---------------------------- The Groove Mechanic ------------------------------

What does Groove Mechanic do?

The primary purpose of the Groove Mechanic is to dramatically improve the quality
of your old vinyl LP records and cassette tapes while getting them ready to record
on a CD. While it does not actually perform the CD writing, it does allow you to:

capture the audio from LPs or tapes (or other sources) into audio files on your
    computer
analyze the quality of the sound
remove the "clicks and pops" that often plague older LPs
remove the "rumble" that is sometimes apparent in both new and old LPs
remove the "hiss" that is often audible on tapes
work on an entire LP side (or cassette side) at a time, and then split it into
    individual songs, or "tracks"

The output from Groove Mechanic is WAV files, which are accepted by nearly every
CD-recording software package. The resulting CDs can be played back on any audio or
computer CD player.

The Groove Mechanic is shareware - if you use it beyond the 30-day evaluation
period, you are required to register it. See the file ORDER.FRM.

1. Shareware Concept

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it. If
you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are required to register it
(or purchase the licensed version if there is one).

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and retail software, and the copyright
holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below.
Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like retail authors, and the
programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and
bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The author
specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all
and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's retail or Shareware.
The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before
you buy. And because the overhead is lower, prices are lower also. Shareware has
the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay
for it.

2. Installing Groove Mechanic

You will probably receive Groove Mechanic as an Install Shield package, in which
case it can be installed by simply double-clicking on SETUP.EXE in the Windows
Explorer, and following the instructions in a few dialog boxes. This will copy
the software to your hard disk and set up an icon in your Start Menu.

If instead you received Groove Mechanic as a ZIP file you will need to decompress
it. Use PKUNZIP or one of the many Windows-based decompressors, and unzip it to a
directory such as \GROOVE. Next, add an entry for Groove Mechanic in your Start
menu (by right-clicking on the Start button then creating a folder or using an
existing folder, then creating a shortcut). Or create a shortcut on your desktop
(by right-clicking on the desktop area, selecting New->Shortcut, and then browsing
to the location where you saved the Groove Mechanic files.

The files you then have in the directory are:
        GroovMec.EXE The executable
        GroovMec.HLP The help file
        README.TXT This file
ORDER.FRM Order form, for you to e-mail or print and fill out

Then Groove Mechanic may be started, by double-clicking on the program icon.

3. History

    V1.0 Initial release
V1.1 Fixed access violation that occurred when viewing list of tracks
if there were more than 6 tracks.
V2.0 Added broadband noise (hiss) reduction.
Added more thorough click detection algorithms ("wide click detection"
and "pop detection") for records that have severe damage.
Added saving of settings such as window size and position, last directory
           used.
Added elimination of the lead-in of a track, and fadeout at the end of a
           track (user-customizable).
Changed rumble filter from 2-pole to 4-pole.
Allow multiple copies of the program to run simultaneously.
          Updated user interface.
    V2.1 Improved click repair algorithm
          Added batch (non-interactive) processing
Added permanent keys, to eliminate dependance on your system disk's
           serial number.
V2.2 Much faster analysis phase, especially on Pentium-II.
Virtually no artifacts when repairing clicks.
          Catches more clicks than 2.1.
Now you can click in the main window, to set the starting point for
          playing the audio.
Fixed some minor HMI problems (eg. sometimes the "time remaining" did not
decrement all the way to zero).

4. Distributing Groove Mechanic

You are encouraged to pass a copy of the shareware version of Groove Mechanic along
