How to get good Midi file

Outline

This section explains features of instrumental sound and how-to about the operation of the software to create a good midi file.

Features of instrumental sound

Usually, sound is a vibration of pressure of atmosphere. The vibration is the changing of pressure which occurs many times in a short period. The number of repetitions of vibration per second is frequency. The software gets the frequency of sound at the first step of the conversion. The other factor is power of frequency. So, there are two factors, frequency and power.

Frequency

Usually one tone of musical instrument has several frequencies. These frequencies have base frequency and harmonic tones(frequency is x2, x3, x4, .... times of base frequency). So, the software has a function which deletes harmonic tones. The function is given at harmonic tone's area.

Power

Base frequency doesn't always have maximum power. Power changes radically. Power at the start of a tone isn't the same as at the end of a tone. The power ratio between the base frequency and the harmonic frequency also isn't constant. The software deletes some frequencies which has power less than a threshold. The function 'Threshold' changes the threshold value.

Recommended operation procedure

1. Click the right mouse button on the harmonic tone's display area. Then all harmonic tones are shown on the Midi tone display area.

2. Set the threshold line to the top position. All tone signals are shown on the Midi tone display area.

3. You estimate a good level for the threshold line. Then, set the threshold line again.

4. Set the selected area. It's set by two operation in wav form area or selected area.

a. Left button click sets start time of the selected area.
b. Right button click sets end time of the selected area.

5. Change threshold or harmonic tone's existence as you like.

6. Repeat procedure 4. and 5. until you are satisfied.

7. Modify each tone on Midi tone displayed area. The operator can delete, add or change the start or end time of each tone by mouse operation.
