision868) Number Nine 9FX Motion771 (S3 Vision968) STB Velocity 64V (S3 Vision968) AST Manhattan P5090 (Cirrus Logic GD5424) Cirrus Logic 5420/5424/5428 w/512K memory Cirrus Logic 5430/5434 Compaq QVision 1024E Compaq QVision 2000 (Rev. Refer to the Beta Driver Update 2 Guide for instructions. The Beta Driver Update 2 is available either on diskette or electronically via the Internet (the World Wide Web and anonymous ftp sites). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNET via WORLD WIDE WEB (Access1.Sun.COM) To obtain files from the Access1 Web Page: 1) Open URL http://access1.sun.com/gateway/drivergate/driverMain.html and then select "Solaris 2.5 Beta Driver Update." You will be presented with a review the drivers available in this driver update and then a list of the following files to download: bdu2tar.3.Z -- compressed tar archive (includes 3 diskette images, 3.5") bdu2video-1.3-- single 3.5" dd diskette image (disk 1 of 2) bdu2video-2.3-- single 3.5" dd diskette image (disk 2 of 2) bdu2doc.ps -- Solaris 2.4 x86 Beta Driver Update 2 Guide, Postscript format bdu2doc.txt -- Solaris 2.4 x86 Beta Driver Update 2 Guide, ASCII text format readme -- This Driver Update Announcement document 2) Download the desired files by selecting the file name and then specifying a local file name when prompted. 3) Uncompress the the archive(s). For example: uncompress bdu2tar.3.Z 4) Using the tar command, extract the diskette images from the archive(s). For example: tar xvf bdu2tar.3 (Note that the video file is not an archive.) 5) Using the dd command, copy each diskette image to a diskette. For example: dd if=dsk_boot.3 of=/dev/rdiskette0 bs=1024k Note: if you are using a Solaris system running Volume Manager (vold) use the following commands: volcheck dd if=dsk_boot.3 of=/vol/dev/aliases/floppy0 bs=1024k eject floppy0 6) Follow the instructions in the Beta Driver Update 2 Guide to install the update. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FTP.UU.NET (Anonymous FTP) To obtain the files using ftp: 1) Use ftp to connect to ftp.uu.net: 'ftp ftp.uu.net' 2) At the login prompt, use 'anonymous'. 3) For the password, use your complete email address. 4) At the ftp prompt, set file type to "binary" ftp> binary 5) cd /vendor/sun/sun-doc/x-86-driver/2.5 6) 'cd' into the BDU2 directory. This location contains the compressed tar archives, video drivers, README's, and DU documentation. 7) 'get' the desired files (see above for the archive file names). 8) Quit the FTP session: ftp> quit 9) Uncompress the the archive. For example: uncompress bdu2tar.3.Z 10) Using the tar command, extract the diskette images from the archive. For example: tar xvf bdu2tar.3 (Note that the video file is not an archive.) 11) Using the dd command, copy each diskette image to a diskette. For example: dd if=dsk_boot.3 of=/dev/rdiskette0 bs=1024k Note: if you are using a Solaris system running Volume Manager (vold) use the following commands: volcheck dd if=dsk_boot.3 of=/vol/dev/aliases/floppy0 bs=1024k eject floppy0 12) Follow the instructions in the Beta Driver Update 2 Guide to install the update. NOTE: If you do not have access to UNIX and the UNIX tar and uncompress utilities, there are equivalent uncompress and tar utilities available for DOS. These programs are be available in the SimTel MSDOS software collection. Two ftp sites that carry these programs are wuarchive.wustl.edu and oak.oakland.edu. You will also need to use dd to create DU diskettes. If you do not have access to UNIX and the UNIX dd utility, you may obtain a DOS version of dd.exe from: /vendor/sun/sun-doc/x-86-driver -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMPUSERVE To obtain files from CompuServe, establish a CompuServe session and at the prompt type "g sunsoft" or "go sunsoft". Proceed to the Solaris x86 Library ("lib 9"). You can then download the ZIP archive which contains the diskette image files you need. If you do not have an unzip utility (such as unzip, or pkunzip), they are available on CompuServe. The file DD.EXE posted here is a DOS executable that will allow you to make diskette copies on a DOS system. The utility accepts the name of the diskette image file and will copy it to the diskette. The command syntax is: DD.EXE [FILENAME] [DRIVE]: Example: DD.EXE DSKBOOT.3 A: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ANY OF THE ABOVE: ---------------------------------------------- For US and Canada, you can reach the Sunsoft Support Organization at 800-435-8707.
