The geological symbol font is provided in four formats on the distribution disk:

1) as a CorelDRAW WFN file for CorelDRAW (2 to 5) Symbol mode,
2) as TrueType symbol and typeface files for Windows 3.1, 95 and NT,
3) as an Adobe Type 1 file (actually two files), and
4) as a Nimbus Q file for GeoWorks Ensemble.

               *** CorelDRAW WFN Format ***

The WFN file can be used directly in CorelDRAW! versions 2 to 5 as a symbol set. CorelDRAW! 6 and 7 uses a TrueType symbol font and no longer supports the WFN file format.

*** To install the symbol set in CorelDRAW! 2 and 3: ***

1. Copy the symbol file GEOLOGY.WFN to your CorelDRAW directory. For CorelDRAW 3, use the \Corel\Fonts directory.
2. Using the Windows Notepad program, open the file CORELDRW.INI, located in your CorelDRAW directory. In the section entitled [CorelDrwSymbols], insert the line GEOLOGIC_SYMBOLS=GEOLOGY.WFN in the appropriate place in the alphabetically ordered list.
3. Save the file, exit Notepad and start CorelDRAW. The geologic symbol set will appear as one of the choices when the symbol tool is used.

CorelDRAW! brings in a symbol as an outline drawing with no fill, while a font character defaults to no outline and black fill.

*** Adding standard Corel WFN fonts to CorelDraw 4 & 5: ***

Configuring DRAW! 4 & 5 to make use of standard Corel WFN fonts from previous versions involves several steps:

1. Using DOS or the Windows File Manager, verify that the SYMBOLS sub-directory exists. If there is no SYMBOLS sub-directory within the CORELDRW directory then you should create one.

2. Copy the geology.wfn font into the SYMBOLS directory.

3. Make a backup copy of the DRAW! 4 or 5 CorelApp.ini and CorelFNT.INI files.

4. Open the Corelapp.ini file in an ASCII text editor such as Notepad.

5. In the [Config] section, locate the 'FontsDir=' line and verify that it references the correct SYMBOLS directory. Save the file and then exit the Corelapp.ini.

6. Open the CorelFnt.INI file from Version 4 or 5 into Write (Choose No Conversion). Place your cursor on a new line in the [Symbols] section and add the text: 'GeologicSymbols=geology.wfn'

7. Save the file and close Write.

8. Restart Draw and the symbol set name should appear in the font list of the Symbol rollup.

             *** Windows TrueType Format ***

Two versions of the TrueType font are provided: GEOLOGY.TTF and GEOLOGYS.TTF. The first is organized to be used as a typeface, while the second is to be used as a symbol set. Draw 6 and 7 recognize only the second file in its Symbol Roll-up file list. Unfortunately, the relative size of the symbols was lost in creating the symbol set using CorelDRAW. You will need to resize them manually when placed on your drawing.

In both cases, install the TrueType font with the Font utility in Windows' Control Panel. Follow the instructions in your Windows manual.

               *** Adobe Type 1 Format ***

The two Adobe Type 1 files (GEOLOGY.PFM, AND GEOLOGY.PFB) require the Adobe Type Manager program to install and use them. Refer to the program manual for instructions on how to install these files.

                 *** Nimbus Q Format ***

The Nimbus Q font format (GEOLOGY.FNT) is used by GeoWorks Ensemble. Follow the instructions in the GeoWorks Ensemble documentation to install the geology symbol font.

We hope that you enjoy using these symbols. If you have ideas for additional symbols to add to a new collection, please send them to:
        Pangaea Scientific
        R.R.#5, Brockville, Ontario, Canada
        K6V 5T5

If you contribute 50 or more symbols to a new collection, we will send you the new collection free of charge. To make a new collection, we should have at least 100, and preferably more than 150 symbols.

The symbol illustrations must be accurate sketches or printed versions, with a clear indication of the relative size of each symbol. Preferably, the symbols will be part of a set used for a specific purpose, such as for palaeontology, stratigraphy, or mining.
