Undelete[R] 1.2 (Build 043) for Windows NT[R] V4.0

x86 Platforms

This text file provides information you should know about this
version of Undelete.

TRIALWARE INFORMATION
=====================

1. This copy of Undelete is a full-featured version with all the
functionality of the retail product. The only difference
between this and the retail version is that this version will
expire 30 days after you install it.

2. For information about purchasing Undelete, including volume
discounts, contact your reseller, or contact Executive
Software at 818-547-2050. A detailed list of Undelete
resellers is available from the Executive Software Web site
    at www.execsoft.com.

PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
=================================================

This version of Undelete is supported on Intel x86 platforms (or
their equivalent) running Windows NT 4.0 builds 1381 and higher.
Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0 is recommended due to known
DCOM fixes in Service Pack 3.

The Server version of Undelete can be installed on either Windows
NT Servers or Workstations. The Workstation version of Undelete
can only be installed on Windows NT Workstations.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
=================

1. Undelete is available in two versions - The Server version
and the Workstation version. With the Workstation version
you can recover and undelete files on a local Workstation or
Server. With the Server version you can recover and undelete
files and directory folders on your local machine as well as
on remote computers on your network.

2. If you are installing an upgrade version of Undelete, you
must have a commercial, non-trialware version of the product
    installed on your computer.

CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
=======================

The following changes have been made to Undelete since version
1.0:

o Starting with version 1.2, the offical name of our product
has been changed from Executive Software Network Undelete
to Undelete for Windows NT, also referred to as Undelete.

o Drag & Drop is supported in this version. You can now
drag an object directly from the desktop or from Windows
NT Explorer to the Recovery Bin icon on your desktop.
Note that the exclusion list does not apply to Drag &
Drop operations. A "dragged & dropped" object will be
moved to the Recovery Bin, even if it is listed on the
    recovery Bin exclusion list.

o This version has been internationalized. Non-English
versions of Windows NT are now supported.

o The Digital Alpha platform is now supported.

o If a previous version of Undelete is detected during the
installation, you are given the option to save the previous
Recovery Bin properties and apply them to the new
    installation.

o The default installation directory for the Server
and Workstation version is now \ExecSoft\Undelete.

o An incompatibility problem noted between version 1.0 and
Dr. Solomans Anti Virus has been corrected.

o A change has been made to correct a situation that could
cause a process hang when running version 1.0.
This change also corrects the potential for a system crash
when running Undelete on dual-processor systems.

o In version 1.0, under certain circumstances, NTFS
file header information was read incorrectly and a message
was erroneously displayed indicating the user had
insufficient privileges to undelete a file. This error has
    been corrected in this version.

o In some cases with version 1.0, a deleted NTFS file
could be undeleted directly from the disk, but the
original file security attributes would not be restored
to the recovered file. This would cause a message to be
erroneously displayed indicating the user had insufficient
privileges to undelete a file. With this version, the
recovery status message displayed when the file is recovered
indicates that the file was recovered, but the file security
    attributes were not restored.

o In version 1.0, the check marks on the Setup dialog box
were mis-aligned on some systems, depending on the default
font being used on system. This has been corrected in
    this version.

KNOWN RESTRICTIONS/LIMITATIONS IN THIS RELEASE
==============================================

1. When you undelete a file, you must first specify the filename
and directory path before finding the deleted files. Wildcard
statements (such as * and ?) are supported for specifying the
    filename.

2. The Recovery Bin Exclusion List does not allow you to exclude
entire partitions from being processed. Instead, use the
Recovery Bin Properties dialog to disable the Recovery Bin on
    individual partitions.

3. If a partition is re-formatted, removed, or has its drive
letter changed, the Recovery Bin will be disabled for that
partition. You must reset the Recovery Bin properties to
re-enable the Recovery Bin on that partition.

4. When the Recovery Bin is enabled for a partition, the
\RecoveryBin folder cannot be deleted. The Recovery Bin must
first be disabled before this folder can be deleted.

5. On NTFS partitions, only Small and Large file types are
eligible for being undeleted directly from the disk. However,
all file types can be recovered from the Recovery Bin.

6. Files that have been compressed using NTFS file compression
can be recovered from the Recovery Bin, but they cannot be
recovered with the Undelete From Disk feature after they have
been really deleted. Only non-compressed files can be
undeleted. Note, however, this only applies to files
compressed with the native Windows NT file compression. It
does not apply to files compressed with third-party utilities
    such as PkZip and WinZip.

7. The default name for a common recovery bin (one bin location
for a given system) is "<system drive>:\CommonBin". This
location can be configured from the Properties dialog box.
This can be set to any valid directory name as long as it
does not conflict with the local recovery bin name on that
    drive ("<Drive>:\RecoveryBin").

8. When using a single Recovery Bin for all drives (a.k.a.
storing deleted files in the \CommonBin folder), a file must
minimally have READ permission granted to the SYSTEM group.
Otherwise, the file will bypass the common Recovery Bin when
    it is deleted.

THIRD PARTY INCOMPATIBILITY LIST
================================

Undelete is incompatible with the following third party software
applications:

1. Norton Protect. Undelete and Norton Protect perform similar
    activities that are not compatible.

2. QuarterDeck Cleansweep. Incompatibility between components
of Undelete and Cleansweep has been noted. However, it has
been observed that when Undelete is installed first,
Cleansweep can then be installed and both products run
correctly. If Cleansweep is installed first, Undelete will
not start correctly. Therefore, if you have installed
Cleansweep prior to installing Undelete, we recommend that
you uninstall Cleansweep before installing Undelete.

On installation of Undelete, a check for the QuarterDeck
Cleansweep software is made, and if found, you are warned
that Undelete is not compatible with it.

3. One site reported that a product named Virtual Address does
not function when Undelete is installed. This has not been
    independently confirmed.

REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
===================

You must be a member of the Administrators Group to install
Undelete and to undelete files directly from the disk.

Members of the Users Group can recover files from the Recovery
Bin. However, they must have sufficient file permissions and
ownership to recover a file from the Recovery Bin.

INSTALLING UNDELETE
===================

After downloading the compressed Zip file into a temporary
directory on your Windows NT system and UnZipping it,
follow these steps while logged on to an account that is a
member of the Administrators Group:

1. From Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, double click the
SETUP.EXE file in the directory where you UnZipped the
    Undelete files.

2. Read the information displayed in the Setup Installation
Wizard boxes and click the "Next" button as appropriate.

3. In the "Choose Destination Location" dialog box, either
accept the default installation location, or click the
"Browse" button to specify a different disk and/or directory.
If you specify a directory that does not exist, the setup
program will create it for you. Click the "Next" button after
specifying a disk and directory, or to accept the default
    installation location.

4. After a short period of copying files, the installation is
    complete.

5. After the installation is complete, you will be prompted
to reboot your computer. You must reboot your computer
to start the Undelete Service and device driver.

UNINSTALLING UNDELETE
=====================

Follow these steps to remove Undelete from your computer:

1. From Control Panel, double click "Add/Remove Programs".

2. Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab.

3. Highlight "Undelete".

4. Click the "Add/Remove" button. This removes the Undelete
    program files from your computer.

5. The Uninstall program gives the option to reboot your
computer. Undelete will not be completely removed until
    you reboot.

6. As a final step, manually delete the Undelete installation
    directory if it exists.
