Getting Started

    Introduction
Polymorphic means having base attributes that remain the same and other attributes that are
extensible. The extensible attributes don't necessarily have to extend but they are intended
to. When they are extended the base type evolves. This process is called polymorphism.
The base type is said to be polymorphic.

The Polymorphic Database is thirty two bit software for Windows 95/98 and NT v.4/v.5. It
has the base attributes of a personal information management database. An address book,
interactive calendars including communications, appointments, things to do, notes and
personal diary. It also contains a secure system of login and passwords. It has extensible
attributes that permit you to design your access to the records in the database. That is why
it is called polymorphic. Access to the records in the database is user specified with a
"spoken English" system of verb / noun phrases. The end result is that you access database
records in a way that is meaningful to you and meets your unique needs. It is Microsoft
Access 97 compatible and registered users can use Access 97 to do things like import and
export records, compact and otherwise maintain the database.

    System Requirements
A minimum of an Intel 80486DX microprocessor based Laptop, notebook, IBM PC or true
IBM compatible computer. The Polymorphic Database is 32 bit software for Windows
95/98 and NT v.4/v.5. It will not install or run on UNIX systems, on a Macintosh or in the
Windows 3.1, Win32s environment.

You should have a minimum of sixteen megabytes of memory and thirty megabytes of free
disk space to complete installation. Additional disk space is used during installation to
decompress and copy the necessary files. After installation the program will occupy about
ten megabytes of disk space. Over time the database will increase in size as records are
added.

    Installation Instructions
The Polymorphic Database comes with a built in installation program "setup.exe". You are
encouraged to download but if you receive floppy disks you will find it on disk one.
Download all files into the same directory folder. Decompress any compressed (*.zip)
files and execute "setup.exe". Carefully enter information as directed by the setup program.
Before installing the Polymorphic Database close all other open, running and system tray
programs. Running other programs during installation is likely to cause general installation
problems or failure to occur.

Installation is a two part process. Part one is running "setup.exe" which decompresses the
archive and copies the files to your system. A directory folder is also created called
"Polymorphic Database". Part two begins when you run the Polymorphic Database for the
first time. Program registry entries are created, the data source is configured and the
various controls are registered. See the "Trouble Shooting" section for help solving
installation problems. The installation program will prompt you for a serial number. If
you have purchased the Polymorphic Database enter your license number. If you are a trial
user you may enter anything and must enter something. Your entry will be accepted.

If you have Windows 95 you will need to make sure you have the Microsoft 32 bit ODBC
subsystem installed. It is installed with Windows NT v.4/v.5 but it is an add on for
Windows 95. This system software is required to use the Polymorphic Database. To verify
that it is installed look in the Control Panel to find the 32 bit ODBC Administrator icon.
Open it and verify that the Microsoft Access ODBC system driver is present. The
Polymorphic Database uses the Microsoft Access ODBC system driver so you will also need
to make sure you have this system driver installed. If you do not have it installed you
will need to download and install the latest Microsoft Data Access Pack ("WX1350.EXE"
Microsoft ODBC drivers installation and setup self extracting archive for Windows 95)
from either wjohnson.com or microsoft.com. When offered the two drivers check boxes
the top check box is required and either check it alone or hit the "Select All" button
to install all available drivers. Once this subsystem is present the Polymorphic Database
will self configure. You should not have to do any system data source or any other ODBC
configuration.

When you run the Polymorphic Database a login window will present itself. Enter your login
and password and the first time be sure to write them down. You will need them each time
you run the program.

    How To Purchase

Visit the wjohnson.com Product Registration Center to place your order online. Registered
users will receive a custom version of the Polymorphic Database including the database
password. This will permit registered users having Microsoft Access 97 to open the database
and use all of the powerful features of Microsoft Access 97 to do things like import and
export records and compact and otherwise maintain the database. It is easy to do these
things with Microsoft Access 97 but you must be careful if you do make any changes. Changes
can produce undesireable results and we cannot take responsibility for or provide support
for your usage of Microsoft Access 97.

Database Information

ODBC - Open Data Base Connectivity
ODBC stands for Open Data Base Connectivity. ODBC is installed with Windows NT but
is an add on to Windows 95. ODBC application programming interfaces (APIs) give
programmers the ability to write applications that are independent of any particular
database management system (DBMS). ODBC provides an API that different database
vendors implement via ODBC drivers specific to a particular DBMS. ODBC is a major
part of the Microsoft Windows Open Standards Architecture (WOSA).

    ODBC Administrator
The 32 bit ODBC Administrator is usually found in the control panel. It registers and
configures the data sources available to you either locally or across a network.
The Polymorphic Database data source name is "WJAPDB." In most cases no
configuration beyond initial program installation is necessary. Occasionally it may be
necessary to move the large database file to a different location. It is easy to do this
but be careful if you do make any changes. Changes can produce undesireable results.

