1. IMPORTANT UPDATE NEWS
==============================================

A new feature which temporarily closes down catalogs while performing
updates is now available using ECremote. The last link at the top of all
categories in ECremote allows you to view the status and toggle the function.

The ECware Help Desk system is now available. If you are an ECpartner,
please send email to helpdesk@ecware.com with your registration number in
the subject field and state that you are interested in receiving Help Desk
software in the body of the message.

To determine which ECware Pro 4.0 build is installed on your server,
right-click on the ecware.exe file, choose Properties and select the version
tab. The build number is number following the last decimal i.e. 4.00.206 is
version 4.00 build 206.

ECadmin.exe has been replaced with ECremote.exe to better reflect its new
official name. The address is the same, only the filename has changed. The
new official name for ECremote is the Remote Management Console.

Two directories have been added to the ECpublic directories called Images
and Templates. You guess what goes where :) This change was made to better
organize resources and was suggested by many. I'm sure you will find it makes
a lot of sense.

2. INTRODUCTION
============================================

Thank you for downloading ECware Pro 4.0.

ECware Pro 4.0 is e-commerce software for the Internet that supports
ODBC, CyberCash, multiple catalogs, sales modes, memberships, coupons,
online administration, and the list goes on. ECware is the perfect
solution for ISPs, Developers, Integrators, and merchants in need of a
scaleable solution that will grow with changing needs. In a matter of
hours you can setup and deploy electronic catalogs complete with a
search engine, dynamic content, secure payment system, and sophisticated
remote administration tools. ECware is fully secure from end to end and
integrates seamlessly into any web site using a few simple HTML tags.

ECware Pro 4.0 has significant improvements over earlier versions.

The ECware Pro 4.0 eval is a full version with no limitations. The catch
is that it is licensed to the local machine which limits the online admin
program to run only on the local machine and not over the web. ECware
Pro 4.0 demo will still work over the Internet for shoppers and is not
crippled in any way. Once a software key is purchased and installed,
the admin site will be accessible from the web and all of your work will
be preserved. The toll free sales line for purchasing the software key
for ECware Pro 4.0 is 888-597-8008. The cost for ECware Pro 4.0 is $995
for each catalog. Reseller pricing is available to qualified ISPs and
Developers.Visit http://www.ecware.com/partners.html or call for details.

IMPORTANT: If this copy of ECware Pro 4.0 is TechWave enabled, this
section applies to you. During setup you will be notified.

If this software is distributed using the TechWave Electronic Software
Distribution (ESD) system, once you obtain a license for this software,
you will only be able to run the software on the computer in which you
install the software key. If you are using a test system to try out this
software, re-install this software on your "live" system using a fresh
copy of the installation program, purchase the software key from
TechWave by calling their toll free number and install the key on the
    "live" system.

3. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
============================================

    - Windows NT version 4.0
    - Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack
    - Service Pack 4 for Windows NT
    - Intel Pentium class processor
    - 64MB of System Memory (128MB recommended)
    - 50MB of free disk space and ~ 10MB per Catalog
    - Web server software*
    - Active Server Pages**
     * IIS 4.0 or WebSite Pro 2.0 are recommended.
** ASP is required for advanced features.

4. GETTING STARTED
============================================

After setup is complete and Windows restarts:

    1) Read the documentation:
For the digital version of ECware Pro 4.0, the User's Guide is in the
form of an online help file available at http://www.ecware.com/webhelp.
A link to the User's Guide is located under the start button on the
task bar at: Start-> Programs-> ECware Pro 4.0.
Pay special attention to the security section.

    2) Check Security:
Make sure the ../ECscripts Path you specified during Setup is secure
from access. You must not be able to get a directory listing from the
Web or any access other than running an executable. For IIS, turn
Execute on and read off. For WebSite, setup Standard CGI.

    3) Visit the Demo Site:
A working demonstration of ECware, including ASP and DCP is available
locally on your server using a Web browser.
Visit http://<yourdomain>/ECdemo/ to explore the demo site.

NOTE: If the Demo Site address cannot be resolved by your browser,
create an alias for the ..\ECdemo folder. This folder was added under
the ..\ECscripts directory by setup. The alias name must be
"http://<yourdomain>/ECdemo". This alias is required in order to
run the demo. If the Demo Site doesn't work, this is why. The alias
is configured automatically if using O'Reilly WebSite or Microsoft
       Internet Information Server.

    4) To access the Remote Management Console:
       Visit https://<yourdomain>/ECscripts/ECremote.exe. ECremote.exe must be
secured using your Web Server software. See the User's Guide for more
       information.

NOTE: Be sure to follow the proper steps for setting up security to
ensure that only qualified merchants can access the ECremote program.
Information on setting up security can be found in the User's Guide.

NOTE: If using the CyberCash 2.1.4 with IIS, make sure the
..\smps-2.1.4-nt\merchants\ directory and all sub-directories allow
full access to the IUSR_<servername> account, or writes to the
directories required to create the scripts will not be possible.

5. UNINSTALLING ECWARE
============================================

You can completely remove ECware from your system using the uninstall
program located under the Start button on the Task Bar. Look under
Start-> Programs-> ECware Pro 4.0. Important Web links and the
ECconsole utility can also be found at this location.

CAUTION: Any database or configuration information may also be removed
during uninstall. It is strongly recommended that you backup any
information you wish to preserve *before* running the uninstall program.

7. KNOWN LIMITATIONS
==============================================

    1) During setup, only O'Reilly WebSite and Microsoft IIS are detected.
If you are not using one of these servers, you will have to manually
configure the aliases for ../ECscripts, ../ECdemo, and ../ECpublic.

    2) When running ECware on a Windows 95 Web server, NTFS and CyberCash
2.1.4 are not available. NTFS, which is required for a higher level of
security, is only available when using ECware Pro 4.0 with Windows NT.
CyberCash 2.1.4 does not support Windows 95.

    3) The number of catalogs that can be run on a single server is dependent
on the level of traffic, size of catalog database files, and available
        system resources. ECware's logical limit is 1000 catalogs (000 - 999).
