SWEEP for NetWare Virus Detection Release Notes
            -----------------------------------------------

                      Version 3.14, October 1998

There are no changes other than the addition of detection and
disinfection of new viruses.

Important information from previous Release Notes
           -------------------------------------------------

                      Version 3.13, September 1998

In the past, SWEEP for NetWare scanned uninfected Word and Excel
documents more slowly if disinfection was enabled. This has been
optimised to improve performance when disinfection is routinely turned
on.

If you have disinfection enabled, and have a large number of Word and
Excel files on your server, you will probably notice your scheduled
sweeps finishing earlier.

                       Version 3.12, August 1998

In this release, the file SWEEP.NLM is considerably smaller (about 1MB)
than it was last month (about 1.4MB). Nothing has been left out -- the
file has been internally compressed in order to allow us to continue to
fit it onto a single floppy diskette. No changes to the way you use or
configure the product are required. Decompression happens transparently
and automatically.

SWEEP for NetWare now also includes an NDS tree-browser for the
selection of notification groups. Previously, when selecting a group to
which SWEEP or InterCheck alerts should be delivered, a list of all
eligible groups would be presented. In a large or widely-distributed NDS
tree, building this list could take a considerable time. With the new
browser, which operates much like the browser in NETADMIN, groups are
retrieved as you browse through the tree, and retrieval of large or
remote group lists can be interrupted if desired.

Auto-updating is no longer inhibited if the new version (usually
SYS:/SWEEP/NLMINST/SWEEP.NLM) is flagged Delete Inhibit or Rename
Inhibit. These flags are automatically overridden by the auto-update
mechanism. However, Read Only, Delete Inhibit and Rename Inhibit flags
on the *old* version (usually in the SYSTEM directory) are honoured and
will prevent auto-updating from going ahead. The progress of an auto-
update (whether successful or not) is recorded in detail in the log
file.

                         Version 3.09, May 1998

This version includes a mechanism for automating updates. Previously,
after copying the new version of the SWEEP.NLM file to a server, it was
necessary to unload SWEEP and reload the new file in order to actuate
the new product and virus identities. Now, this unloading and reloading
can be handled automatically.

To configure this feature, select "Administration" from the main menu,
followed by "Auto-updating". This brings up the auto-updating
configuration menu.

"Status" is set to "Inactive" by default. To enable auto-updating,
switch this to "Active".

"Directory" configures the path in which SWEEP will check for the
arrival of an update of the SWEEP.NLM file. This is set by default to
SYS:/SWEEP/NLMINST, but can be reconfigured to select any path on any
volume.

NOTE: The auto-updating directory must be set to a directory other
than the one from which SWEEP was loaded (typically, SWEEP is
  installed and loaded from SYS:/SYSTEM).

NOTE: The auto-updating directory can only be set to a directory on
  the local server.

"Timing" determines when SWEEP checks for the arrival of an update. If
set to "On arrival", SWEEP will check every minute for an update and
initiate the auto-updating process as soon as it detects that an update
is available. If set to "Specified", SWEEP will only check for an update
and initiate the auto-updating process at the specified time.

NOTE: Sophos recommends that the "Specified" timing option is used and
that a suitable time chosen in order to ensure that auto-updating does
not occur while SWEEP is performing a scheduled or immediate job. If
such a job is in progress when the auto-updating process is initiated,
the job will be be terminated early.

To use auto-updating to update SWEEP on a server, simply copy the
updated SWEEP.NLM file into the designated auto-updating directory on
that server.

The auto-updating process involves verifying the integrity of the update
by reference to a built-in checksum. If the update is found to be
corrupted or invalid, it will be deleted from the auto-updating
directory and this will be recorded in SWEEP's log file.

NOTE: it is NOT possible to auto-update to a version of SWEEP.NLM
earlier than 3.09. Such versions do not contain the necessary auto-
updating checksum and will therefore be rejected by the update
  mechanism.

SWEEP's configuration will be preserved on auto-updating, provided that
the "update" is not an earlier version of SWEEP.

Command line qualifiers used with SWEEP will be preserved on
auto-updating.

The success (or otherwise) of the auto-updating process is permanently
recorded in the SWEEP.LOG file.