    Polymorphic Database Filters
A database needs to be filtered. This segregates the records and allows for the selection of
only a particular subset of the available records. Filtering of record sets is critical to the
performance of any DBMS. For example, you might want to select only the class sections
for a particular course, such as Math 101. A filter is a search condition and the search
condition constrains the selection of records from the database.

Multiple systems of user specified verb / noun phrase filters is what makes the
Polymorphic Database unique. An individual set of database filters in the form of verb /
noun phrases can be implemented for each individual dialog throughout. Each
polymorphic dialog screen or report uses its own set of unique user specified database
filters. You will create these sets of filters individually as you see fit according to your
needs. This segregates the records into groups that you define by assigning individual verbs
and nouns to individual records. Once assigned to a particular verb / noun phrase the
record will appear when the assigned verb / noun phrase is selected using the verb / noun
filters tool bar. The end result is that a group of records is selected in a way that is
meaningful to you.

The individual filters consist of verb / noun phrases. It's as easy and natural as spoken
English. You set up and use verb / noun phrases that conform to your specific needs. A few
default verb / noun database filters are already in place. They are: "Default", "N / A" and
"Internet". These are used internally throughout the program and cannot be altered.
"Default" is the default starting filter when no filter has been selected and "N / A" means
turn off filtering and select all records. Once you see how easy it is to work with the
polymorphic database filters you will find it comes natural to create your own meaningful
systems. You are only limited by your own imagination.

What's more is that individual records can be assigned to more than one unique verb / noun
phrase database filter at a time. This permits your C.P.A. friend Mary's record to appear
when you select the noun C.P.A., when you select the noun friend and and when you select
the noun business. It also similarly includes her record when reports are printed. You will
assign records to these filters individually as you see fit to meet your specific needs.

These phrases when used alone or in combination form effective database filters. Allowing
the user to segregate and address the records as she sees fit. Here are a few examples:
First Class + Veterinarian, New York + Courier Service, Unemployed + Relative, Member
+ Alcoholics Anonymous, International + Standards Organization, Real Estate + Lawyer
but mostly those that reflect your specific needs.

To show all verb phrases set the verb phrase to "N / A". To show all noun phrases set the
noun phrase to "N / A". To show all records set both the verb phrase and the noun phrase
to "N / A".

Program Usage

This section details the actual usage of the Polymorphic Database. The various screens,
menus, toolbars etc. and their usage.

    Security
A secure login and password are required to gain entry to the program. Passwords can be
updated and added so others can gain access. The database and your valuable data are
never accessible to outside programs or intruders.

Usage Of Verb / Noun Phrase Filters
The Polymorphic Database is based on the usage of dialog based systems of user created
verb / noun phrase filters to access database records. This presents new users with several
options:

1. Ignore database filtering. To ignore database filtering set and leave all verb / noun
combo boxes set to the "N / A" and "Default" entry. This instructs the Polymorphic
Database not to filter and to show all entries for verbs and use the "Default" for
nouns.

2. Choose to filter by noun only. leave all verb combo boxes set to the "N / A" entry.
The records will not be filtered by verb. Create and use noun filters exclusively.
This is what is done in practice most of the time.

3. Filter by verb and noun. When you've got large amounts of data or data that needs
differentiation and housekeeping you need to add verb filters. The records will be
filtered by verb and noun allowing an additional level of data separation.

If a record is present you can select "Polymorphic Filters" from the "Dialog" menu or click
the "N" (noun) or "V" (verb) book button on the filters tool bar. This will take you to the
filters dialog to manipulate filters for the current record. The name of the current record
is displayed in the title area. The left list box contains the current set of either verb or noun
phrases. The top tab changes between verbs and nouns. The right list box contains the verb
or noun phrases that have been assigned to the current record. Use the "New", "Rename"
and "Delete" buttons to manage the left list box. Use the "Give" and "Take" buttons to
manage the assignment of filters to the current record. Press "Done" to go back to the
previous dialog.

As you build the verb and noun phrases you will notice that they correspond with the
listings in the filters tool bar. You will see this when you return to the previous dialog.
Once your phrase is available you set it before entering a new record and the new record is
assigned to it. When getting started the lists are all empty. We recommend starting in the
Address Book, entering a new record and a few basic filters to get familiar with the
program. Go into the Filters dialog and use the "New" button several times to enter a few
basic noun phrase filters like "Police", "Fire" and "Ambulance." Press "Done" and you
will be returned to the Address Book. Notice the filters tool bar with verbs on the left and
nouns on the right now contains your new entries. Select "Police" and make a new entry for
the local police department. Change the selection back to "default" and you will no longer
see your new "Police" record. Select "Police" to retrieve it again.

