1. CONTACT INFORMATION

Alexei Reatov, the author of DejaViews, can be contacted at: <alexei@mail.href.com>
The product's Web page is: <http://www.betterbrowser.com/dejaviews.htm>
Author's personal Web page is: <http://www.betterbrowser.com/personal>

There is also an "egroup" on DejaViews, where notifications on DejaViews updates will be posted. To subscribe, send an email to <dejaviews-subscribe@egroups.com>.

-------------------------------------------------

2. HOW TO REGISTER

DejaViews is shareware (or rather "bannerware" - see below), but it is NOT free nor public domain. If you intend to keep the program on your machine and use it in the future, you should REGISTER it. At the time of writing this memo the registration cost was US$35 .
NOTE: This price and the registration procedure can change at any time. Please visit the following URL for the most complete and up-to-date registration instructions and pricing:

  <http://www.betterbrowser.com/djv_purchase.htm>

The payment should be done online using your credit card at one of the secure Web shops selling DejaViews. The preferred Web store for DejaViews registrations is that of HREF Tools Corp. You will find a link to it at the page mentioned above.

If you have any difficulties there, use any of the following links:

  REGSOFT: <https://www.regsoft.com/cgi-bin/reg_it_offsite.pl?12656>
  DIGIBUY: <http://www.digibuy.com/cgi-bin/order.html?amreatov+92771991271>

Australian users may prefer to regiser via Shareware-Australia:

  <http://www.shareware-australia.com/betterbrowser/dejaviews.htm>

The order form for Australian users is available in the australian_order.txt file, distributed with the program.

Once you have paid for the registration, send me a message containing your DejaViews serial number. From the Registration dialog, this can be done by pressing the [EMail] button.

NOTE: You may send the registration request to me either BEFORE or AFTER making the payment, I'll send out your activation code as soon as both the request AND a transaction receipt are received.

-------------------------------------------------

3. BENEFITS OF REGISTRATION

- First of all, the activation key HIDES THE BANNER PANEL. You might want this because banners are often considered annoying and because loading them takes part of your bandwidth, making the searches slower (see below).

- As DejaViews evolves, it is likely to include new features which are ONLY available in the registered mode!

- Registered users will have more attention when I'll be answering your tech support questions.

-------------------------------------------------

4. "BANNERWARE": HOW IT WORKS, BANDWIDTH OVERHEAD

A lot of people use shareware programs without ever registering them, which is a major problem of a shareware author. Banner ads displayed by a non-registered copy of DejaViews should earn me some money, while you are deciding if DejaViews is worth registering.

DejaViews decides where to go for banners according to the configuration info received from its home site before the first query is sent (see next section). A new banner is downloaded on each submitted query and on each received article, but not more often than once a 20 sec. Therefore in the worst case you will be getting 3 banners a minute. Given that banner size is usually about 10K, this makes 30Kb/min of additional banner traffic.

On a 33,600 modem, this may take up about 15% of the total bandwidth and on a slow 14,400 connection this may be up to %35 of the bandwidth. Of course, these figures are very approximate and may vary according to the quality of your connection and the actual banners being rotated.

-------------------------------------------------

5. SECURITY: DOES DEJAVIEWS SPY ON MY MACHINE?

Any program that uses Internet connection can potentially do some evil things to you by transmitting unauthorized information to or from your machine. A program which implicitly connects to some Internet sites may look especially suspicious. DejaViews DOES connect to its home site every time you run it and issue the first query, but it does NOT transfer any unauthorized information to or from your machine. Here are the details:

Before sending the first query, DejaViews checks for newer versions and the banner source info at its home site. To do so, it sends a request to <http://www.betterbrowser.com> to get a tiny configuration file. The only machine-specific information DejaViews sends out in this HTTP request is its "serial number" (unique GUID generated and stored by the program when it's being installed). Your email address or any other personal or sensitive information from your computer are NEVER sent out by DejaViews.

If a newer version of DejaViews is detected, the program asks if you want to see the list of changes in your default browser. If you agree, you'll get the "DejaViews Revision" page with the download link. DejaViews won't start any downloads itself.

If in doubt, look what information actually gets transmitted with any of the WinSock and HTTP spy programs available on the Web (visit <http://www.sstinc.com/webanal.html> or <http://www.adenet.es/utilinter.html>, for example).

With best regards,
