What is ScreenChanger 98?
-------------------------
ScreenChanger 98 is a simple way of changing the startup, "wait to shutdown" and "safe to shutdown" screens. No longer do you need to fiddle around with Windows Explorer (or even worse, the DOS prompt) to change the attributes for the screens. It's now as simple as point and click!

How do I use ScreenChanger?
---------------------------
Once you have installed ScreenChanger, go to the Start Menu and select "ScreenChanger 98". If this is the first time you have used ScreenChanger since installing it, a couple of dialog boxes will appear asking you to add the first "screen theme" name and the directory where those screens are stored. It's a good idea to place all you screens in separate folders under "C:\Start Screens" (or wherever you choose to place your start screens). That way, you don't have to look all over the hard drive for where you placed them when you put them on your hard drive.

Once you have entered the first theme, the main screen will come up. This contains a list box which shows all the themes, as well as buttons to change to the selected set of screens, add a new theme, delete a current theme, and to exit the program.

* To change to a set of screens:
Select that theme set in the list box. Next to the list box will appear some details about the theme (what the name is and where the screens are stored). When you've done this, go to the Themes menu and select "Change Screens", or press Ctrl-C. You will be asked whether you really want to change the screens - if you choose Yes they will be changed.

* To add a theme:
Go to the Themes menu and select "New Theme", or press Ctrl-N. A dialog box will come up asking for the name of the theme and where the screens for that theme are stored. When you're ready to add the theme, click on the "Add the theme" button or press Alt-A.

* To delete a theme:
Select the theme you want to delete, then go the the Themes menu and click on "Delete Theme", or press Ctrl-D. You will then be asked whether you really want to delete the theme - if you choose Yes it will be deleted from the list of themes BUT you will have to delete the screens yourself (this is so you can put it back on the list later.

* To edit a theme:
Go to the Themes menu and select "Edit Theme", or press Ctrl-E. A dialog box will appear with a list of all the themes. Just select a theme and you can change the following settings:
	- the theme's name;
	- the directory where the themes are stored; and
	- the startup or shutdown screens for the theme.
When you're done, click on the Exit button or press Alt-X.

* To exit ScreenChanger:
Just go to the Themes menu and select "Exit", or press Ctrl-X.

Is ScreenChanger free?
----------------------
ScreenChanger is a shareware program. That means that if you like the program and want to keep using it, then you pay the programmer a small fee. That way, the programmer is rewarded for his/her efforts and is encouraged to keep developing programs for the public. If nobody pays, then the programmer will simply stop writing new programs or new versions of current programs and the public loses out on software which benefits them greatly.

To get around this, some people place time limits on their software or limit other functions in the program - this is called "crippleware". I personally do not believe in crippleware as there are sometimes legitimate reasons why they cannot register it in the time limit allowed. As well as this, if you uninstall a piece of crippleware and then reinstall it later on, the time limit on it has usually expired.

If you like ScreenChanger and you want to keep using it, send a cheque for US$10 to:

Please include the following details:
* Name
* Address (including country)
* Home phone number
* E-mail address - this is so I can give you an registration unlock code.

By purchasing a registered version, you get rid of the annoying startup screen, as well as receiving free e-mail support and upgrades (including from previous versions of Windows Start Screen Changer). So $10 is a very small amount to pay for something that will make some people's lives a whole lot easier.

By the way: If you own a registered copy of ScreenChanger, please don't give it (and the unlock code) to anybody else. This deprives the programmer of income that they would otherwise get if people paid for their software. Encourage others to register instead of pirating the program - that way they will ensure that quality software will continue to be written.
