ICOEDIT - version 1.5.2
August 1996/Dec. 1999
My Cat Software

Another 16-colors Icon Editor.... with a big Plus:
it also can edit Bitmaps, even create buttons for you!
In fact, it can edit any picture between 16 x 16 pixels
and 32 x 32 pixels, even rectangular ones (bitmaps only),
but... it is restricted to 16 colors images (if they have
more, they will be automatically decreased).
Quickly Add Text, Extract icons from library files,
use long file names on 32-bit systems, and more!
Needs VBRUN300.DLL to run.

New in version 1.1:
------------------
. corrected a bug that caused a (non-fatal) error if you opened
     some DLL files
. corrected a bug that disabled the wrong File menu item ("Check
"Transparency instead of "Test Icon") in Windows 95
. added a Clip button to the Select All function to send the
     whole image to the ClipBoard
. Open and Save directories are now saved and will be the default
next time you Open or Save As... an image

New in version 1.5:
------------------
. Replaced references to CompuServe's SWREG info with REGNET online
      registration info
. Decrease colors to 16 now works in 16-bit and up video modes
. Test Icon: now a DeskTop Sim picture in Check Transparency
. Refresh List button in OPEN module
. Add Text: Transparent, more Windows fonts (including some
      specific to Windows95)
. Long filenames (files only, not directories) for 32-bit systems
. Bitmaps with non standard 16-col palettes: ICOEDIT will use it
if your video mode is set to 16-bit and up video modes
. button to view bitmaps that are too big (or too small) to open
      into ICOEDIT
  . some buglets corrected
  . ... and made an INSTALL.EXE!

New in version 1.5.1
. corrected a bug that could prevent ICOEDIT from running if the
user's short date format was set to "no separator"; affects only
    non-registered users.

New in version 1.5.2
. corrected a bug in INSTALL.EXE that prevented it work on Win 3.1
. Save button enabled as soon as you Extract an Icon from an EXE file
    or an Icon Library
. If an Icon has been extracted, ICOEDIT will check if it has 16 colors
or more (if your video mode is High or True Color)

To Install:
----------
Just run the INSTALL.EXE from Windows, and it will copy all the files
in the directory of your choice. If you want too, it will add an Icon
to a Program Manager Group (Windows 3.x) or a Shortcut to your Start
Menu (Windows 95/98/NT).

You can also copy all the files manually, they are not compressed.

ICOEDIT will not run if you don't have VBRUN300.DLL in you Windows\System
directory (it is the run-time file for all programs written in Visual
Basic 3.0).

It is available on all online services and all over the Internet.
On CompuServe, look for VBRUN3.ZIP in Library 1 of the WinShare
Forum, or go PCFF and search for file VBRUN3.ZIP.

The file CALL32.DLL is needed only by users who will run ICOEDIT on
Windows 95/98/NT. It can be put in the same directory as ICOEDIT.EXE,
or in your Windows\System directory, will those zillions DLLs you
already have...

You can also put all the other files with ICOEDIT.EXE for future reference.

Note for Windows 95/98/NT Users:
-------------------------------
Remember that ICOEDIT is basically a Windows 3.1 program, written before
the release of Windows 95.

I add to make an upgrade version because CompuServe is discontinuing its
Shareware Registration service at the end of 1998. I took the opportunity
to correct some bugs (major and minor) and add the "long filenames" bit,
but upgrading it to a full Editor that can use all dimensions, color depths
and multi-icon ICO files is too much work.

If you need a Small Image Editor better suited to Windows 95/98/NT, you are
invited to try BMPTOICO, my other application. Version 3.0.3 can open all
kinds of icons and bitmaps, edit 256 and 16 millions colors images.
Version 4.0, which should be released in the first quarter of 1999, will
have a real Editor, similar to ICOEDIT, and will be able to Edit New images,
Increase/Decrease Color Depths, etc.

Because I will not upgrade ICOEDIT further, all registered users of ICOEDIT
will be able to get BMPTOICO for free. So the choice is yours.

The latest versions of all my programs are always available on CompuServe
or on my own Web site,

You can get there directly from a link in the Help/About form.

Registration:
------------
ICOEDIT will run for 30 days. After that, you need to... Register!

Registration is only $20 US (or $20 Cdn if you live in Canada and pay by
snail-mail).

Register on the WWW via REGNET:

. From ICOEDIT: Clicking the "Register Online" link in the About
form (Help menu) will take you directly to RegNet's ICOEDIT page
(you need to have a Default browser setup; might not work with
     Win 3.1)
RegNet's page for ICOEDIT, ID 2983:
         http://www.reg.net/product.asp?ID=2983

American users can send a cheque. If you live outside Canada or the US,
and if the charges for a bank draft or money order are out of this world,
you can send the equivalent in your country's money (bank notes only);
although it might not be safe, I have had no problem so far.

The shareware version is not crippled in any way, except for the trial
period.

ICOEDIT is a Shareware program and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. You may evaluate it for 30 days; after
that trial period, you will have two more weeks to evaluate it,
then ICOEDIT will stop running (but will still allow you to enter
the registration number if you got one).

Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not give
it away altered or as part of another system. And please don't
give them your registration number! The essence of "user-supported"
software is to provide personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find this
program useful and find that you are using ICOEDIT and continue
to use it after a reasonable trial period, you should look deep
into your pocketbook and make an effort to register it (see
above). This will entitle you to the right of running one copy of
the program on one computer at a time.
