V - The File Viewer: Version 3.1
================================

V is a combination File Viewer and Directory Browser for Windows 95/98 and
Windows NT (Intel platform only).

Some of V's main features include:

  - It is fast and compact.
  - It can view files of unlimited size - quickly!
  - It excels at viewing files in hex format. You can search for a
    sequence of hex bytes rather than just a text string.
  - File searching and GREP functionality.
  - Regular expression searching.
  - Favorite files and directories may be bookmarked for easier retrieval.
  - It can be extended through the use of User Commands.
  - It can be installed in the System Tray.
  - It can be used to view the redirected output of another program/command.
  - Line numbers can be displayed/printed.
  - Ability to highlight and copy COLUMNS of data.
  - Files can be viewed in EBCDIC as well as ASCII.
  - Selections may be appended to the clipboard.
  - Files can easily be sent as email attachments.
  - It has an easy to use interface which takes full advantage of keyboard
    shortcuts and right-click menus. There is no "File Open Dialog Box"
    in sight!
  - Extensive printing support.
    Headers/Footers can be customized and the listing can be printed with or
    without line numbers. Files can also be printed in 2UP Mode - ie, the
    file is printed in landscape mode with 2 pages per sheet of paper.

Just type "V" and see for yourself!

============
Installation
============

The archive should contain the following files:

    File Name  Size (bytes)  Description
    ---------  ------------  -----------
    v.exe           613,376  The program!
    v.hlp           367,580  V Help file
    v.cnt             6,686  V Help Contents file
    dlls.zip        587,058  Required DLLs - MFC42.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL
    file_id.diz         766  Brief program description
    order.html 3,905 Order form (load in your browser and print)
    order.txt 2,994 Order form - plain text format
    readme.txt        4,174  This file
    register.txt      3,662  How to register
    whatsnew.txt      1,176  New features in version 3.1

Simply copy the files V.EXE, V.HLP and V.CNT (ie, V.*) to a directory in your
path. You also require Microsoft's version 4.2 runtime DLLs - MFC42.DLL and
MSVCRT.DLL which are included in the file DLLS.ZIP. The chances are that your
system already has these files installed. Just type "V" to run the program and
see if you get any error messages. If you do, you will need to unzip the DLLs
and copy them into your Windows system directory (usually \windows\system if
you are running Windows 95 and \winnt\system32 if you are running Windows NT).

All other files in this archive may be safely deleted.

Once you have done this, you can use V to install itself onto the Desktop and
onto other system menus.
