RAM / Swap Monitor Copyright (C) Moose O'Malley,
------------------ March 1998.

RAM / SWAP Monitor for Windows 95 / NT only.
This program will **NOT** run under Windows 3.x
(even with Win32 installed) !!

RAM / SWAP Monitor displays pie charts of the Physical
RAM and SWAPfile (Page file) usage in your PC,
and displays these details textually as well.

Developed using 32-bit Delphi.

Using this Program :
--------------------

To use this program, simply run it and observe the RAM usage
and SWAP file usage details change as you run it.

If you do not want to see the textual Free KB / Total KB
details for RAM and SWAP, then simply re-size the window to
hide these details.

The Spinning Line (between the RAM and Swap labels) spins
everytime the RAM / Swapfile usage details are updated.
i.e. it confirms that the program is still operating -
even when the graphs are stable.

This program will **NOT** run under Windows 3.x
(even with Win32 installed) !!

Why is this useful ? / Why do this ?
--------------------------------------

When RAM utilisation is high, then non-essential
chunks of code and data are automatically written
(by Windows) to a special file known as a Swapfile
or Page file, where they can be loaded again
(if and when needed) much faster than if the individual
chunks of code and data were searched for and loaded
again from their respective source files.

When RAM and/or Swap file utilisation is high,
system performance can suffer dramatically.
When this happens, it is be best to buy more
RAM and/or allocate more swap file space.

Also, if you find your temporary swap file is always
dramatically changing in size / usage, then it may
be best to allocate a permanent large swap file.
(This avoids lots of disk usage / disk thrashing
caused when the temporary swapfile is resized).

If your permanent Swapfile is too small for your needs,
then non-essential chunks of code / data are thrown
away completely instead of written to the swapfile,
and will mean that they will have to be searched for
and loaded again from their respective source files.
This is much slower than re-loading them from the
Swapfile.

If your permenent Swapfile is far larger than you need,
then you can shrink it down and recover the disk space
for other needs.

RAM / SWAP Monitor can help you monitor your PC's
RAM / Swapfile usage, so that upgrade / system
tuning decisions can then be made.

You may be surprised to see just how much RAM / Swap
Windows 95 uses up just in loading itself.

This program will **NOT** run under Windows 3.x
(even with Win32 installed) !!

N.B.	To alter Swapfile size and temporary / permanent
settings, go to the Control Pannel, double click
	on the System icon.
In Windows 95, choose the "Performance" tab,
and then select the "Virtual Memory" button,
you can now alter all Swapfile settings.

Limitations / Restrictions of the Shareware version :
-----------------------------------------------------

The Shareware version of this program has the following
limitations / restrictions :

- The program will not save its settings on Windows Shutdown,
but it will still save its settings when you manually exit /
close the program - just not when Windows terminates the program.
- A "Shareware" label is displayed in the Menu area of Text Buttons.
- Every now and then a "You have used this program xxx times,
Please Register" message will appear on program startup.

To remove all the limitaions of the shareware version,
please Register.

This program will **NOT** run under Windows 3.x
(even with Win32 installed) !!

The Future :
------------

In the future, many improvements could be made to this program,
such as :
- Display average RAM and SWAP usage.
- Store these average RAM and SWAP usage details for
use next time the program is run.
- Keep this program's Window on top, so that it can be seen
and monitored while other programs are being loaded / run.
- Display the number of Threads (windows processes) currently
  running.
- Display % of free system resources.
- Add in other graph types - like speedometer, bar, etc.
- Display whether the Swapfile is temporary or permanent.
- Possibly enable the navigation directly to Virtual Memory
(Swapfile) settings directly from this program - instead
of having to manually go via Control Pannel.
- Possibly do a 16-bit version of the program that will run
  under Windows 3.x.
- Anything else ?

If you would like any of these improvements, or would like to
suggest more, please email me and let me know.

How much more work I do on this program depends entirely on
what support I get, how many people use the program, how many
people have registered, etc.

None so far.

Sharware Information :
----------------------

This is NOT free software. This product is shareware.

But, it only costs $5 (FIVE) dollars to buy !

This means that you can try out the software for evaluation
purposes without charge for a period of 21 days to enable you
to decide whether to purchase / register it.

If you use this software after the 21 day evaluation period
a registration fee is required. See the Registration Form
in the file register.txt.

Unregistered use of this software after the 21-day evaluation
period is in violation of U.S. and international copyright laws.

If you do not purchase / register the software after the 21 day
trial period, then you must delete it from your system.

In order to encourage me to develop this software and keep
developing other software, I encourage you to do the right
thing and register the software.

I could have easily have made the programs nag you to Register,
or expire after 21 days of use, but I do not like this approach.

From April 97 on, however, some of the new functionality being
added to my programs will be available for Registered users only.
I tried to avoid doing this, but now I have been forced to do
this to try and encourage some Registrations.

I live in the hope that if people use the programs, then they
will register them.

Registered users will receive FREE upgrades of the program for
the life of the program. i.e. as long as I keep improving the
program, registered users will get this new / additional
functionality for FREE.

To Register, please complete the Registration Form in
the file register.txt.