    Adding New Records
Adding records in any of the Calendar dialogs or screens is initiated by pressing the day
of the month button on the calendar. The entry screen will then be displayed. After entering
in the new information press the update (star) button to save it. Adding records in the
Address Book is initiated by pressing the plus button or by selecting "Add Record" from
the File menu. After you have entered in the new information for the record complete the
addition or update operation in one of three ways.

Move off the current record and onto another record.
Press the update (star) button or choose the menu selection "Update Record."
If you are adding a new record you may press the "plus" button or select "Add
Record" from the menu. The current record will be added and you can proceed to
	enter another new record.

    Editing Existing Records
You may make changes to the individual records as you browse through them. You must
move off the record and onto the next record to save the changes made. If only one record
is present you will not be able to move off the record to update it. In this case press the star
/ update button to save the changes made. The edit / update operation is not automatic. In
most cases you need to execute this operation to save your changes.

    Searching And Finding Existing Records
Clicking on the "flashlight" button, pressing ctrl+F or selecting "Find" from the "Edit" menu
will bring up the search current record set dialog box. Select case sensitivity and search
direction for the current record set. No "wildcard" characters such as '*' should be used.
Enter all or a portion of the text you are looking for and press the "Find Next" button. You
may continue to press the "Find Next" button until you have found the record you are
looking for or all the records have been searched. If you find the record you are looking for
press the "Cancel" button to remain on the record. If you do not find the record and all the
records have been searched you will be returned to the current record at the time the search
was initiated. When in the Address Book the search fields are Name, Title, Company,
Address and City. When in a Calendar dialog the memo and title fields are searched.

    Performing Database Backups
Performing database backups is necessary to protect your valuable data. In general a
complete system backup should be performed on a regular basis. You may also want to
create and use a system of incremental backup for the Polymorphic Database. The entire
database is contained in a single main file: wjapdb.mdb. Copy this file to a backup
location on an incremental basis to protect against day to day problems such as design or
data entry errors. To restore your backup first close the Polymorphic Database then
overwrite the wjapdb.mdb file in the program directory folder with your saved backup.
Use caution in doing this as you will lose all data entered after the backup was created.
Your backup serves as a time capsule that you can go back to in case you run into
problems.

Dialogs / Screens

    Data Center
The Data Center is your starting point and the center of the Polymorphic Database. This
area provides logical access to the main dialogs.

    Polymorphic Filters
Define and manage your individual systems of polymorphic record segregation and retrieval
by clicking on a verb "V" or noun "N" button. Assign multiple filters to individual database
records. Design a system for each particular dialog (e.g. Address Book) that will organize
the individual database records your way, tailor the way individual records are retrieved
from the database and customize printed or exported reports.

Each polymorphic dialog gets it's own set of verb / noun phrase filters that you design
yourself to meet your needs. This segregates the records into groups that you define by
assigning individual verbs and nouns to individual records. Once assigned to a particular
verb / noun phrase the record will appear when the assigned verb / noun phrase is selected
using the verb / noun filters tool bar. The end result is that a group of records is selected
in a way that is meaningful to you. See the "Polymorphic Database Filters" section
above for more information.

Trouble Shooting

    Installation
See the above section on "Getting Started" and make sure your system meets the minimum
requirements. If you are new to computers please ask someone you know for assistance.
Before installing close all other open, running and system tray programs. Running other
programs during installation is likely to cause general installation problems or failure to
occur.

    Known Problems

1. Limitations:
Calendar dates are only valid between the years 1970 and 2037 inclusive.
Memo or note fields are limited to 65535 characters. This is approximately
16 pages of text. If you attempt to paste a large amount of text that exceeds
65535 characters nothing will be pasted.

2. If the installation program returns error -115 it is likely that one of the following
	has occurred:

You have other programs running that are interfering with the installation.
You have attempted to install to a 16 bit operating system.
You have attempted to install to a root directory folder.
You have run out of space on either the source or destination drive. In most
	cases the "C" drive.

    System Compatibility
The Polymorphic Database will not install or run on UNIX systems, on a Macintosh or in
the Windows 3.1, Win32s environment.

    Database Problems

General ODBC subsystem problems that can cause the Polymorphic Database to fail or
produce error messages after successful installation can often be solved in this manner:

1. Uninstall the Polymorphic Database
2. Install: ODBC Drivers For Windows 95 and Windows NT - execute "dataacc.exe"
or download "WX1350.EXE" Microsoft ODBC drivers installation and setup self
extracting archive for Windows 95 and Windows NT into a directory folder on
your machine. The "dataacc.exe" file is distributed in the Polymorphic Database
archive so if you have the Polymorphic Database chances are you already have this file.
3. Reinstall the Polymorphic Database
