HTMLcat is the HTML Catalog, an extensive collection of
well-organized, up-to-date information.

This Windows help application is optimized for Windows 95 and
later. If you are using Windows 3.1, see the special information
before using this book.

This is try-before-you-buy software. This is not free software.
If you use these materials, you must pay for the registered
version. Evaluation versions have limited features.

You may use this application for up to 14 days for evaluation.
Your evaluation period begins the first time you open this book.
We think you will know in a few minutes if HTMLcat is right for
you. After a few days, if you have received fair value from this
book or you are still using it, you might as well register and
get the benefits of the complete book. If it's worth your time
to download and it's worth your time to use, then it's certainly
worth purchasing.

--( Registration Benefits )--
* Faster and easier to use than to search giant HTML files or
  outdated ink-on-paper reference books.
* Exclusive 32-bit COLORcat color swatch help file. This
beautiful book works with HTMLcat, offering an extensive array
of color samples, color lists, and boilerplate HTML lists.
* No annoying registration reminders. The evaluation version
will stop working after the evaluation time has expired.
* Latest, complete version. There's a mountain of information in
this evaluation version, and the release book has even more.
* Sample HTML documents and pictures. Use examples as starting
places to create your own Internet pages.
* Separate Contents window for 32-bit Microsoft Windows.
* It's a CD-ROM worth of reference without the CD. This book is
the result of thousands of hours of work. Supporting the tools
you use makes it possible for developers to create even more
  useful tools.
* It's a bargain!

This software cannot be installed or used after August 1, 1999.

--( Installation )--
The ZIP archive contains the help file, plus (in the registered
version) a help contents file named HTMLCAT.CNT. Also included
are HTMLCAT.GIF and HTMLCAT2.GIF. These are the files you need:

  htmlcat.hlp Highly-compressed text and graphics.
htmlcat.dll 32-bit DLL. Required data and utilities.
  htmlcat.txt This text file.
  r_help.exe 32-bit program. Starts HTMLcat.
  r_help.txt Additional information about r_help.exe.

Copy HTMLCAT.HLP, HTMLCAT.DLL and R_HELP.EXE to the same
directory on your hard drive. Always install these files in the
same directory--do not install the DLL in the Windows or System
directory. Click on the help file with Windows Explorer or File
Manager, or create a shortcut to R_HELP.EXE.

Tip:
In Windows, try making a "Reference" group or menu, with
links to often-used help files. This is also a great place for
saved HTML pages, Encyclopedias, and text file notes. Now,
when we need to look-up something, it's all in our custom
  reference library.

Get a copy of ASCIIcat from the web site--it's a useful (and
free) tool for programmers, writers, designers. Look for
additional reference books on the web site. You can use
R_HELP.EXE to start ASCIIcat just as easily as HTMLcat.

Note:
See HTMLcat for additional information about configuration,
sample files, and troubleshooting. In the table of contents,
click the Support book, then select the Setup item. You can
also search the index for "Setup".

See the Setup topic for information about using files included
  with this book.

--( Help File Loader )--
If you sometimes find that you have started several copies of
HTMLcat, you can make sure that only one copy is running by
starting it with r_help.exe.

r_help.exe checks if HTMLcat is loaded; if it is, it switches to
it (and restores it to the top if it is minimized). If it isn't
loaded, r_help.exe starts HTMLcat.

--( Windows Hides DLLs )--
Microsoft Windows 98 and later and Microsoft Windows 95 with
Internet Explorer 4 or later installed will configure Windows
Explorer to hide DLL files. If you move HTMLCAT.HLP to a
different folder, you must also move HTMLCAT.DLL. To do this you
must be able to see the DLL.

You can display System Files in Explorer by going to the View
menu (not the Views button), and selecting Folder Options. Now
select the View tab until you see the "Hidden files" section.
There are three options:

( ) Do not show hidden or system files
  (x) Do not show hidden files
  ( ) Show all files.

Select the second item, then click the Apply button, and the
DLLs will come back. Mostly, showing DLLs just makes the file
list messy, so you can change it back when it isn't important.

--( Windows 3.1 )--
The DLL furnished with this evaluation release supports only
32-bit Windows. The 16-bit DLL, is not included.

If you are using Windows 3.1 and want to evaluate this book,
send an E-mail note, and request the 16-bit DLL. Make the
subject of the E-mail something like "Windows 3.1 HTMLcat",
and send it to:

--( Free GIF pictures )--
We've included three pictures you can use on your web pages:

  htmlcat2.gif 50x47 pixels 0.7KB. The "<?>" logo.
  htmlcat.gif 88x31 pixels 0.7KB. "Supports HTMLcat <?>"
anything.gif 88x31 pixels 0.7KB. "Best with Anything" logo.

These pictures are as small as possible. They use 16-color
palettes.

htmlcat2.gif is a cool "<?>" picture without text. Here's the
HTML to use it:

  <A HRef="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/r_harvey" Target="_top">
  <IMG Src="htmlcat2.gif" Width=50 Height=47 Border=0 Alt="HTMLcat"></A>

The second picture, htmlcat.gif, is the same proportions as
other "supports" GIFs, such as Netscape's Internet Explorer's.
One difference is size, because it's only 700 bytes. Here's how
to use it:

  <A HRef="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/r_harvey" Target="_top">
  <IMG Src="htmlcat.gif" Width=88 Height=31 Border=0 Alt="HTMLcat"></A>

HTML is a portable document specification. The ideal document
looks good on *anything* -- any display device or printed
output. If yours are portable, not beholding to one company's
proprietary standards, say so with anything.gif:

  <P>Best viewed with:

Thank you for evaluating HTMLcat, the online HTML catalog.
