B. Emergency Recovery - by Using Recovery CD (Bootable CD) or Diskette
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Limitation and Usage of the command-line RESTORE program

The command-line RESTORE program (RESTORE.EXE) only restores files and directories which have no long file names (MS-DOS file names only), if the system is booted up from a Startup Disk or Bootable CD. This is because long file name is not supported in MS-DOS.

The command-line RESTORE program is used for emergency recovery purpose (e.g. recovering the Windows 95 or Windows 98 system). After restoring the Windows 95 or Windows 98 from your backup file, you should be able to boot up the system. You can install NTI Backup NOW! and use its Restore function, or run the command-line RESTORE program in the MS-DOS prompt, to restore the rest of the files from your backup file(s) (e.g. the files with long file name).

Step 1: Using the RESTORE program (RESTORE.EXE)

1) If you are restoring from a Recovery CD (Bootable CD), then you must follow one of the following:

For IDE Drives: Set your CD-ROM drive to come first in the boot sequence (e.g. "CD-ROM, A, C") in your BIOS settings.

For SCSI Drives: If you have a SCSI drive, in the adapter settings, select "Enable bootable CD" option if your adapter supports it, and set SCSI to come first in the boot sequence (e.g. "SCSI, A, C") in your BIOS settings.

2) Insert the Recovery floppy disk (Startup Disk), or the Recovery CD (Bootable CD), Reboot your computer.

3) When the command line prompt appears, type "restore" and the backup file filename at the DOS prompt with a space in between "restore" and the filename, and press Enter. This backup file is the one that contains the backup of your Windows 95 or Windows 98 (e.g. your C: drive).

4) All the Windows 95 or Windows 98 system files (with 8.3 filenames) will be restored. Remove the Recovery floppy disk (Startup Disk), or the Recovery CD (Bootable CD), Reboot your computer.

Step 2: Restoring all other files on the computer

After rebooting your computer from Step 1, you can restore all other files from your backup file(s). There are two ways to do this: you can use the command-line RESTORE program, or the Restore function from Backup NOW!.

A. Using the command-line RESTORE program

1) In Start menu, choose Run, type command, press Enter. You will open a MS-DOS prompt window.
2) Go to the directory C:\NTI\RESTORE where RESTORE.EXE is located. type CD C:\NTI\RESTORE, then press Enter. The Recovery floppy disk (Startup Disk) should contain a copy of RESTORE.EXE too, if you have problem to locate it in your hard disk.
3) Run the RESTORE program.

B. Using Backup NOW!

1) Install NTI Backup NOW! to your computer.
2) Follow the on-line help instructions on how to restore from a backup file using the application. (Quick Starts: "Restoring from a backup file.")

C. Known Problems
-----------------
(1) For caddy type of CD-R/RW drives (e.g. YAMAHA CDR400), this version cannot do automatic data verification right after backup. The reason is that for caddy type drive, it is impossible to insert back the backup disc to the drive by software alone. Ejecting disc after backup is necessary for volume change refresh. It is suggested to use the Compare mode manually for data verification.
