*** Pretty Good Solitaire 98 (PGS98)
*** Frequently Asked Questions List

Version 4.98.2 -- October 1998

1. Q: When installing PGS97/98, I get a message that there
are OLE files in use and it says to reboot and try to
install again. When I install again, it does the same
thing.

A: The problem here is that certain OLE system files are
in use by some program running on your system and the
installation program can't replace the file while it is
being used. You need to close all running applications
before running a setup program. In some rare cases, this
may involve closing programs running in your system
tray (right end of the taskbar), as well as those that
appear on the main part of the taskbar. Also, if you
have Microsoft Office the Office Fast-Start in the
Startup folder may be using these OLE files.

2. Q: When installing on Windows 95, the setup program
says that the file CTL3D32.DLL is the wrong version for
my operating system (It is for Windows NT).

A: This message appears to be generated by the setup
program when it detects that the wrong version of
CTL3D32.DLL is already installed on the system. There
are two versions of this file, one for Windows 95 and one
for Windows NT. The installation program contains both
versions and will install the proper one for your operating
system. Simply press OK when you get this message and
let the installation continue.

3. Q: I've been playing PGS97/98 for a long time, but now
when I start the PGS program, all I get is the
introductory screen and nothing else happens.

A: You probably just installed a new program that
overwrote the files OLEPRO32.DLL and/or OLEAUT32.DLL
with older versions (from 1996). This is bad, since all
install programs should only overwrite a file if the file
being replaced is older and should never overwrite a
newer file with an older one. Unfortunately, there are
many installation programs that do this. The best
thing to do is just re-install PGS, as this should
overwrite these files with their newer versions. The
PGS97 install will not overwrite any file with an older
version than the one that already exists.

4. Q: When I start a game the program plays a bunch of
moves automatically even though I have AutoPlay turned
off.

A: This is the automatic game saving feature. When you
quit a game in progress, the program will automatically
save your position. When you play that particular game
again, the program will replay all your moves up to the
point where you left off. You can either continue playing
or click on the new game button for a new game. The
automatic game saving feature can be turned off in the
Options menu.

5. Q: In FreeCell I am trying to put a card in an empty
column and it won't work. Why?

A: You probably have the "KingOnly" option turned on.
This option determines whether only Kings can be played
to empty tableau piles or whether any card can be played
there. To play any card to an empty tableau pile, turn the
KingOnly option off in the Options menu. This option is
available in many games besides FreeCell. In Pretty Good
Solitaire 98, you can set this option to on or off for all
games (that use the option) in the Options menu from
the main screen. Go to the Global Settings tab.

6. Q: I have a 3D video card and in Pretty Good Solitaire
97/98 the cards are smearing or breaking up. What can I do?

A: Pretty Good Solitaire 98 may experience some card smearing
or other display problems on some systems with new 3D
"Voodoo" video cards. First, make sure you have the latest
drivers for your video card (they can usually be downloaded from
the web site of your video card manufacturer). This will often
solve the problem. If that does not solve the problem, try
turning off some of the advanced settings (in particular, try
turning down the hardware acceleration) of the card. Some
of these settings may be doing some non-standard things to
the display.
