A Chain of balls and cylinders

  • In Tutorial 2, we create a scene moving the object file independently per part that consists of balls and cylinders using Independent mode.


  • Creating PGL file


    1. Loading a scene file
      Start up LightWave 3D Layout, and set ContentDirectory to "Tutorial" to load the scene file chain.lws. At this time, since the bones are set to default value, the polygons at the joint of the bones are bent like being crushed.

    2. Editing PGL Editor
      Start up PGL_Editor from Plugins menu.

    3. Deleting PGL file
      Since there is a PGL file already created included in Tutorial folder, select Delete PGL from File menu before starting Tutorial to delete the PGL file.

    4. Grouping of the default value
      Set the current object of both Object pop-up and Reference pop-up to chain.lwo. Then, execute Make Default Groups in Edit menu. Each point is laid out to the closest bone based on the position information of bones.

    5. Check the movement on the panel
      Set the deformation mode to Independent, and move the slider bar of to check the current movement. In the default, the vertex of a part of the cylinders will move along with balls.

    6. Correcting the grouping of points using brush
      First, select Bone (1), and press 'A' on the keyboard so that you can easily edit to focus Bone (1).
      Then, change the selecting mode to , and lay out the vertex of cylinder laying across Bone (2) to Bone (1). Press Ctrl key, and select the points of the cylinder as the image below with pressing the left button of the mouse. Of course, you can make the selection in Rectangle mode.

    7. Making the same corrections on other bones
      Make the above setting also to other bones likewise. Select the bones either by selecting the current bones from Bones pop-up list, or by clicking on the bones in 3D view using the left button of the mouse with pressing SHIFT key. When it is difficult for you to select points at the time of making the setting, it is also possible to make the selection on the way of animation with moving Frame slider bar.


  • Setting PGL Play


    1. Setting PGL Play to the chain
      Open Objects of Layout, and set PGL_Play at Displacement Map Plugins for chain.lwo. Select Independent for Influence, and press button to copy Influence set the to the current bone all the other bones.

    2. Preview the animation
      Press the playback button of Layout, and preview the animation.
