What is PC Inspector?
---------------------
The Fluke PC Inspector Network Assistant application is a
network support tool that can be used to quickly and easily
check a Windows 95 or Windows NT workstation for proper
configuration and operation on a network. When end-users of
workstations are having problems with network communications,
you can use the PC Inspector application to quickly determine
whether the problems are being caused by application
faults or by PC configuration errors.

How Can You Use PC Inspector?
-----------------------------
There are four main tasks you can perform with the PC Inspector
application:

 * Perform connectivity tests: The application's easy-to-use
                               interface lets you perform ping
tests over the network so that
                               you can test network-layer
                               connectivity to specific machines.
                               You can perform server/node ping
tests for Novell, Microsoft, and IP
                               servers.

 * Check a PC's configuration: Instead of searching for
                               configuration information in lots
of separate places, you can get
                               configuration information in
                               one place: the PC Inspector
                               Display Area. You can check
                               the configuration of key
                               Windows networking parameters,
such as the type of network adapter
and client software installed in a PC.
You can also check other configuration
parameters, such as what printers are
                               installed.

 * Change a PC's configuration: The PC Inspector application
provides direct access to the areas
                                where you can modify configuration
                                settings, saving you time. For
                                example, if you determine that
                                additional client software is
                                needed, with one click, you
can open the Windows Network window
                                from within the PC Inspector
                                application.

 *  Document a PC's configuration: You can print a PC's configuration
                                   information and the results of
                                   connectivity tests.

Why Should You Use PC Inspector?
--------------------------------
"Moves," "adds," and "changes" are routinely performed by network
technicians and PC support personnel. These tasks require that two
things be done:

 * A fully-functional network drop must be provided.
 * A PC must be configured to operate properly on that network
         connection.

The Fluke OneTouch(TM) Network Assistant makes it easy to
check network connections and track down problems, but
how can you check a PC's configuration?

There are a variety of software tools, which are part of
network operating systems, that can be used to check PC
configurations, but these tools require that a number of
different things be checked independently. For example,
on a PC running Windows 95, to check the number of disk
drives and the amount of space available on each drive,
you could use Windows Explorer. Then, to check for
information about the hardware, available printers, and
available network resources, you could check
various places under the Windows Control Panel.

Wouldn't it be nice to get all this information in one place,
and also to have a quick, easy way of changing a PC's
configuration and testing whether the PC can successfully
connect to various machines on the network? That's what the
PC Inspector application provides: one software
tool, which can be carried around from PC to PC on a
floppy disk, and which lets you check, change, and
document the configuration parameters of PCs running
Windows 95 or Windows NT version 4.0. Using the PC
Inspector application after you move, change, or install
networked PCs can prevent time-consuming "call-backs,"
since you can verify connectivity in seconds.

In addition, you can install the PC Inspector application
on PCs whose configurations have been checked, and then,
when end-users call to report a problem, for example trouble
connecting to a network device, you can ask them to run the
ping connectivity tests. Without even leaving your office,
you'll be able to get information about the possible nature
of the problem.

What Information Does PC Inspector Provide?
-------------------------------------------
The PC Inspector application provides the following
information about the PC you are testing:

 * Hardware information, for example, the version
and date of the PC's BIOS ROM and the type of
      CPU chip.

 * Operating system information, for example, the name
and version of the operating system.

 * Printer information, for example, the path to a network
      printer.

 * Network information, for example, the type of network
      adapter installed in the PC.

 * Disk information, for example, the amount of free
      space on each disk drive.

 * Connectivity information, for example, whether a
      specific server is available.

Refer to the application's online help for more information
about how to use the application and what kind of information
the application can give you. The online help also contains
extensive network troubleshooting information.

PC Inspector System Requirements
--------------------------------
The PC Inspector application can be run on PCs that are
running the Windows 95 operating system or the Windows
NT version 4.0 operating system.

Using PC Inspector
------------------
You can check a PC's configuration and operation by
running the PC Inspector application from the floppy disk.

Note: There is no need to install the application on each
PC you check. However, if you wish, you can install
the application on a PC by copying all the files on the
PC Inspector floppy disk to the PC's hard disk.

1. Insert the PC Inspector floppy disk into the floppy drive
of the PC whose configuration you want to check.

2. Click the Start button and then click Run.

3. Type a:\inspect into the Command Line field, and then
    click OK.

4. Click the various buttons on the PC Inspector display
to get information about the PC you are testing. For
example, click the Printers button to get information
about the printers available to the PC you are testing.

Accessing PC Inspector Online Help
----------------------------------
The PC Inspector application comes with two kinds of
online help:

 * Topic-oriented help, which includes procedures and
descriptive help topics as well as extensive
      network troubleshooting information

 *  Field-level context-sensitive help (also known as "What's
This" help), which describes each control (for example,
buttons and fields) in the application and gives pertinent
information about how you can use the control

To access the topic-oriented help, press the F1 key, or click the
button that has only a question mark on it. You can then select a
topic from the Contents tab (which displays the Table of
Contents) or the Index tab, or you can perform a full-text
search for a particular word or phrase from the Find tab.

To access context-sensitive (What's This) help, do either of the
following:

 * Place the mouse cursor over the control for which you want
help, click the right mouse button, and then click the
      What's This button that appears.

 * Click the button that has an arrow and a question mark on it,
and then click the control for which you want help.
