Voxware's VoxPhone
Version 3.0

What is VoxPhone?
----------------
VoxPhone is an Internet telephony application that allows you to
have live conversations over the Internet. If a user is unavailable,
VoxPhone allows you to record and send voice mail via Internet email.

You can speak with other VoxPhone users anywhere in the world. You can also
speak with users who use H.323-compliant Internet phones, such as Netscape
Conference and Microsoft NetMeeting. (H.323 is an industry standard for
Internet phone interoperability.)

2. UPGRADING TO VOXPHONE 3.0
============================

The VoxPhone 3.0 installation program does not transfer any local address
book information from any previous versions of VoxPhone (including versions
with a different product name). However, if you want to reuse information
saved in your former local address book, you can manually transfer that
information to VoxPhone 3.0. Your former local address book information
is contained in files with a .TDC filename extension.

Note: The local address book is a VoxPhone Pro feature.

Steps to Transfer Local Address Book Information
------------------------------------------------
1. Start the Windows 95 Explorer program (Start --> Programs --> Windows Explorer).
2. Go to the directory on your PC that contains a previous version of VoxPhone.
3. Highlight all TDC file types.
   Hint: To view all TDC files together, select View --> Arrange Icons --> by Type.
4. Select Edit --> Copy.
5. Go to the directory on your PC that contains VoxPhone 3.0. For example,
   C: --> Program Files --> VoxPhone 3.0 --> Address Book.
6. Select Edit --> Paste. Information from your former local address book is now
   available in your VoxPhone 3.0 local address book.

   Note: VoxPhone 3.0 stores all local address book information in *.TVX files,
          not *.TDC files. The next time you access the Local Address Book tab on
          the VoxPhone Call window, VoxPhone automatically converts your *.TDC
          files to *.TVX files. VoxPhone also creates backup copies (*.OLD).

3. STARTING VOXPHONE
====================

You must be connected to the Internet before starting VoxPhone.

1. Establish your connection to the Internet.
2. Click on the Start button in the taskbar; then select
   Programs --> VoxPhone 3.0 --> VoxPhone 3.0.
3. The first time you run VoxPhone, the Setup Wizard starts
   automatically to help you verify essential system components,
   adjust initial settings, and enter VoxPhone user information.

4. PLACING YOUR FIRST CALL
==========================

1. Establish your connection to the Internet and start VoxPhone.
2. On the main VoxPhone window, click on Call.
3. In the Online Users List tab on the Call window, double-click on the
   name of the person you want to call.
   Note: The person must be using VoxPhone and have their name published
         in the online users directory for you to see their name.
4. After the person accepts your call, you can begin your conversation.
5. When you are finished talking, click on Hang Up.

5. WEB-BASED CALLS
==================

As a VoxPhone user, you can place calls from Web pages to other VoxPhone
users or other H.323-compliant Internet phone users. Four11 Corporation hosts
the Web-based phone directories where VoxPhone users are published. Associated
with each user's name is a link that you can click to place a Web-based call.

You can also create a link on your own Web page that launches VoxPhone and
calls a specific user. You use standard HTML code to make the link. Your
Web browser must be set up to recognize the VoxPhone MIME type.

HTML Code
---------
The following is the syntax used to make the Web page link:

<A HREF="path/filename.tvx">Link text to click</A>

In the statement, path is the location on the server where the file resides
and filename.tvx is the name of the file. For example, the following is an
example of HTML code that can launch VoxPhone and call the user identified
in the john.tvx file. The user of the Web page only needs to click on the
link "Call your brother John."

<A HREF="john.tvx">Call your brother John.</A>

TVX File
--------
A .TVX file is a plain ASCII text file that contains the user profile of the
user to call and the Internet phone application to use. A user profile includes
the users email address, IP address, first name, and last name. For VoxPhone
users, the application to use to make the call should be VoxPhone. The following
is an example of the contents of a .TVX file:

[User]
IP=123.4.132.224
Email=johnw@greatcompany.com
FirstName=John
LastName=Wilson
AppCalling=VoxPhone

MIME Type
---------
The VoxPhone install program automatically registers VoxPhone as a MIME type
for Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. This means that in the list of
helper applications for your Web browser, the following line should appear:

application/x-voxphone

The file extension is .TVX for the VoxPhone MIME type.

6. KNOWN ISSUES
===============

- If you did not uninstall a beta version of VoxPhone 3.0 before you installed
  the released version, you may experience a problem playing VOX files using the
  ToolVox Player. You should first delete the ToolVox Player files that came with
  the beta version of VoxPhone from the VoxPhone 3.0 directory. The filenames are
  NP32VOX.DLL and WP32VOX.EXE. You should then download a free copy of the ToolVox
  Player from Voxware's Web site at http://www.voxware.com and install it.

- You may experience problems when using VoxPhone with combination
  modem/sound card boards such as IBM's MWAVE board. We recommend
  using these cards as either a sound card or a modem, but not both,
  when using VoxPhone.

- If, when starting VoxPhone, you receive a message that begins
  "Could not initialize VoxPhone...," check the following items:

  - Ensure you are connected to the Internet prior to starting VoxPhone.
  - Ensure you do not have a problem with your Internet connection,
    i.e., make sure that you can perform other Internet tasks.
  - Ensure you are not behind a firewall.
  - Ensure you are using a 32-bit dialer. If you are unsure, please
    contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

- If your Internet connection is through America Online (AOL), you
  cannot send outgoing mail from VoxPhone. This is because AOL
  does not use an SMTP mail server, which is required by VoxPhone
  for outgoing mail. The impact is that you cannot send voice mail
  or automatically register with Four11's Web-based White Page
  Directory from VoxPhone. However, you can receive voice mail from
  other VoxPhone users that is delivered to your AOL email address.
  Also, if you want to register with Four11's White Page Directory,
  you can use your Web browser to go directly to Four11's Web site at
  http://www.four11.com.

- If you are using Text Chat in a session with another VoxPhone user and
  then switch to a session with an H.323 user, Text Chat does not work.
  Text Chat is only available in VoxPhone to VoxPhone sessions.

- If you uninstall VoxPhone, you may need to delete some remaining
  files in the directory where VoxPhone was installed. The uninstall
  program may not delete files which VoxPhone automatically creates
  after it is installed. Examples of these files are: blocking.bin,
  config.bin, event.bak, event.log, groups.bin, VoxPhone.gid, and
  users.bin.

- The VoxPhone installation program does not set up certain H.323-compliant
  codecs (e.g., G.711 u-law and G.711 A-law) for you. To make these codecs
  available, you must add them through your Windows Setup. Follow the
  instructions below to make the codecs available to VoxPhone.

  Steps to Install H.323-Compliant Codecs
  ---------------------------------------
  1. From the Windows 95 Start menu, select Settings --> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. On the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click on the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Under the Windows Setup Components list, highlight Multimedia and then
     click on the Details button.
  5. Under the Multimedia Components list, click on the Audio Compression checkbox.
  6. Press OK twice for Windows to copy the files you need.
     Note: If the files are not on your system, you may need to install them from
     your Windows 95 Installation disks.
  7. When Windows finishes copying the files, close the Control Panel.

     The next time you start VoxPhone, the H.323-compliant codecs are available.
     To check for the codecs in VoxPhone, select Tools --> Options. Go to the
     Audio tab and press the Advanced button. The codec names are displayed on the
     Advanced Compression Properties window.
