SpaceCon V1.0
-------------

SpaceCon is a utility for Windows 98. It gives you control over the low
disk space facility integrated into Windows 98.

SpaceCon displays relevant information on all your fixed disk drives and
lets you modify the low disk space settings for them.

Installation
------------
SpaceCon is supplied as a compressed file archive. Copy the compressed
file to an empty floppy disk or new sub-directory on your hard disk and
extract the files.

Note: If you extract the files to a sub-directory you must use a short
path name that conforms to the MS-DOS 8.3 file naming convention - for
example, use C:\JDUtils. If you use a long file name the installation may
not work. See the FAQ on our web site for more details.

When you have uncompressed the supplied file, you should have the
following files in addition to the original:

SpaceCon.exe
SpaceCon.hlp
SpaceCon.cnt
SpaceCon.txt
SpaceCon.inf

Select the SpaceCon.inf Setup Information File in an Explorer window and
choose File, Install, or right click on the file and choose the Install
menu item. If you don't have an Install menu item, see the FAQ on our web
site.

Installation copies the files to the target location on your machine and
automatically runs SpaceCon.

How do you use SpaceCon?
------------------------
SpaceCon displays your disk drive information and suggests where you may
want to alter the setting. It also has a check box per disk drive that
allows you to disable the low disk notification for each disk drive. This
check box mirrors the facility in the Windows Disk Cleanup, Settings
dialog box.

1. To alter the threshold setting, select the drive and double click (or
use the Modify button).

2. Alter the notification level using the "Modify Notification Point"
dialog. Note that you can't enter a precise figure for the setting (the
underlying Windows 98 system calls only allows discrete settings). You
have to alter the setting using the spin control (which operates with the
mouse or the up/down cursor keys).

3. When you've altered the setting, press the OK button to commit the
setting for this current Windows session. If you've altered the setting so
that the low space setting is effective you should get the "Hard Disk is
Low on Space" dialog activated a few seconds later.

4. When you've set the required level for your disk drives you can press
the Save button to store these settings into the registry. This also
creates a Task Scheduler job to automate running of SpaceCon when your
machine starts up.

Note: Windows 98 always starts up with the low disk space notification at
preset levels. Therefore you need to have SpaceCon run automatically at
start-up so that it can use its saved settings.

If you don't use Task Scheduler you can run "SpaceCon /s" automatically at
startup using any of the existing methods - such as a shortcut in the
StartUp folder.

Limitations of the unregistered copy
------------------------------------
You can't save or restore the registry settings.

Problems with SpaceCon?
-----------------------
1. Installation is hard coded to a fixed location off the root of the
disk. While you can move the folder yourself, we don't recommend doing
this because the uninstallation information in the registry will be set to
the original location, so uninstallation will fail.

2. Uninstall doesn't remove the SpaceCon folder.

For up-to-date information, check the FAQ on our web site. If you can't
find an answer there, then please email us at jdd@csi.com with as complete
a description of your problem as possible. We'll try to respond within 24
hrs.

Registering
-----------
For information on registering your copy see our web pages.

When you receive your registration information, enter your registered name
and number into the application's About dialog box. You must enter the
information exactly as it appears. If you register the set of utilities,
be sure to use the correct registration number for each product.

Any updates to the current version are free to registered users by
downloading the latest version from our web site. Your current
registration number will continue to work with updates.

Removal
-------
Note: Because the Windows INF de-installer cannot currently delete files
that are in use, do not try to de-install if you're running SpaceCon.

Use the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs item. Select the SpaceCon item
(listed as "Space Control (Remove Only)") and click the Add/Remove button.
