An integral part of the German plans to invade Belgium was to use the parachute arm of the Luftwaffe. While a handful of paratroopers from the 7th Flieger Division landed, and overcame the Belgian fort of Eben Emael using beehive charges, a larger force from the Assault Regiment was landed along the Albert Canal north of the main fortification to seize the Meuse (Maas) bridge. The capture of this most important structure guaranteed that the Meuse(Maas) River would be crossed according to plan by the 16 Panzer Corps (Hopner), and thus established the necessary conditions for the coordination of ground and air operations in Holland. The dawn missions , as history recorded, went succeeded surprisingly well.
