USING MICROSOFT CHART Requires graphics card, DOS 2.0 or higher. Copy the Chart program, fonts and the CHART.PIF file to hard disk. Run Setup program by typing A:setup. There is a sample program; they chart census following prompt. Parts or OBJECTS of a chart: a data point or data series, an axis, a legend, a label, the entire chart with all its parts. PRESS H TO GET HELP. This is general help which has submenus. Press R to resume. Move around chart with cursor and tabs. CHART #1 To make Chart #1 which is attached, I entered the program by typing "chart." The next step is to wait for the first working screen and then type "n" for name command. You move around this section by using the tab key. For instance, I named this chart "elec amuse, 1/86 sales," then hit tab key to go to next prompt where I entered dealer, then amount, then text, leaving the last increment at 1. I think that these were the only categories requested. When you are done, hit the return and you will return to the main screen where you will then have the name of your chart. You then use the cursor and alpha prompt to enter values. For instance, I hit "a" then typed "lowen's," then moved cursor down, hit "a," typed "toys, etc.," etc. When I finished with the names, I then went to the amount with the cursor and entered each amount, i.e. "86" for Lowen's, etc. When I was done, I hit "C" and it created this chart. I then printed it. CHART #2 I did not know how to save, so I re-entered data and then hit "G" for Gallery. This leads you through a menu of charts. I first selected pie chart and then selected the final entry on the menu which offered percentages, which the program calculated itself. While there, I learned how to save. Hit "T" for Transfer and use the tab key to get to Save. Hit return. NOTE: You can enter the program by typing chart with the name of a saved chart and you will go right to that particular chart. There is also a batch command for immediate printing. COMMAND MENUS There are three command menus: list, entry and chart. LIST: analyze, chart, entry, format, gallery, help, include, modify, name, option, print, quit, transfer, Xternal. ENTRY: alpha, chart, format, gallery, help, list, modify, name, options, print, quit, sort, transfer, value. CHART: alpha, delete, entry, format, gallery, help, insert, list move, options, print, quit, range, split, transfer. You can access each one from the others. To move along the command or status lines, use the spacebar or backspace. When you are where you want, hit return. Or just hit the first letter of the command you want to select. By selecting a command, you will generally get a new menu of subcommands. IMPORTING FROM OTHER SOFTWARE You can use External command to copy data from Multiplan, Lotus 1-2-3 (wks files), Symphony (wrk files) and dBase II and III. To get Lotus or Symphony data, select the appropriate name from the external menu. You should select "worksheet." You can also select a "graph" that has been stored with a worksheet. Be sure to save the new chart with a different name. LAST WORDS From rummaging around in the manual, it seems that whatever you do will put you into a new menu. If you can figure out what the different commands mean, you will breeze through; if not, just experiment, as I will do, until you figure things out.
