DNIEPER BRIDGEHEAD*
*
Soviet break-out accross the Dnieper*
*
Date: 24th September 1943*
*
Operation Citadel (the German armoured assault on the Kursk Salient) has failed. The Red Army has counterattacked on a massive scale, throwing Army Group South back to the Dnieper. The Soviets are able to cross at sites of their choosing. German Kampfgruppen must act as "Fire Brigades" to seal off and destroy each bridgehead before a break-out is achieved.*
*
On 20th September the 6th Guards Tank Corps under General Rybalko reached the Dnieper River. On the 21st, under cover of darkness, motorised infantry elements cross the river on rafts and dig in in the town of Zarubentsy waiting for the armoured columns to arrive.*
*
The Armored Reconnaissance Battalion 19 of the 19th Panzer Division was dispatched on 22nd September to seal of the crossing point until stronger forces could be brought to bear.*
*
On the afternoon of the 24th, Red Army engineers completed pontoon bridges accross the river, enabling the tanks to cross. Three Kampfgruppen are racing to join the Recon. Battalion. As they do so, the sound of Soviet transport planes becomes deafening and they soon see parachutes billowing accross the sky.*
